Things you miss, The reminiscent thread (Chapter one)

I miss living within 15-30 minutes of practically anywhere I really wanted to go or anything I wanted to do.

I miss having a Starbucks within 10 minutes of my home.

I miss living a few blocks from the off-ramp of a freeway that could lead me into the largest city in the state.

You know what, I'm just gonna say it. I miss 90s, early 2000s cartoons. New cartoons are getting better but I still miss the style that nineties cartoons had.

Subsequently, I miss cell-shading in animated tv shows. I know computer art is easier but I've always felt cell-shading was better.
Cell shading is computer art.

I really couldn't stand those 90s cartoons. Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, etc. I thought the art was pretty bad. All the faces in Spider-Man looked roughly the same, and there were like 3 frames per second. Sure, they were shaded, but so were 80s cartoons whenever it was relevant to the story (bright lights, for example).

THANK YOU. I always wondered why people thought those cartoons looked good. I always thought they looked pretty terrible.

I always thought the 80s GI Joe/Transformers/Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends had much cleaner character drawings and were animated way better.

Well...YEAH! I was talkin' stuff like Animaniacs, Hysteria, Rocko's modern life, that stuff. But I disagree ALMOST completely with Spider Man and His Amazing friends. Mostly for the numerous scenes where I saw Spider-man web-slinging....where there were no buildings to web-sling on. Like he was holding onto a magical flying string.

And while were at it:
Cell shading is computer art.
Sorry, I stated the wrong term. I meant back-ground shading, when the back-grounds would look FREAKING BEAUTIFUL! Like paintings! Or is that just called Background art? Either way I feel it ain't as good as it used to be.

You mean cell animation. Cell shading is the process of making 3D computer rendered models look like they're traditional cell animation.

Right, thank you. I am just TERRIBLE with terms sometimes.

Okay, something non cartoon that I miss....OH! The ignorant belief that the government is there to help you and that everything is okay. Basically childhood again but still.

Actually, I think you mean "cel" animation. Otherwise you're talking about this:

(Yes, that was the best I could find)

I miss being a kid at my mother's family Christmas parties. Kids always got the best presents during those things. Now I get gift-cards to places that aren't near my neighbourhood OR a thoughtless sweater. I have enough sweaters.

I miss:
  • being free from pain. It's been so long I've forgotten what it feels like.
  • having friends I see on a regular basis.
  • being able to eat grains.
  • being active
  • not caring about all the stuff I can't do

I miss wading in the surf, catching tadpoles, climbing trees, playing hopscotch, and just generally being a kid.
Fortunately, I'm almost to the age where I can go senile and reenact my childhood all over again.

Senior year of high school. The first 3 years ranged from shitty to meh, but senior year was just so much fun. Got into college early enough that I didn't have to worry about it, mostly took fun classes and spent about half of any given day just goofing off with my friends.

Man, I hated senior year. In SC they have this state-sponsored gifted and talented program that takes place over the summer between junior and senior year in which you basically go to college. It was like giving a kid crack, and then saying, "Nope, no more for a year". Senior year just felt like biding time.

Ditto. Senior year...DAMN! I don't think I did ANY serious work during that year. Also that was when we were allowed to eat in the Culinary academy's restaurant. Mmmmmmmmmm. I also miss my school's cooking.

I miss a lot of my high school friends. I only got to hang out with them at school because most of them lived like 2 hours away from me. I see a few of them at my community college sometimes, but it's not the same.

I miss free time. Being able to watch a movie all the way through or get to the end of a video game would be super. I'm seriously considering taking a year between graduation and grad school.

*One thing I miss about being a child is having an excuse to not talk to anyone. You were just shy or playing or you just plain didn't understand what the grown-ups were going on about. I don't like being at a gathering and feeling rude because I'm not comfortable talking to people.

*I miss enjoying a soda. I remember how satisfying an occasional soft drink was in the hot summer months, and now I can't get past 2 sips unless it's a Mexican Coke.

*I miss my baby brother. I'm so proud of him making his way as a musician in New Orleans, but it's so weird not having my pal around.

*I miss feeling sure of myself. I was the "leader" of my group in high school--their words, not mine. I organized get-togethers, talked people through their problems, and pretty much kept the peace. Now I'm no one's glue, but I sure would like to be again someday.

I miss being able to tell any random or not random person to fuck off and not be worried about the consequences because I didn't hold a position that could be compromised if I did.

I miss Asheron's Call in its heyday. Darktide was an experience I won't soon forget. You could write a novel about the stuff that happened on that server.

Blood, GEN, the anti-PK alliances. Alberon Mindeater and forth Tethna. The retaking of AB. Disguising your high level self in newbie clothes to ferret out the low level PK gangs. Running around with a lugian hammer for the hell of it. "Death items", looting the corpses of your enemies again and again until they had nothing but their undroppable GSA armor and wet tears.
