Who was the best TV father of all time?

Fathers day is coming up, and since art imitates life (or is it the other way around?) I thought this would be an interesting question.

Who's your pick, and why?

(maybe this should be in the media section, I dunno)

Mr. Cunningham. His kids could have come out of the closet with black boyfriends and he would have understood. Which, considering the show took place in the 50s is saying a lot.


Otherwise Col. Potter for being tough but fair.

Kurt's dad from Glee. Here's a guy who has a son that he just plain doesn't understand. He's kind of a redneck, he's a mechanic, and he's the type of person you'd expect to be right-wing and homophobic. But when his son turns out to be gay - and not just gay but gloriously, fabulously and flamboyantly gay (i.e. television stereotypical gay) - he is man enough to examine his beliefs and becomes a strong advocate for his son, doing everything he can to protect him from the bullying and trials many gay students encounter.

Those other TV dads were understanding and everything, but when it comes to kids before yourself it's hard to argue against Kurt's dad.

(And if you still think Mr. C is a good dad, ask him what happened to Chuck.)

I would agree with this if it weren't for the favoritism and blind eye he turned toward Laurie. I mean, I can see merit in how he treated Eric as Eric needed a firm hand, but Laurie was a total bitch slut and Red never wavered in his belief that she was perfect.

A bit antiquated, and stern, but shit does he love his kids, and how he acts is very real and very caring. He just doesn't want Lindsey to be like Jimi Hendrix. You know what happened to him? HE DIED.

I mean, a bit unfair that he's from a book series as well... but he raised his children right.

Hell, he saves his bastard son from a terrible life by bringing him home regardless of how it would tarnish his honorable image.

The Dad from Glee was a pretty good one Dave, I forgot about that.

To be honest I assumed you were going to go with What's His Name from Red Dwarf, since he was his own father, and that makes fathers day more fun (or would it make it more confusing?)

Speculation and potential major spoilers (if I'm right):
Pretty sure that Jon Snow is actually the bastard son of Ned Stark's sister and Rheagar Targaryean. Still unknown in the books, but I think it's hard to read them and not come away with this theory.

Oh sure he messed up a lot. Nearly drove Fran insane. But as much as he hated her mother, he couldn't bring himself to throw her into the tar pit on Hurling Day, could he?
And he certainly never understood Robbie, but he ultimately accepted Robbie's herbivore lifestyle, and was always encouraging of him, even when his refusal to sell the energy dome to Mr. Richfield means passing on a small fortune and hurting his position in the WeSaySo Corporation. Why, he even disguised himself as a USO girl just so he could sneak into the front lines and drag Robbie out of the Pistachio war safely.

A bit stuck in the old ways, perhaps, but at the end of it all, he was open minded enough to learn from his children, as well as teach them.

I was just going to post Uncle Phil. He's a great dad. That ep when Will's dad shows up makes me tear up every time.

I'd actually put Hal pretty high up there on the list. He loves his kids and does whatever he can for them.

Speaking of which.

Dan Conner.

He had his human failings but was always a good father to 3 very ungrateful children.
