Minor victory thread

My Neice is home from the hospital today. The only reason this is a minor victory and not an Epic Win is because her premature birth combined with my nephew's already exitsting health problems and recent shunt malfunction put my step brother into a state of anxiety/ depression bad enough he's barely able to leave the house, so he's not working. And my sister's on maternity leave, so their financial situation has gotten so bad all four of them now have to move back into my parents' tiny two bedroom house. I really hope my family's luck turns around soon.

But, YAY My neice is out of the hospital. My nephew must be so happy. He was already crazy excited about being a big brother, but now that she's home and he doesn't have to go the hospital to see her he must be really happy.

Thanks Ceej.
I'd post pictures, but it's my sisters kids, y'know. I'll wait until she puts up photos on www.littledexter.com before sharing them. My niece looks like a very healthy little baby girl. And she looks a LOT like Dexter when he was first discharged. She was less than 2 and half pounds when she was born (I can't remember the exact weight), but she's home now and over 7lbs. Unlike with Dexter, she didn't have any brain hemorraging or anything like that as a result of her premature birth. Her time in the hospital was all just waiting for her digestive tract to develop enough to handle feeding properly without causing reflux or breathing problems. She will need some physiotherapy, I think, just because for the first few years her body is still going to be under developed, but her complications are nothing compared to Dexter's.

Been bitching about this one writer's "rules" on Twitter, pointing out how some of my favorites regularly violate those rules.

Neil Gaiman replied to one and he had my back :D.

Wet Dreams
by Kip Addotta

Lyrics:

It was April the forty-first
Being a quadruple leap year
I was driving in downtown Atlantis
My barracuda was in the shop
So I was in a rented stingray
And it was overheating

So I pulled into a Shell Station
They said I'd blown a seal
I said, "Fix the damn thing
And leave my private life out of it
Okay pal?"

While they were doing that
I walked over to a place called the Oyster Bar, a real dive
But I knew the owner
He used to play for the Dolphins
I said "Hi Gil"
You have to yell, he's hard of herring

Think I had a wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Wet dream

Gil was also down on his luck
Fact is he was barely keeping his head below water
I bellied up to the sandbar
He poured me the usual

Rusty snail, hold the grunion
Shaken not stirred
With a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich on the side
Heavy on the mako

I slipped him a fin
On porpoise
I was feeling good
I even dropped a sand dollar in the box for Jerry's squids
For the halibut

Well the place was crowded
We were packed in like sardines They were all there to listen to the big band sounds of Tommy Dorsal
What sole

Tommy was rockin' the place with a very popular tuna
Salmon Chanted Evening
And the stage was surrounded by screaming groupers
Probably there to see the bass player

One of them was this cute little yellowtail
And she's giving me the eye
So I figured this is my chance for a little fun
You know, piece of Pisces

But she said things I just couldn't fathom
She was too deep, seemed to be under a lot of pressure
Boy, could she drink
She drank like a . . .
She drank a lot

I said "What's your sign"
She said "Aquarium"
I said "Great, let's get tanked"

Think I had a wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Wet dream

I invited her to my place for a midnight bait
I said "Come on baby, it'll only take a few minnows"
She threw me that same old line
"Not tonight, I gotta haddock"

And she wasn't kidding either
Cause in came the biggest, meanest looking haddock
I'd ever seen come down the pike
He was covered with mussels

He came over to me and said
"Listen, shrimp, don't you come trollin' around here"
What a crab
This guy was steamed
I could see the anchor in his eyes

I turned to him, I said
"A-balone, you're just being shellfish"
Well, I knew it was going to be trouble and so did Gil
‘Cause he was already on the phone to the cods

The haddock hits me with a sucker punch
I catch him with a left hook
He eels over
It was a fluke but there he was
Lying on the deck, flat as a mackerel
Kelpless

I said "Forget the cods Gil
This guy's gonna need a sturgeon"
Well, the yellowtail was impressed with the way I landed her boyfriend
She came over to me, she said
"Hey, big boy, you're really a game fish
What's your name"
I said "Marlin"

Think I had a wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Wet dream

Well, from then on we had a whale of a time
I took her to dinner, I took her to dance
I bought her a bouquet of flounders
And then I went home with her
And what did I get for my trouble
A case of the clams

Think I had a wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

Wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

Wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

Stopped at a tag sale this morning. Found some interesting stuff in the record bin: some recordings of the WVU Marching Band prior to the arrival of the man who turned them into The Pride of West Virginia, and the first (by 10 days) Beatles album released in the US.

Now if I just had a record player. :)

I've never been able to replicate the taste of my local Japanese restaurant's gyudon. This morning I find this at the local Asian market...

If it tastes reasonably close, I'm grabbing a whole bunch of 'em :D

It shames me to admit, but when it comes to Asian cuisine (except for American Chinese food), I'm totally lost in the dark. You seem to know your stuff. If you've got the time, could you list stuff I should try at -say- a Japanese restaurant?

My favorite place is best described as a Japanese lunch counter. The chef isn't going to cook at your table or serve up all the fancy nigiri sushi. What he has in abundance is Japanese comfort food.

Gyudon, or beef bowl is your standard Japanese fast food. it's thinly sliced beef simmered with onions in a savory broth, served on white rice. Katsudon is a breaded pork cutlet and egg served on white rice. It's tradition for Japanese students to eat this the night before a major test or entrance exam. Last on my list of favorites is the teriyaki chicken bowl. Simply grilled marinated chicken on white rice garnished with pickled slices of daikon radish.

Miso soup is another traditional Japanese food you've got to try. I don't get it often 'cause I usually get my bowls to go. :)

There's certainly more, but these are my favorites.

Thanks, man. I'll certainly give those dishes a try. There are tons of Japanese places in my area I've never been to for fear of looking like a dope when ordering.

To put it more clearly, Yoshinoya (the maker of the stuff in that image) is basically the McDonalds of Japanese food. Though they ARE franchising into America now, mainly in Hawaii and the West Coast I think.

Yeah there's basically one in every Chinese mall.

The beef and onion wasn't reasonably close... It was damn near perfect. Went right back to the shop and grabbed 5 more packs. :)

One of the blogs I found mentioned adding a raw egg to your gyudon. I never knew this was a thing. Might try that after I get home from work.

They make prepackaged rice bowls with the water already included. You just have to remove the outer wrapper and chuck it int the microwave. I should grab a stack of those too to get out of the sideshot habit for work lunches. For more health benefits, I can get the brown rice bowls. :)

There were two of them in the San Diego area. None here on Oahu as far as I can tell.

My weekend is here, and I bury the angst of the week and the horror of this morning with a hearty helping of gyudon with egg. No beni shoga, unfortunately. :p
