Freeze, Scum. I'm Batma...er...Robocop.

Repost from Reddit.

Surprisingly the responses were more toward disliking the updated version and liking the all matte black version more.

....wait. The one on the RIGHT is the one fan's hate? But...IT LOOKS SOMEWHAT LIKE THE ORIGINAL NOW! I can actually get behind this movie now! The only reason people complain about the updated version is because they obviously have never seen the original franchise. Course....that's also most likely why the Bayformers are so popular. So I expect them going back to the original costume very likely.

Among the two, I gotta say the all-black one sucks less.

The half-silver one looks like he's wearing something like one of those really short jackets that girls sometimes wear. You know the ones I'm talking about? They have long sleeves, but the torso part stops like five inches below the armpits.

If they're going with a slimmed-down superhero-esque version of the suit (as in the pic), the black one looks a lot better IMO. Maybe if they painted the entire thing that mottled silver color instead of leaving the torso black, I would like it better. The original suit worked in metallic grey because he actually looked like a giant machine-monstrosity.

This suit looks more like Judge Dredd turned into an anime, and for that, all-black looks better.

I think the only way this movie is going to work is if they include the original version somehow. I know the original actor won't return (because that suit fucking SUCKS to be in) but someone in the suit and maybe some dubbed lines would go a long way towards me seeing this.

Alternatively, add some color to the suit. Matte black is boring. Toss some red or maybe police blue on there to make him pop out from the background, because right now he looks more like a piece of military hardware than something built to serve and protect.

Well, OCP has military interests, right? It'd actually make some sense if Robocop is a small scale test run for an armed forces contract, just for an example.

They'd still change the paint scheme for public relations reasons. You don't want your walking death machine to LOOK like one to the public. You want it to look like a stern, but fair officer of the law. Which is why they'd paint it a different color. Just look at the original Robocop: his stylized silver exterior was meant to invoke a feel of an ultra modern tool... but all his in-universe propaganda played up his officer of the law persona, like when he met up with the school children in the first one.

I dunno, seems like the police are becoming more militarized these days; various police departments have tanks and unmanned aerial drones. And given Robocop's overall dystopian viewpoint, it makes sense to me. I mean, I agree about making him look less militaristic, but I wouldn't fault the filmmakers for going all black. Still, I hope the conjecture by others is correct, and that this is some kind of "pre-Robocop" suit.

I could see them using it as a mo-cap kind of thing, then adding on a layer of CGI.

And yes, it's true that they have those things... but they usually paint them in police colors and have identifying marks on it. I think that's the big issue with the current design: He doesn't have any Detroit Police emblems or initials or other identifying marks on it. Making it look intimidating it one thing, but you have to put that stuff on their so people know what it is.

To be fair, neither did the original Robocop, unless one considers bluish-silver an identifiable police color.

That could always be an evil robocop. Does anyone remember that terrible made for tv movie miniseries where they made another cyborg cop that looked just like robocop, but was shinier with a silver visor?

No? Me neither.

His name was Robocable.

..........I mean, me neither.

People saying new Robocop looks like Batman, all I saw was Iron Man suit spray painted matte black with a tron lightcycle helmet.

I've kind of hit the point where I'm putting my foot down on these things. I will avoid this like the plague unless reviews and word of mouth proclaim it to be the second coming.

At least the wave of comic movies are original in that they're adaptations of another medium, but I'm not going to watch the same movie I watched as a child any more. I'm sick of all these movies riding a wave of nostalgia and absolutely nothing else.

Also, THIS is what my generation has to contribute artistically? Regurgitating what they saw as a child.

Generation X indeed.

I'll say this much though: At least now I can see that he IS indeed marked as a police officer. He has a badge over his heart. Still, it should be colored and more easily readable.

But that wouldn't be h84dk0re grimdark in the eyes of out-of-touch studio executives.
