[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Would you mind giving a summary of his side? While I'm somewhat curious, I'm not keen on sitting through a random podcast.

He tells it that he came in, said, "Hey guys, this forum is no longer about PVP, so I can't in good conscience keep paying for it, so you need to go find somewhere else to have a community."

Kurtz tells a pretty different tale of the destruction of the Halfpixel forums to audiences.
I thought he would be more of a dick, to be honest. At the very least he could have owed up to just wiping the forum without warning. Now it sounds like he tried to reason with the forumites and then pulled the plug.

But other than that... I'm not going to get my underwear in a bunch over this. Kurt was a douche, old news to me.

What. A. Crock. Of. Shit.

And just to remind everyone, It wasn't Kurtz that pulled the plug. It was Straub.

Whoops, sorry. I didn't realize there were several posts after that. Still waking up this morning. :p[DOUBLEPOST=1350734931][/DOUBLEPOST]He did say those things...after he shut down the forums without any warning.

My rebuttal:

I have to offer a rebuttal here about the whole HalfPixel forum...thing.

On November 27 of 2008 the Halfpixel forum was shut down, unceremoniously. He did not come to us and say anything about how the community was fracturing away from his brand. He said,in fact, nothing at all before the place was killed. Now let's be clear, after that fact and we started our own forum (which is still going on today) there were some things said on both sides that I wish had been left unsaid. But the bottom line is that Scott can whitewash it all he wants today and try and paint his actions in the most positive light, he did not give any warning or try and reason with the community in the least before pulling the plug.

Now, having said that, there are a couple things I want to point out.
  • Most of us at the new community - unnamed because it's not about us, but about the misinformation - have always liked and been a fan of PvP, if not always the actions of Scott.
  • With a comic forum, there will be out of necessity a host of other topics generated. You can only go into the minutia of a strip so many times and keep a conversation going.
  • Scott is totally correct when he spoke of the near hostility to new users. It is always one of the biggest problems with a forum. If anyone figures out how to fix this I'm all for it!
  • Scott was a member of Halfpixel, but he was always an aloof one. This is not said to be negative, but he hardly ever posted and never - it seemed - felt a connection to the community or the people therein. I think this is one of the driving issues behind his dumping of the forum. When you have all the pain of the thing and don't participate in any of the good stuff...well...it tends to skew your view on what it is or can be.
In the end, some of our people said and did some stupid and immature things, but they did so because they felt a bit betrayed over the whole thing. I mean, it's 4 years ago and as soon as the podcast was posted this became a topic of conversation! But it all turned out for the better, I think. Scott found a medium better suited to his needs - Twitter mostly - and we found a home that we can control ourselves. And as the Admin to that madhouse, I wanted to pop in here and put n my two cents to tell our side of things.

We still love ya, Scott! But I have to ask: Are you going to conclude the Francis/Marcy marriage arc? You kinda just left it hanging to go off on a Scratch Fury thing.

Can someone summarize the podcast, or at least the section relevant to the forums? I don't feel like listening to the whole thing.

In short:

A forum grows around his brand or product and then develops a mind of its own. Then it becomes hostile to new users and becomes detrimental. Then he kills them nicely and they bitch about it. And this is happened to him twice.

What kills me is they pimp Forumopolis and don't mention us. Bastards.

What the hell is Forumopolis?

I'm pretty sure Scott didn't want to mention us because he views us as the crowd he didn't want (somewhat deservedly probably). We HAVE taunted him about our continued existence a few times... didn't we send him some Halforums swag one time with a mean spirited card?

Scott's still an asshole and a hack though.

Woah, apparently its the official former pVp forum, and it looks aweseome!

Peace out.
I don't recognize a single name, there. Sounds like a fraud.

Perhaps conquest, with a side of forced unification?

Edit, just looked it up - PvP used to have its official forum before switching to Image. It has no connection to PvP, and hasn't since Scott left there.

As such, it's not other members of the former forums, so I must call off the invasion.

....he is ashamed that his forum made a culture of their own? With in-jokes, memes and everything? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! I would KILL to have a fan-base like that, and he just washes us away? FUCK KURTZ!

I remember after Halfpixel got nuked, Scott (or someone) set up another PVP forum proper. As I recall, that's actually how I found Halforums; I went in there looking for answers, and someone mentioned the spin-off site.

Man, that place was weird.

After Halfpixel got nuked, we used my old forum at Bomb Shelter Comics as a place to regroup. A short time after that, Halforums was born.

Don't think I ever made it over there. The place I went to was either a new forum linked from PVPOnline or a re-tooled Halfpixel, I can't quite remember which. Halforums had been up and running for a couple weeks by the time I learned of it.

-edit-

I think maybe the forum I went to was part of webcomics.com? The timeline makes sense, and it does sound familiar.

I think I logged on Halfpixel the week it closed cos I logged on once and then a week later it was gone. All I remember was a thread saying Red-Hulk was gay and then- POOF!

The only time I remember Scott posting on Halfpixel was either:

- Defending something from PVP (once leading to the infamous "Fuck you, it's funny" which my wife and I use on each other at times).

- Attacking/mocking Tim Buckley. Scott was a great contributor to the miscarriage parodying. I loved that.

We sent him some stuff with a NICE note. It thanked him seriously. In truth everything did end up for the better.

I also remember him wanting to do something Shakespeare related with PvP or maybe a separate project. He made a special, pinned thread about it, asking for our help because he wasn't as well read on the bard as we might be.

This was also just before the forums were shut down, which he admitted later he knew ahead of time. That's what always bothered me the most about the forums shutting down: he wanted to get rid of us, but wanted a use for us one last time.

Damn, thats cold Kurtz. That is like one of the evilest things I've heard someone doing forum related. What's even worse is I don't even think he DID that Shakespeare storyline, did he? I honestly am not sure, I'd have to go through the archives again.

I think there was one strip that involved fart jokes in Canterbury Tales... but that's a stretch at best.
