Pen & Paper Role Playing Games

Using this thread cause I'm not sure where else it would fit.

What D&D podcasts are people listening to (if any)?

I dropped Critical Role years ago because it started feeling too arduous to keep up with. It took me a bit to start listening again but now I've picked up a bunch.

My favorite by far is Worlds Beyond Number, but I also listen to Dimension 20, Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDpod), and my teen's favorite Just Roll With It.

Mostly just looking to see if anyone else wants to nerd out about podcasts. :D
A reddit post led me to that video with Deborah Ann Woll, turns out she made a video series called Relics snd Rarities where she DMs and it's good.

Thanks to YouTube recommendations, I stumbled across a video about Deborah Ann Woll talking to Charlie Cox about D&D. Actually, it started with a short clip from that video, then I found the full video. I fell down the rabbit hole and found Relics & Rarities, a short series of game sessions with a revolving guest chair (for one-session players like Cox, Matthew Lillard, Kevin Smith, or others). And I found myself completely enamored by not just Woll's DM'ing abilities, but the overall presentation. I finished watching the whole thing over the weekend.

It got me thinking of finding other live D&D campaigns to watch. I know Critical Role is the king of them, so I downloaded the first season of Vox Machina, which I'm enjoying more than I expected. Given how long Critical Role has been running, I'm not sure if I'm up for watching that from the beginning. But I might seek out other live playing like it.

I found a long-standing Rifts campaign that I might start listening to, since I grew up on Palladium games and still have a soft spot for that broken, unbalanced system. Kinda wish I could find a Heroes Unlimited or TMNT live play, but Palladium obviously isn't a popular system.

Any other recommendations, aside from Critical Role?

Dimension 20 is fun short bite campaigns but you need Dropout.

If you want podcasts, my favorites are NADDpod and Worlds Beyond Number.
(NADDpod and D20 are more comedy based, Worlds Beyond Number is dramatic storytelling)

Dimension 20. Most of them are on YouTube. Brennan Lee Mulligan is an amazing DM.

They post a lot of the early D20 on YouTube. Dropout us the best deal in streaming, though.

If by a lot you mean 2 full season 1s, and a 6 episode season.

They do post every first episode of a season on YouTube as a teaser though.

Maybe they took a bunch down? I watched more than 1 season on YouTube before ever subscribing to Dropout.

Actually, three full games is a lot, yeah. Maybe that is all I saw once upon a time.

Timely:

For Canadian content, Loading Ready Run have a series on YouTube called Dice Friends. They've done d&d, vampire, and other ttrpgs. All with different DMs running things.
I will second this, especially look for the campaigns run by Dale, see: Escape from Semolo Plateau, the sequel to that Dragon's Orders, or Trouble in P4RA-DI5E (in the Paranoia system w/ the Red Clearance rules), but all of the ones I have watched have been fun.

In an update to this, I've become absolutely OBSESSED with The Legend of Vox Machina. It's all I've been watching lately.

But thanks to that 'ol ADHD hyperfixation, I've also been finding "table to screen" comparisons between the best animated moments and the live play moments with Critical Role. Seeing the live play clips and how they were adapted, it's amazing how much they adapted from the game, like some incredibly badass natural 20 role moments. It's causing me to become more familiar with Critical Role to the point that I might start watching their live play show. I've become completely enamored with each and every character.

Of course, there's just...so much to tackle. I might skip Campaign 1 since I'm basically watching that now with the animated series, and start maybe on Campaign 2 or 3. Or I might just wait and start at Campaign 4, whenever that starts. From what I understand, while they're connected, each campaign includes a whole new cast of characters for each player? I always assumed they were playing the same characters throughout, but no.

I tried Critical Role and while I do think there is a lot to love I just can't do the time commitment needed to stay on top of it all.

Yeah this is right, the individual seasons are in the same world and maybe even time period? but are different PC's

That's really it. There's just...so much. Each episode is several hours long. I might stick to the animated series and enjoy watching live play clips on the side.

Also meant to say, I know you had worked at a Blockbuster towards it's end and I didn't see it mentioned in their big intro the campaigns video but you may like Never Stop Blowing Up from Dimension 20.

It might hit too close to home I guess but I thought it was a lot of fun. D20 is more...digestible? with shorter episode lengths and seasons overall but I know you'd said above some of the gimmicky stuff they do wasn't your cup of tea. Figured I'd put it on your radar anyway if it wasn't already.

Well shit. I'm currently illustrating for publishing. But I have the receipts to prove I have had the name in writing and copywritten since the mid 90's.

Each campaign takes place in the same world, Exandria, but usually focuses on a different continent. Campaign 2 takes place about 20 years after campaign 1 and campaign 3 about 10 years after campaign 2.

They started doing "critical role abridged" which condenses the episodes down to about an hour and a half and cuts out all the planning, side talk and stuff and is just the actual story. They're only up to episode 48 and this is only for campaign 3 though.

Re: Critical Role, there's a 3 episode mini campaign being DM'ed by Sam Riegal right now, about kids at adventurer camp, which does include C2 people but you really don't need to have C2 knowledge to understand it.
