The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

I would love to, but the kind of travel I'm doing will have me working at hospitals 12 hours a day until I'm done - no time to take the kids or enjoy the sights. My new responsibilities include quarterly trips to such exotic locales as Fort Dodge, Iowa; Paducah (and surrounding area), Kentucky...

The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

Wow, I just came here to post almost exactly the same thing, except I'm in physics rather than engineering, and my extra hours come in the form of overnight travel. I don't have seven kids, though (only 3 and 2x0.5). The extra money is nice, but it remains to be seen whether it's worth the...

Washington D.C. to Wal-Mart: We're raising minimum wage... but just for you

Yes, things are unbalanced. But that appeals to the nebulous notion of "fairness". What I asked for is a definition of obscene. Is it $1B/year in profits? Also, the problem with this sort of logic is that it assumes that these business will be willing to take a hit in profits to comply with...

    [Question] How tall are you?

I've been 6'6" since I was 14. I've given myself a concussion twice by standing up into light fixtures over the dining room table. Buying pants is a hassle, buying shirts is damn near impossible (I have a 16.5" collar and a 37" sleeve length). People ask me to reach things a lot. My wife says...

.... I don't have DOTA 2. I rarely buy any games though, so maybe I just missed the event when these billions of keys were given out? Sent from my SPH-l900 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

[News] 3 women missing for over a decade found alive

I remember hearing about these girls in America's Most Wanted bits on XM radio, six or seven years ago. Holy crap. Also, I drive through this neighborhood about once a week. I know exactly where this house is. Double holy crap.

Donating blood works for that extra iron. So sayeth Mayo Clinic (and me, a carrier of hereditary hemochromatosis).

The Random Crap Thread 2: It Hits the Fan.

Not so! I haven't listened to Ayreon in about ten years, but I think I burned a hole in my Human Equation disc. Being too lazy to actually go look, how is their more recent stuff? Any interesting guests?

After years of holding off, I got my first smart phone.

Yeah, I really want a Nexus 4 too, but they've been out of stock for the past month or so, and don't look to be coming back in stock for a while yet. It's a damn shame, too... my upgrade is coming next month, and the $50 unlimited everything plan on Straight Talk with a Nexus 4 is the only...

    Christmas Gifts 2012

Got my wife a coffee bar for Christmas this year: Krups burr grinder, Chemex pot, Aeropress brewer, Ikea milk foamer, and some homemade vanilla, cinnamon, and gingerbread syrup. It's been a huge hit, and we haven't been to Arabica or Caribou in the past week. Next up is a small roaster and a...

Obama calling for more gun control

I understand this, but my point was more to illustrate the point that education is the antidote to fear than to draw a direct correlation between cars and guns.

Obama calling for more gun control

The problem lies in "mandatory" though. Driver's ed classes are mandatory because you basically have to know how to drive a car in order to make a living nowadays. Nobody is forced to own a gun. However, those who choose not to learn about gun safety and use, and then choose not to own a...

Obama calling for more gun control

We have mandatory drivers education, and nobody demonizes cars. I would say that gun safety classes in high school would go a long way towards restoring firearms to the status of a tool, rather than the objects of demonization AND glorification that they currently are.

Obama calling for more gun control

I don't see what's so wrong with ensuring that a person has the knowledge, physical and mental capability, and personal and social responsibility to understand the consequences of their choices before they are allowed to do something that could cause massive disaster and destruction, like own a...

    Rant VIII: The Reckoning

I chat with them all the time. I talked to them last weekend, on Saturday, between the heart attack and the hospitalization. Their rationale is "we just didn't want to worry you." While I get that, what I don't get is not letting your loved ones know in advance of a procedure, minor though it...
