I talked shit about the Giants last year, and their season turned out okay (I guess), so I'll do it again.

The Giants are seriously fucked in their starting rotation, which used to be their strength. Sure, Bumgarner's great; he has been for years. But after that you've got a guy coming off major surgery (Cain), a guy who has to recapture former glory AGAIN (Peavy), a guy who just turned 40 (Hudson), and a guy with serious mental problems with his mechanics (Lincecum). So what do they do? Sign another older player who seems to be fading (Vogelsong).

Ugh.

#9

In case you haven't heard, Will Ferrell is planning on playing for 10 different teams in the Cactus League today. The stunt is to raise awareness for cancer research and for those affected by cancer.

I'm kinda glad he didn't end up playing in a game involving the Brewers.

Why not cancel the game? or move it to a temporary location?
You can't cancel. Every team has to play 162 games in a year. As for moving it, I don't think they had any realistic options. They already moved the location for their weekend series with Tampa Bay.

Is it too early to start shooting pitchers? Our big upcoming pitcher from last year pulled a "Wild Thing" on us and came back for his second year completely stuck in his own head. He went from just blowing pitches by the batters to trying to throw 4 seamers, and sinkers, and curve balls, and such - and now he's almost completely useless. Case in point, tonight's game against the Padres. I turn the game on 18 minutes after it started and it should be over by that point, 4 - 0 Mariners in the bottom of the 1st with 1 out and 1 on. The Pads get out of the inning with their starting pitcher throwing just a few more than 20 pitches in the first (35). Second inning starts off looking good, get's a pop out, then a fly out, and then the wheels fall off. Walks the next 3 consecutive batters, loading the bases, and gets luckier than any man has a right to on the 4th batter, who pops out to short on a (4th consecutive) full count. Short of buying the douche a Harley and getting him to sleep with a hot young teacher, I really don't know what can be done for the poor fucker if he can't get out of his head sometime soon.

Yeah, the Houston Firstros doesn't really have the same ring to it, but it's hard to deny that they've been doing pretty well this year. Don't have a whole lot of competition. Seriously though, how the fuck do you go out and hire Cano, Cruz, and Trumbo, only to have Cano fade away and Cruz and Trumbo combine for 32 strikeouts and 0 extra base hits in the month of June? Hell, for that matter, how the hell do you have three straight batters strike out looking in one inning? These guys aren't even fucking trying anymore.

When Fox will insist on keeping the Sawx as their prime Saturday games, no matter how deep into last place they are, they're in the top tier of evil. When ESPN talking heads lend support to changing the rules of the game for the sole benefit of the last-place Sawx, they're in the top tier of evil.

In (somewhat) related news, when I did the Dirty Girl run, we got to run through the layers of Citi Field. Despite being the home of the Mets, it really is a nice stadium. It was good to know where they store all the beer...in case of emergency, of course. ;)

It was also really cool to get to run in the outfield of a pro stadium. I wish I had gotten some photos of that part, even the dorky one of pretending to catch a fly ball against the back wall.

Oh yeah. My question wasn't really directed to your experience, since you kinda went to the the game as a tourist. I was thinking about the people like me who regularly go to hometown games.

But now I'm thinking that is indeed part of the answer to my question. People go as tourists, and so are willing to pay extra "for the experience"

#81

My experience, in the past, has been having nothing to do on a Thursday afternoon while everyone else was at work, so I'd sit in the cheap seats and read a book.

See, that makes me sad. Watch a Giants game on any given day, even an afternoon one on a weekday, and there is always a packed house. Then I see a game at Dodgers stadium on TV on a weekend, and there's hardly anyone in the stands, and most of those who ARE there leave by the 7th inning.

Yeah, there's something special about the Giants community. When AT&T opened people treated it like an experience and never took it for granted. In the late 2000's the place began to sellout every night, and obviously since winning a title (and then 2 more) there's been an overwhelming surge of passion. I only see fan bases like that at a few other ballparks, and most of them are more like what @Gruebeard deacribed.

We're spoiled!

#87

Gruebeard

Gruebeard

Hey, I've also gone to plenty of games to watch the game, too. It's just that when I was living downtown Toronto, the Skydome was a nearby place I could spend time outside without feeling like I was loitering on a corner. And the place was empty enough that I felt like I was getting away from the madding crowd.

Okay, that makes me a little sad, too, @Cheesy1

And the Jays do get a crowd. At their worst, they still got enough people to sell out a hockey game. Now that the fans have hope of success after more than two decades, they're selling out again to eager excited fans.[DOUBLEPOST=1439397437,1439397184][/DOUBLEPOST]

That was the way Toronto was, too, when the Skydome was built and the Jays then won back-to-back. But years of losing followed and the passion dwindled.

A discussion was raised on Yahoo Sports about doing away with Divisional Play - or, at least, altering the post-season seedings so that the top three teams in each league get the "first-round bye" regardless of whether or not they won their Division.

Divisions are here to stay, I think - but that concept of rewarding teams with the three best records (regardless of whether or not they won the division) with a bye out of the play-in game is worth considering.

#91

I would much rather do away with interleague play. You want to see those guys? Either spend the money and make the trip yourself, or pressure your team to get gud and make the Series.

#108

Piotyr

Piotyr

It was a textbook takeout slide that looked worse because Kang wasn't anticipating it and stepped into it. If Kang does what every other middle infielder in the game would have done and jumped it, everyone would think it was a good takeout slide that broke up a double play.

As to whether takeout slides are overly dangerous and should be ruled illegal, then definitely.

AL Playoffs:

ALDS 1: Blue Jays vs. Rangers

NL Playoffs:
Wild Card: Pirates vs. Cubs
NLDS 1: Dodgers vs. Mets
NLDS 2: Cardinals vs. Pirates/Cubs

#118

jwhouk

jwhouk

Go 'Stros!

Jays for the sentimentality of it all, and Astros because.

Pirates (ugh) over the Cubs (double ugh) - though I'd root for PNC Park to slide into the Allegheny.

Dodgers set up better against the Mets. Cards will probably steamroll either the Cubs or Pirates, whoever wins the Wild Card Game.

Jays have been off the radar all year, but I think momentum comes on Houston's side. They win the AL pennant.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals. I hate them, but the Dodgers don't have Kirk Gibson on their bench to pull off some miracle.

So - Astros and Cardinals in that "World Series" that you would have been laughed at about years ago - because of improbability, of course.

I hate the Cardinals, but who in this crowd could possibly beat them?

#119

Cheesy1

If the Dodgers fall in the first round again, I will be happy.

I would like to see the Cubs win it this year, just so that like the Red Sox they won't have a stupid curse as an excuse anymore when they continue to suck after that.

I don't get some people. Best record in 106 years and third best in their history, and they (one morbidly obese Ric Flair wannabe radio and TV personality in particular) are still considering this season a failure and their fans suckers.

#121

Piotyr

Piotyr

Yay Cubs for being in the playoffs.

Considering the Cardinals are beat up and missing their best starter for the season, I'd be surprised if they get out of the DS against either the Cubs or Pirates.

Then again, they are the Cardinals and always seem to catch breaks in fortunate situations.

Thing that slightly annoys me: the 95-67 Royals have home field advantage throughout the playoffs, while the 97-65 Cubs can't have home field advantage in any round.

The Pirates. There's one guy who shows up on the weekend sports chat show on WPXI, Mark Madden (our resident wrestling fans may have heard of him), who seems dead set on putting down the Pirates as failures for not winning the division, Hurdle for not ever finishing higher than second (to the Cards all three years), and the fans as suckers for following the team at all. And he does it with the persona of a wrestling heel doing a stand up interview. A couple of weeks ago he even called ALL the viewers of that show stupid.

I guess I can consider not having a tv in the lobby at the new job a perk so I can miss that show on Sundays.

#181

If you want the voters to vote on straight merit, you should not restrict their selections.

That means if they wanna vote in both Ken Griffey Jr. AND Kendrys Morales*, then they should be allowed to do so without having to "game" it that they vote for Kendrys so he doesn't fall of the ballot.

And if someone wants to vote for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Pete Rose AND Joe Jackson - well.

Big news today for Mariners fans, as Nintendo America has announced the sale of their majority stake in the team, and the retirement (when the sale is finalized) of the current CEO. The new CEO has apparently been working in the background for a few years, and has spent all of his life in Seattle, with the exception of the time he was attending Harvard, and was a minority owner of the SuperSonics, who voted against their move to OKC. Sadly, all of this good news was apparently too much for our starting pitcher to bear, causing him to give up 5 runs in 5 innings and to apparently break the wrist of a hit batsman.

As for the Scherzer game, congrats!! This is one of the rarest feats in baseball history. 5 times in 150+ seasons, first time in 15 years. Had a chance for 21, which I'm not sure any of the others have had. Do yourself a favor & preserve the game ticket somehow. I had the misfortune of attending the "Bartman game" at Wrigley in the 2003 NLCS. Unfortunately i left the ticket in my wallet for so long the printing on it faded away so it is now invisible. Of course no one ever believed me anyways, since the ticket said "2003 NLCS Game 3" (it was Game 6, but it was the 3rd game @ Wrigley since they had home-field advantage).

Perhaps frame the photo above (or some other suitable photo from the night) with the ticket below/above?[/QUOTE]

So many what-ifs with them. What if Sen. Symington of MO had minded his own business and let the expansion go on MLB's timetable. What if the franchise hadn't gone bankrupt. What if someone other than Bud bought the team. What if Bud had lost in court right before the 1970 season began.

#224

Gared

I mean, it's hard to be really good when 3 of your 5 starting pitchers are either on the DL or gimped out from tendinitis. It's also hard to be really good when your bullpen has seen so many pitches that they've completely worn out, and your best relief pitcher hasn't even been seen yet due to an injury from the previous season (which has apparently been bothering him on and off for the last 4 years). And, it's hard to be really good when the heart of your batting order goes a combined 20 hits for 90 at bats in 7 games, and one of them has to be sat to get his head back on straight - but at least team management now has the balls to do that, instead of being completely useless or afraid to sit the "star players".

I think the thing that hurts the most, as a Mariner's fan, is that they looked so promising earlier in the season. Felix obviously didn't have his old stuff - his velocity was down, he wasn't getting the strike calls that he used to, and he wasn't getting people to swing at his off-speed stuff as well as he used to - but the bullpen was solid, Ianetta did a damn good job of keeping all of the pitches in front of him (no matter how off target they were), and we occasionally had some run support for him. Kuma is also getting old (let's face it, the only reason he's a Mariner this season is because he failed the physical for the team that was going to buy him in the off season), but he'd been hanging in pretty well for the most part. Walker was an inconsistent kid, but when he was on, he was really on. Miley took some calming down, but once he was settled in, he became a nice solid pitcher, and Karns has been consistent. But, we have no depth in the outfield (or at SS, really), so an injury to our CF right when his bat was heating up, following an injury to our SS right when his bat was heating up, followed by injuries to the King, Walker, and Miley and we're right back to the Mariners of yesteryear - buying up whatever cheap pitching we can to try to plug all the holes in our starting rotation and our bullpen, and swinging at every god damn pitch in the hopes of hitting enough solo home runs to win games. Now we're in a race to the bottom, and it's tough to tell what's going to get there first - support for the team, or the team's record.

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry, did I say 3 of our starting 5? Surely I misspoke - that's 4 of our 5 starters. Tonight's was scratched before he even threw the first pitch - tightness in his surgically repaired elbow. And, of course, to follow up that wonderful news, one of our best AAA prospects was banned 80 games for PED use.

#225

jwhouk

jwhouk

In case you missed it, MLB put on a baseball game at Fort Bragg, NC - the first regular-season Major League game in North Carolina, and the first ever MLB game played on an active military base.

The game wasn't that spectacular - the Braves are in last place, and the Marlins handled them relatively easily - but the big story was something that happened off the field...

I can't be the only one sick of the David Ortiz Farewell Tour. Well, not so much that as the media gushing over each new career milestone. So he just passed Mickey Mantle on the HR list? Yeah, right. You know how many home runs Mantle hit as a DH? ZERO. Nor a solitary hit. I'm a National League guy, and to me a career DH is half a player. All those accomplishments came with the luxury of sitting on his ass in the dugout when his other teammates had to grab a glove and play the field.

He ain't all that.

career DH's are going to get into the hall of fame since no one on earth gives a solitary fuck about watching pitchers hit and it rules :D also their HRs count exactly the same. also, the best thing about DH's? They never get errors.

I stopped watching once they got to the bottom of the Ninth with only a one-run lead. That's how little faith I have in the Giants' bullpen anymore.

MLB seems to get it. It's not DMCA happy like the NFL is when it comes to posting classic games on YouTube. So you get stuff like this, which was just posted yesterday. I bring you, Disco Demolition Night, July 12, 1979...
I remember the coverage, but in rural Texas we did not get this game.

I genuinely don't see the Giants winning it all. Their offense is wildly inconsistent, their bullpen is crap, and the starting rotation can only do so much. Still, it's nice they got this far.

I predict the Giants *might* beat the Mets, but if they do the Cubs will take them in 4. I see either the Cubs or Nats winning it all.

Nowadays, if the Sawx and Yankees are hot, the other three teams in the East are playing for the second wild card.

The Cleveland Indians last won the World Series in 1948.

The Chicago Cubs last won in 1908. It had been so long that it had become a joke throughout the league.

This also was game 7 in a best of 7 series after the Cubs had rallied from being down 3-1.

So, one or another of the massive droughts was going to end tonight. The game had crazy ups and downs for both teams and went to extra innings before being decided by the final of 8 - 7.

I also used the Cubs as a joke in my history lectures.

The last time the Cubs won a World Series...

1. The Titanic hadn't even been laid down
2. The Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires were still around
3. Germany was ruled by a kaiser
4. Russia was ruled by a Tsar
5. China was under the Qing Dynasty
6. New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii hadn't been admitted into the Union
7. Teddy Roosevelt was president
8. US Civil War veterans were still alive and kicking
9. Newfoundland hadn't been confederated
10. Geronimo and Red Cloud were still around
11. TV wasn't a thing yet. MOVIES were barely a thing
12. Jim Crow laws were the norm

I can't use any of those as punchlines anymore.

How about the fact that they managed to string together a whopping 3 hits off of Keuchel while getting shut out on opening night? I don't think they're going to get to a point where the bullpen is going to be the issue. We had an interesting ride, but I couldn't even call it a good ride, since they were only half-way decent for 5 of those 20+ years, and not consecutively. Sure, today is only day 6 of the season, but far beyond their 1 - 4 opening record is the fact that last night, at the end of yet another loss, 8 of the 9 players on the line-up were hitting .200 or less - with the 9th batter being hitless. They can't play defense, they can't hit the ball, and half the time it looks like they couldn't care less out there. Since losing to the Angels last night, Seattle is tied with the Giants for last place. This team no longer deserves my loyalty, so I will bid them adieu.

I stepped away from the Astros recently. Actually I did not have a choice, it was more like they pulled away from me. They had their one World Series appearance and then held a fire sale to rid themselves of value, sold the team, and went on deeper cost cutting measures. The icing on the cake, they switched to a TV deal where less than one half of the fan base had any chance of watching them on TV.

But on the up side, they built their team up the right way, by building up their minor league franchises and they have picked up a lot of good talent.

Now they are back on a widely available network, and they are fielding a competitive team. So I am back after 5-10 years in the wilderness.

Russell Wilson said last year - before the season began - that he was surrounded by the best, most capable players he'd ever played with. He then proceeded to get sacked 16 times in the first 4 games, and was injured on two of them. Sure, they made it to the playoffs - even as NFC West Champions - but since everyone else in the NFC West had losing records, with two of them being the 49ers at 2-14 and the Rams at 4-12, it would have been hard not to make the playoffs. And then, true to last season's Seahawks form, they won their wildcard game and lost in the divisional round to Atlanta, behind a running performance that was so piss-poor that Wilson had the most rushing yards of any player, with 49 (Wilson also had the most rushing yards against the Cards with 36 and the Buccs with 80, to whom we lost 34-31 and 14-5). They got lucky last year, and I don't know how much more luck they have in them.

In fact, the city's only consistently good sports franchise is the one that gets the least love, the least attendance, and the least press: The Seattle Storm - who, in their first three seasons, went to the conference semifinals twice and then brought home the championship in their 3rd season. In fact, you have to go all the way to their 7th season before they failed to make the playoffs. I could post something similar about the Sounders, potentially, but ESPNFC is just crap. The other teams may make the playoffs once in a while. They may make it to, or even win their championship. But, inevitably, it all falls apart without setting up the dominant dynasty that we saw from teams like the Yankees, the Cowboys (from Aikman's era), the Bills, the Patriots, the Celtics, the Bulls, or the Lakers. Ownership around here, and potentially the fan base - it may run deeper than I know - just aren't patient enough with any given group of managers/staff/talent to give them a chance to win, for the most part.

I mean, getting back to baseball, since 2002 the Mariners have had 9 managers. Nine. Some of them lasted a whole season - and there's already a serious call for Servais' head because he's not "demonstrative" enough (by which they mean they want to see the guy throw bases at umpires and get thrown out more often, because poor sportsmanship is to be idolized, I guess). Of those 9, Mike Hargrove abruptly resigned mid-winning season, because his "passion" was fading away (and potentially because of a rift between himself and Ichiro); John McLaren was named as his replacement and then fired less than a year later (mid-season again) because the Mariners had the worst record in baseball and were paying $100M for the privelege; Jim Riggleman finished off the 2008 season, but wasn't kept on; Wakamatsu managed for almost two whole seasons before being fired; Brown finished out that season, and then went back to managing the Tacoma Rainiers; Wedge suffered a stroke mid-season and had to step down at the end of it; McClendon had one successful (meaning winning) season and then was cut the next year following a bad season (though primarily because we had a new FO and they wanted to work with their people, not Jack Z's). But at least with our former managers they've pretty much all gone on to suck at their next jobs too - unlike with our former players, who go on to have league-leading seasons and win dozens of World Series'.

It's like the Cleveland Browns quarterback roster in here.

Never believe a word any player says during the preseason. Ever. Because if you ask them, every player is in the best shape of their life, their teammates are the best guys ever to walk on the field, and they're going all the way to the championship this year. Players lie before the season starts, without fail.

Of course they do, and then they lie all season long. Sometimes their lies get the entire team penalized in draft picks, practice times, money, etc. - I'm lookin' at you, Sherman! Not reporting an injury for half a damn season, I swear.

Hey - I'm not debating that the Seahawks have been good, all I'm saying is that they - like the Mariners and Sonics - will fall to almost laughable season records, probably for decades, before they play in another Superbowl game, much less win one - as opposed to certain teams that, if unable to win their championships, at least played in them enough times, back to back, to be considered dynasties and to build up diehard, loyal fan bases. And yes, I would like it if the Seahawks were more like the Bills. At least when I hear the name "The Bills" I think of Jim Kelly, his battle with cancer, and the way that the team and its fans have come together to support him. When I hear the name "The Seahawks" I think of Marshawn Lynch grabbing his junk as he showboated his way across the goal line, or Richard Sherman trash talking the entire league or getting in fights with the coaching staff on the sideline during games.

Edit: And if they prove me wrong I'm going to say the exact same thing about each of my favorite teams every year.

There's simply no team but the Jays for me, and I went to a ton of their games when I lived in Toronto during the time were sucking badly after their World Series repeat

But for the last few years I have rather given up on baseball in general, so I actually felt like a bit of a bandwagon jumper when they finally made it back to the playoffs the past couple years.
