So now we're going to get finger printed if we go to the states. How soon before we have to wear a maple leaf in their country so they'll know where we're from.
I’m not saying this is right, but I am saying I highly doubt this one happens (the finger print or the maple leaf).

edit: apparently Canadians have always had to do this when flying to the US? That’s bizzare to me. Doing it for driving is stupid and pointless. As someone who has done the driving border crossing between the two countless times, the traffic is bad enough and this is going to make it 1000x worse. Fucking idiots.

Well, plenty of Americans already wear maple leafs abroad to pretend they're Canadian (because the USA is not particularly well-liked in many subcultures like hikers and backpackers etc), it only makes sense you guys would wear one too.

And they just reversed the requirement.

Gosh darn this here stable guvment is gud fur de conomee.
Every other stupid or ridiculous thing they claim will go into effect never does. But some of the more dangerous ones do, and don't get the attention they world because of this. It's a plan.

"I think to a certain extent we are anthropomorphizing a company here," Muenkel says. "A company is not a human being for which you can basically assign something like a citizenship."

I find this quote very interesting. Like, it was my understanding that companies WANT to be anthropomorphized. That's why they have X accounts that 'joke' and they can apply for all the same rights as an individual person.

Just makes me think this person is a bit delusional to be upset at people taking a hard look a Tim Hortons. For decades now, afterall, we've been told corporations are 'people'! Do they think that's just going to go away?

Well Tims has been beating us over the head for years with how Canadian they are they are a part of our heritage.

It's shit but convenient coffee, at a place that employs our kids for their first job.

Ha. My kid is trying to get his first job and has been rejected from every fast food place, including Tim's. There's a lot of refugees here at the moment.

I'm glad folks are making a life for themselves! I fully support immigration and taking in as many people as we can! I kinda think boarders and nationalism are some of the worst things the human race has ever concocted.

Unfortunately, I do think the days of 'kids first job in the service industry' might be gone. It's just...easier to abuse a person who is far from home than a kid that has parents that support them and are a little aware of their rights.

That's a whole other conversation, though.

I have a buddy I've had since high school. His dad was general manager of an olive garden when we were 17. He unabashedly said that he (the whitest white guy you ever met) didn't hire white kids because "they don't want to work. They don't want to be there... they just want to clock in, do as little as possible, and clock out with a paycheck. They think they're doing you a favor just showing up. The Mexican kids, though, THEY want to work. I'll hire any immigrant kid even if he doesn't speak english over a local white kid, any time."

That was 30 years ago.

As a natural-born citizen and resident of the USA, I fully support and encourage your decision.
Go ahead and push US tourism and trade off a cliff, if that's what it takes to sideswipe enough of these people out of their narrow-minded death march to oblivion. Don't worry about the rest of us, we will happily loot their corpses once they're finished.

Yup.

I had hoped to go to DC and area in the near future to visit museums and such, but ya. Nope. Not gonna happen.
And same goes for any cruises leaving from the States. Not gonna happen.
The truth is you’re almost certainly going to be fine. I’m not saying there’s no chance of something bad happening to you, but at the border here it is overwhelmingly business as usual. And as someone who has been to other countries that absolutely would be considered repressive dictatorships, being a tourist and not going to protests or anything means you can just go about your business.

If you want to boycott traveling here for ideological reasons then that’s reasonable (and probably the right thing to do) but solely not doing it out of fear of being Gestapoed is like the equivalent of being scared of flying when you’re significantly more likely to die on the drive to the airport.

Honestly, it's a bit of both.

The US Border services folks are... swingy at the best of times, which these are absolutely not. And given the conditions for detainment, it would likely be severely detrimental to my mental and physical health - and liberal clergy are likely not the sort of folks to pass through the border unquestioned at the moment.

And I have no interest in spending my tourist dollars propping up whatever the fuck is going on down there right now.

So - some of column A, and some of column B.

Federal Politics 101
The Liberal candidate will be a civil servant who looks okay in a sweater.
The Conservative candidate will always wear a suit and believes that a good handshake and blaming the Liberals is all they need to do to win.
The NDP candidate are frustrated that we have no conceptual idea who they are but vaguely remember them from kids events at school.
The Green Party candidate is over the moon thrilled that you acknowledge their existence.
The CPC candidate makes you want to take a shower and burn the clothes you are wearing.
The Bloc candidate is drunk but buying the next round and really happy to be in Labrador City.

The CPC candidate makes you want to take a shower and burn the clothes you are wearing.
Do you mean PPC? My understanding is those are the Canadian version of the MAGATs while CPC is just the regular conservatives (aka people ideologically aligned with MAGATs but with an ounce of shame).
