Conan O'Brien Leaving (AKA Fuck NBC)

Let's see how long the Tonight Show lasts now that everyone knows that Jay is a crook. I imagine he's going to be hard up to find quality guests for awhile and his ratings are definitely going to suffer, as he's likely to lose a large portion of Conan's old audience over this.

As for Conan... if NBC DOES try to keep him off the air, it's going to be a rough few years. But I could definitely see Fox or maybe even Comedy Central trying to get him.

I don't think it would hurt him much. Stars usually have to do these shows to gain publicity for their movies/shows/whatever. He pissed off a lot of people when he took the job from Letterman, he did just fine after that.

Wow. Super lame. The worst part is he's probably going to do just fine and most of America won't care.

Perhaps, but I still imagine stars are going to be trying to get Letterman, Fallon, Kimmel, or Carson Daily over him now.

In any event, he's basically guaranteed that he's going to be in second place for now on. I doubt he's going to regain his audience after these shenanigans without some really impressive stuff.

I'm guessing Letterman will be leading the pack ratings wise for a long time now. I can't imagine Leno getting his old ratings again. He isn't going to be hurting, but his golden years are gone now.

It does make you wonder though... is there currently any plans for who will get Late Night once Letterman retires? I know Ferguson is their other late night guy, but I could see Conan taking over that show once Letterman retires. He definitely has more clout and appeal than poor ol' Craig at any rate.

I was surprised that Craig was actually fairly close to Conan in ratings when they were competing. I'm not a big fan of Craig though, mainly cause I can hardly understand him sometimes.

I haven't even heard a whisper of Letterman thinking of retiring. The guy will probably go until he croaks.

I think Ferguson is expecting Letterman's show once Dave retires.

Goddamn Leno. Seriously. Goddamn. This has pissed me off more than I rationally know it should, but as I read the TMZ article I found myself literally grinding my teeth. That fucking no-class douchebag. What pisses me off the most is that I know he'll do fine in his insipid stupid fucking show and Conan won't get another shot at the big time for a long while, if ever.

Argh.

Calfornia has consistently shot down "non-compete" agreements (think, "You can't work for our competitors or in our line of business for 2 years after you leave us") for years in the engineering profession. I'd be surprised if they were able to lock out Conan.

He's getting the raw end of the deal, but if they've already offered the job back to Leno prior to severing the contract with Conan, then they are likely going to buy out their contract with Conan. If so, it'll be tens of millions of dollars to Conan, and that's enough to start your own franchise and shop it around to the other networks.

I'm watching last night's episode on hulu, and this is hilarious!

"I just want to say to the kids out there - you can do anything in your life that you want to.

Unless Jay Leno wants to do it too."

None of which will be interested except Fox, who A) Isn't the best network to risk not being canceled anyway and B) will have a hard-ass time accommodating Conan.

Moving to Fox would be a hard move for Conan I think. As it's already been shown, he isn't doing too hot right now. Competing with Letterman and Leno on the same time slot would be even worse. It'd probably be better than getting bumped though.
The bright side of a Fox show would be more freedom than Conan had with The Tonight Show. Probably more freedom than Late Night, too. Fox has had several late night shows that fell flat (Joan Rivers??? Arsenio Hall??? Chevy Chase??? The only one they didn't try was Carrot Top_but Conan has a proven track record and a following and had a history with Fox. He may not be ) he could bring in the key deomographics that advertisers want.

And Conan will be the top ratings earner and lauded as Late Night's next Johnny Carson.... and then be inexplicably canceled by Fox for no apparent reason, after a few arbitrary time slot changes, right?

I feel sorry for Conan he got screwed. What network will he go on now though?

If he's going anywhere, it's ether to Fox or Cable... and honestly, Cable might just be what Conan needs right now. I still think that having Conan do a show on Comedy Central after the Daily Show/Colbert Report would be a great move. It's got a great lead in and it's on a network that will basically let Conan do whatever he wants.

Wow. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to have Jimmy Kimmel on Leno's show needs to have their head examined.

"Listen, Jay, Conan and I have children," Kimmel pleaded as the segment concluded. "All you have to take care of is cars. I mean, we have lives to lead here. You've got $800 million. For God's sakes, leave our shows alone."

Now what am I going to watch late at night when there's nothing else on on telly and I can't sleep? :(

Also, as a person who would have welcomed Conan had he visited Turku as well... I'm actually surprised this hasn't really appeared in the university papers or anything. I guess people are still trying to get their shit together after New Year's.

What really surprises me is the pathetic display of outrage by NBC execs and Leno trying to act like the move was so unintended. Seriously, you uproot a shit load of people from NY to California, then fuck them over 7 months later, and then have the nerve to act hurt and stunned when the guy lampoons you? Really?
