Damn, yo.

:(

Still though, better to celebrate the music than mourn the passing.

I saw it everywhere and just assumed hoax. Bummer.

Don't know why his death screamed hoax so much more than anyone elses.

Maybe because he just had a birthday and new album release. And no one outside a very select few knew he was sick.

I'll be waiting at Barnes & Noble in the morning for a copy of Blackstar. Everyone who's heard it says he knew this was going to be the last. :(

Well this feels like it came out of left field.

This one really came out of left field. I mean, his new album just hit Friday!

The press has been doing a lot of retrospectives. I wonder if they had an inkling.

No, just a standard procedure to have memorial reels prepped for older well-know stars. As the day progresses we'll have more about his recent stuff, but this morning it will mostly be older clips and voice-overs.

What a crummy way to start the morning.

I don't know why, but his cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "America" has been stuck in my head since I heard the news.

Not this morning, but all week after his album dropped.

Anyway, they are theorizing that his final video is his way of telling people how sick he was. I don't know if I buy it, but that sounds pretty Bowie-esque.

I thought the same thing after seeing the announcement of his death. Like he saw it coming, hence all the recent press, and pushing out Black Star.

#21

Eriol

Eriol

And just think, in another 70 years (if we're lucky) all this re-posting of his music won't be illegal due to idiotic copyright laws! His music will be "protected" *cough*exploited*cough* for longer than he was ALIVE. Sorry about derail, but that's the first thing that popped into my head.

My thoughts go out to his family. Personally, I'm also somewhat freaked out. My Dad's 69, turning 70 this year. So it reiterates that my parents are getting "into the zone" of shit happening. :(

That's too bad. He has had an indelible impact on music and movies.

@Eriol Bowie was just 3 months younger than my dad.

I wish it didn't take his passing for me to find out he was a rapist and a pedophile. But, ya know. You can count the number of male rock stars from that era that didn't fuck little girls on one hand. Like the OP, I'll celebrate the music and skip mourning the man.

This is a valid point. The whole Baby Groupies thing is a creepy stain on pop.

It's OK, everyone! He didn't actually die.
He just quit so he could be Tilda Swinton full-time.

...in all seriousness, it's momentous for me, but not hitting me as much as I thought it might. I suppose it's because I didn't identify with him as much as so many of my fellow weirdos do. 'Twas a different sort of weird.

Of course he saw it coming - he had 6 heart attacks over the past two years and was struggling with cancer.

And yeah, it sucks that he's dead but it doesn't quite hit me as hard as I thought it would.

That's awesome proof. A groupie that was backstage at a drug and alcohol-fueled binge with her mother's consent. Nothing in that shows that Bowie knew the girl's age. No charges were ever filed, no proof other than this interview. As proof goes it's tenuous at best and slanderous at worst. So you'll believe what you want, but I'll go with the innocent until proven guilty thing. And unless you have something more substantial, I don't want to shoulder liability risk. And if you think that can't happen, ask the free ranged chicken.

You know, paedophilia actually has a medical definition.

Trying to bring every morally questionable sexual act under the umbrella of the term kind of does a disservice to actually abused prepubescents.

#36

Bubble181

Eh. I mean, it's fairly openly acknowledged there was a phase during the 70s where there was very little interest/control in who or what rock/pop stars were banging, and that many of the groupies who threw themselves at them were of questionable age. I don't know if pedophile or rape are exactly the right words (queue yet another instance of Charlie calling me a rape apologist in 3...2....1.....); female beauty ideals at the time (and now, again, by the way) were strongly leaning towards "teen"/youth (as opposed to the beauty ideal of late 80s/early 90s, for example, where "big boobs" were a large part of Pamela Anderson's appeal). Combined with the "free love" etc of the time meant a lot of people were acting "above" their age and behaving in adult ways too young (by which I mean, sex with adults). I don't think Bowie - in contrast to, for example, Polanski - ever deliberately searched out girls for their age. I do think he took advantage of/had fun with/... groupies, and didn't bother to ask how old they were - or, probably, cared. That's wrong, certainly from here, looking back, but even in its historical context.
This day and age, I'd imagine any pop/rock star with at least 2 brain cells left to ask a girl if they're 18 (or 16 or whatever the age of consent is at the time and place) before doing too much. Back then, that wasn't exactly a given.
And for those saying it's easy to see and/or clear when someone's 18 or not...Not always. Heck, I just recently learned Mila Kunis only turned 18 during the fifth season of That 70s Show. Yes, knowing that makes me feel icky that I thought she was good looking in some of the earlier seasons too...But she acts and plays just like anyone else in the group - who all are 18.

Anyway, he's a rock star who slept with and did drugs with groupies - willingly on their part. Some of them probably weren't of legal age yet. Does that mean he did something wrong? Yes. Does it mean he's suddenly a monster? No.
