3) How to find a therapist or counselor:
a) Go here: http://therapists.psychologytoday.c...se_Link&utm_campaign=PT_TopNav_Find_Therapist
b) When you put in your city/state narrow your search by selecting anything that is relevant under the "Issues" section
c) If you have survivor of any kind of trauma (major or minor) my wife, an expert in this subject suggests selecting "EMDR" & "Cognitive Behavior (CBT)" under the "Approach" section.
d) It's often helpful to ask for a free 30 minute consultation to see if the therapist is a good fit. It's not strange to find that different people and different therapists sometimes click or don't click. Just make sure you have a good connection with the therapist. A huge part of the reason therapy is effective is because of trust between you and your therapist, so if they aren't a good fit, find a different one.
e) Give it a little time. If you find someone who seems to be a good fit, give them a chance. Therapy isn't something that "fixes" things quickly. Hell, half the time or more the "presenting issue" (What you come in and say is the problem/issue) isn't really the thing that needs the most work so, take it slow and be open to the process.

4) If someone you know, here or in RL, that has expressed a plan to commit suicide, you should act immediately. Never assume that it's a joke, or they won't really do it, or that it's none of your business, call the authorities immediately.

Nice! Yeah, in the link under #2 it has international numbers as well, but the more the better. I added the general info to #1. Thanks man.

Hmm...should this really be here? Or should it be in the Health & Advice thread? Or should it be one of our new FAQs?

No worries man! It didn't include everything you did![DOUBLEPOST=1409259780,1409259743][/DOUBLEPOST]

Great question! Probably the health/advice section I suppose.

I think it's okay to leave it in General for a little while, given the circumstances.

Also, just throwing in a... I dunno, testimonial. A combination of therapy and anti-depressants has worked amazingly well for me. I was depressed and had high anxiety for a very long time. And I just assumed it was part of being alive and I just had to grit through it. The stigma was really strong. Imagine if someone was like, "fuck crutches, this is just how it is" with a broken leg? It's absurd.

Anyways, I was on anti-depressants and through trial / error and talking to people, I got on a combination that made me able to go to sleep without a 30 minute long session of "why I'm worthless garbage" in my mind every night. I didn't seek help for anxiety for too long. But I've been able to get help with that as well. Situations that used to cripple me I now meet with a shrug. I'm even somewhat of a creative type, and not once in the whole process did I have myself "zombified" like people claim that medication does to them.

For the US at least (I have no idea how the mental health system is elsewhere), I know it's incredibly daunting and hard to get help. Even IF (big IF) you have insurance and insurance that covers mental health, it can be hard and incredibly scary. I remember being super nervous about even calling a doctor, the first time, I actually had to get a friend to do it for me. I used the same website above (psychiatry today), and it was able to help navigate things. Without insurance, it's harder, and that's really shitty (thanks Obama), but still possible. I was able to see a therapist with a very low / sliding scale sort of situation when I was unemployed a few years ago.

But yeah, that's my spiel. Good luck.

It really IS daunting to try and get help of so many reasons, finances being one of those reasons. Something to note, a lot of therapists are like my wife, where they do sliding scale stuff for people if you pay cash or credit but don't use insurance and she always takes on a certain amount of low-income/low-paying clients because she knows everyone can't afford normal rates. Some cities will also have local places that offer help of the medical/dental/mental health variety to low income folks, so they are worth searching for as well. Don't be afraid to ask for people to work within your income limitations.

I want to kind of echo what Charlie said. I've also been diagnosed with generalized anxiety (GAD) and depression. I was afraid that if I got on meds I would be spaced out, that my libido would go downhill, that I wouldn't have feelings any more, I'd gain a lot of weight and so on. But once I got a prescription and dosage that was good for me, it has really worked along with the talk therapy! Things that used to set me off I find I can shrug off easier. I do still have periods when I feel "empty" or a bit panicky, but it doesn't last very long where before it would consume me for days or weeks on end. I also like that my therapist does not depend on the medication alone. She always encourages me to exercise, eat healthy, and practice self-care daily. I can honestly say where I am now, as far as my mental health is concerned, is light years from where I was 2 -3 years ago when I finally knew I could not deal with this on my own anymore.

We should also probably include links to domestic violence and sexual abuse resources, shelters, etc.
A lot of that is going to be city/county based and would take to long to actually put together a list of every cities resources but I'll (or anyone else who wants to help) try to find a master resource that directs people to their city/county resources.
