In response to the travesty of omitting Doctor Who from the sci-fi fan ID chart, I hereby nominate this thread to be all about the awesomeness that is the Doctor, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation Kasterberous. He is 903 years old, and he's going to rock your socks off, and those of the six billion on the planet below. You got a problem with that?

I heard it got canceled and that this was the last season. I won't miss it because I never watch it, but whatever.

Here come the drums (Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders) was disappointing, kinda like trying to teach someone how to shift gears and they kept missing 4th to drop into 2nd. The part in the clip here was all that was really good about it.

Still my fave Dr. Song:

This was the last season with David Tennant as the Doctor.

The new series including a return to regular episodes, will begin in April with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, and will act as a pseudo-reboot in the same fashion as the previous series, i.e. same continuity but previous characters and events will not necessarily form a large part of the storyline beyond incidental guest spots.

EDIT: So April will actually be an excellent time to jump in, since you won't need to know much of anything beforehand.

even though i've seen the episodes with this theme many times, it never fails to send a chill up the spine. so awesome.

:p

Seriously, though, I keep meaning to get back to watching more Doc Who.

saw it last night, and it was awesome! i think i'm going to like this new doctor :Dhe definitely seems different enough from tennant. and i can already tell moffats direction is going to be awesome all the way through.

''you're scottish! fry something!'

waiting on my "tv" to finish "loading" the episode. the reviews have been good, so maybe this dude will be decent.. he's no Tennant though :( He'll never be as good as David...*sigh* I miss him already, he is The Doctor to me.

I approve of the new episode. While Smith will never be Tennent, he was still pretty good as the doctor. So far. And his new companion sure beats the hell out of the last one.

Although, giant eyeball aliens? Really?

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with Paranoia, but...

FRIEND COMPUTER IS WATCHING YOU WATCH DOCTOR WHO CITIZEN.

Saw it on the day it aired, and I wasn't disappointed.

That may sound like faint praise, but I like to give a series a few episodes before I reach an opinion on it, and this kept me engaged enough to keep me watching to see whether it'll be a good run or not. Since that's all it had to do, I am content.

Oh, and this may be just me and redheads, but the new assistant? Definitely hot, especially with her hair down.

Finished watching it. Not bad.

New Doctor is quite funny, I'll give him that. We'll have to see if he can bring the seriousness and emotion that Tennant brought but I'll give him more time.

When he was talking to the dude with the laptop, I smiled. The music got that important tone, and he just whispered to the guy "in the next ten minutes, all these leaders will be offering you any job you want. you just need to convince them. convince them who I am and why I can be trusted. Thats all you have to do". I grinned and thought to myself "there you are, i wondered where you had gone to Doctor"

New intro is nice, different but nice.

New T.a.r.d.i.s looks friggin sweet.

The snapping of the fingers to open it, a very very nice nod to River Song and the 10th Doctor. New Sonic Screwdriver! And it's lime green! I miss the blue but I can get used to the green, my favorite color :)

The only thing I didn't like

The foreshadowing of "the silence", in regards to the cracks in the universe. Most likely relating to the season finale, which will probably be about Daleks or Cybermen, again.

Oh and this was awesome in the previews;

Did anyone else wonder if fish custard would actually be tasty? It seems like it might be, assuming custard over there is at least close to what I think it is. I wonder how many Doctor Who fans have already dunked fried fish into various custards and puddings?

That said, I'm thinking that Matt Smith wasn't actually munching on fried fish. It looked like it might be some sort of bread or cake, made up to look like fish.

I ponder the strangest stuff.

I am pretty sure on this that
it has been said countless times that there will be no Daleks or Cybermen in this entire run. So no, it won't be that.
Actually, there have been pics of the re-designed Daleks on the Net for months.

Plus, there was one in the preview at the end of the episode. As well as a whole bunch of cybermen. Doctor Who definitely needs some new baddies to take the spotlight once in a while. That's why I'm so excited that the Weeping Angels from "Blink" may make an appearance soon.

WHAT IN THE HELL OF SHIT DID THEY DO TO THE MAIN THEME!?!?!

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?

That being said... dayumn is the new companion pretty. Seriously... it was a privilege to get to stare at her big eyes for almost an hour. Pretty, pretty girl. Pretty.

And now... I just gotta wait for someone to slap it online in a form where I can watch it.

It's frickin' insane. Ex List is going on a re-run, Lipstick Jungle is on, Fringe came on a re-run barely a year after season 1 finished. And the bastards running the TV companies here haven't shown a single episode of the Tennant Doctor Who.

There's no frickin' justice in the world.

N_R, dude, if *I've* watched it, then it's online. I live in Mexico, remember? Not a big Doctor Who following down here.

Check your usual sources, if you don't find it let me know and I'll PM you a.. uh... "gift certificate".. so you can watch it.

Yes. I agree. Very much so. Her expressions are priceless. I could sit and watch her emote for days.

Just curious what you find distasteful of the new theme? As quoted above, I fell in love with it, though I agree it can be a bit highpitched at times..

T

TwoBit

I didn't really care for the new theme either. I thought it sounded a bit duller than the previous version. And it has an annoyingly cheap snare drum sound in there.

I

Iaculus

Just watched the second episode.

This series is definitely starting to develop its own identity. That particular mixture of darkness and optimism was very Moffat. Seriously, leading us to believe for most of the episode that a kid had been killed off in the first few minutes? The Doctor getting thiiis close to going over the edge? That genuinely sweet little bit at the end? My word.

Looks like they're pulling out the big guns in episode three (episode freakin' three). Spitfires dogfighting with Dalek warships in space? Can I get a HOLY FUCKING SHIT over here?

decent episode

he's no David  I want David back.. why..why did he have to leave

The U.K. in space. On the back of a space whale. I thought it was pretty awesome. And I think I'd say it's an improvement over the previous episode. For one thing it didn't have any giant CGI eyeball aliens.

Do we really need to see the Daleks again so soon? Would it be so bad to have at least one Dalek free season (series) of Who?

Also? David's gone, Mav. GET OVER IT. Like I did.

*Goes off to weep quietly in the corner.*

i thought it was damn good. the smilers were sufficiently creepy, though i was expecting a totally different story with them. nice change i supppose, than 'robot servants going loco and killing everyone' for the umpty umpth time.

favourite lines?

'right then. this isn't going to be big on dignity.' GERONIMOO!'

angry doctor was something of a surprise. this doesn't look like ten at all. i think we've got someone far less enamored with humans in general. i got a faint eccleston vibe when he got really pissed off. he definitely feels more... alien? is that the right word?

''no one human has anything to say to me today!'

and next week looks fucking awesome.

also? terrence fucking hardiman! that guy scared me more than anything in the episode, seriously. i was terrified of him as a kid.

I think he's a clear evolution from where Ten was going, insofar as his views on humans. Ten started in a very admirative place as far as humans were concerned, but I feel like over time he more and more convinced that not only do humans ignore their potential, they often deliberately squander it for personal gain, and he's sick of cleaning up the mess.

While Eleven is a "different" person, he probably remembers at least some (if not all) his time as Ten, and what cleaning up after humans has cost him personally.

I like Eleven so far. He's less sociopathic than Ten, and less broody than Nine, which makes him a bit more of a balanced individual.

I would still really like to see a special dealing with the events of the Time War, the awful things which occurred, the spiritual "falling" of the Time Lords, and presumably, how Eight became Nine.

Are there any places online that have high res images and details on the 11ths Sonic Screwdriver? I want to expand my collection

He PROBABLY remembers? Dude, do you know how time lord regenerations work? He remembers EVERYTHING from ALL his incarnations. It's a different personality, but not a different memory.

I've been so busy with the move in the last week that I didn't realize the first new episode debuted last week. So, I was treated with TWO in a row. Some thoughts, unspoiled since anyone reading this thread should really expect spoilers:

-The change in production: still not sold on the new opening theme, but it's growing on me. I effing LOVE the TARDIS' new "desktop theme", which I believe could be called "steampunk". There's also sorts of oldschool moving parts and it has a retro feeling with a modern twist. Loved the addition of the typewriter and hope we see it again. On top of that, the 50's steampunk theme works great with The Doctor's wardrobe. It's so suiting (no pun intended). Speaking of Doctors...

-Smith is damn good as the Doctor. He hadn't sold me after the first episode, but I saw a lot of potential. I honestly think he has potential to go beyond Tennant, to be honest. Tennant was great but he was a little too...cartoony, sometimes? But the thing that cinched it for me was Smith's "angry Doctor" in this week's episode. It was similar to Tennant's line: "No second chances. I'm that sort of a man." It was the kind of performance that made me believe that he just "out-darked" Eccelston. And Smith's angry performance here was so much fucking better than Tennant's. That alone, like Tennant's "satasuma" moment, filled me with ridiculous amounts of hope.

-Amy Pond is, hands down, the most gorgeous companion to date. That's speaking as a huge Rose fan and, quite honestly in terms of looks alone, Martha, as well. Whether she'll be as great a companion as Donna is yet to be seen, but her hero work at the end of this second episode sold it. She's possibly more capable than the Doctor for seeing that which is unseen. Speaking of which...

-The one thing that I love about episodes by Moffat is that, taken to the core, there are some very basic rules: Don't blink, don't step in the shadows, etc. They're almost child-like warnings, which works great because Doctor Who is meant to be kid-accessible. With the running theme so far of "look closer", that basic rule idea continues.

-Everybody lives!! In both episodes, there was not a single scene where we saw someone die or get killed. Yes, there were previous people "fed" to the ship in this week's episode, but on the episode itself, no one died because of the monsters or the Doctor's actions. God, I love Moffat!

-Still a little iffy about having Dalek's and Cybermen back, but I'm okay with them being in a one or two-part episode rather than the finale. Again. I get the feeling they won't be. In fact, notice the common backround theme of "Magpie Electricals"? http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Magpie_Electricals I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a return of The Wire from "The Idiot's Lantern". It might be the one hinted at with the cracks in time and such.

So yeah, I'm totally geeking out for this new season/series, so far. Damn great stuff right out of the gate that's filled me with nothing but confidence for the rest.
