Still can't get steam installed. I had installed it in the past without any problems, now it just updates forever and never starts.
So, it's Steam that's trying to update and never finishes? Try deleting c:\program files\steam\ClientRegistry.blob

Yeah, already been there. I've even done a full steam reinstall. Twice.
Damn, that really sucks. Have you tried turning off your anti-virus while it's updating?[/QUOTE]

Yup. Seems there are two scenarios. If I rename clientregistry.blob (to clientregistry.blob.bak) and let steam recreate it, it will get into an error where the update will progress to 26%, reset to zero, and repeat. It'll do this three times before finally saying that steam is temporarily unavailable. If I restore the original clientregistry.blob, it has the previous problem, of updating to 100%, reverting back to 28%, and repeating to infinity.

Looks like the mod community delivered again with a fix for those framerate issues with a simple dll file. Upon placing this file, I play 2 hours of the most enjoyable game before the game crashed while bartering with a genuine error message. I didn't mind, it went 90 minutes longer than the previous record.

And of course the steam save bug just killed the last 30 minutes of it.

Word to the wise, do NOT use quicksaves, make regular full saves.

That is weird. How about running Steam as administrator?

How much work did you do with your uninstalls? Did you manually clean your registry afterwards?

It was obvious enough from Fallout 3's initial 6 months. Personally I will play the game once it's gotten a stability patch or two. Complete it. Shelf it for another 3 months and then bring it back when the mod community is in full swing. Then I'll fully enjoy the game.

These sound like the problems I had playing Fallout. Shit would crash to desktop every 2 minutes just about, so I quicksaved like every 5 steps.

No fucking way to play a game, so I eventually quit.

Unfortunately until the majority of sales no longer happen in the first week after the game came out and instead happen after the game is bug free enough to be playable with zero frustration that's how it will always be...

I had a few issues with Fallout 3 (being stuck in a zone and always crashing the second I exited the zone), but eventually they got solved. Bethesda is not known for their bug free engines and now a Bethesda engine is coupled with "what's testing good for anyway" Obsidian. Pretty much a recipe for disaster.

I'll buy it when my next paycheck comes, then await the 2-3 official patches that will make the game playable. After that all support will be ditched faster then you can blink your eyes and once again, the modding community will pick up the slack and make it into a relatively bug free great game over the course of a year. Worth the money, but only because there's such a great modding community.

Well, they released a patch today. Supposed to help with some scripting and quest issues, not sure how well it works at large yet.

Ironically, it made my copy less stable.

I actually was finally able to install last night, and play about thirty minutes before bed. Ran into the same stability bugs as everyone else.

The really bad part is that when the game works, it's a hell of a lot of fun. It's frustrating to see a good game buried under these technical issues.

New patch out...

- Previously, my crash to desktops were random. I could play perhaps anywhere to 10 minutes to 45 minutes before the game closed without any feedback. Now, in the last hour, I've been unable to get past 5 minutes.
- The saves do seem to be stable now (they disabled cloud sync), my saves have remained there in peace.
- VATS is now completely and utterly broken. Firstly, it lags HORRIBLY (where it didn't do it before) and I cannot get any % of hit success. Including a shotgun, point blank to someone's face. Here's a printscreen :

Are these insane bugs specific to the PC version? I haven't heard any complaints of bugs this severe from anyone playing on PS3 or 360.

Can't afford it anyway, just curious.

Hate to be "that" guy, but I've just played 3 hours with nary a glitch or hiccup of any sort. NOW, here's the kicker. I pirated it. I'm waiting for my Collector's Edition to get here from the normal world you guys call civilization and I couldn't wait. As with most of my games, it is PC. I have a feeling a lot of the issues are Steam related.

I'd just like to note that the spinning head bug, the saves bug, the laggy VATS and wonky hit percentages bug, and crashes to desktop existed in Fallout 3 too, although probably not with the frequency that they're appearing in NV.

I'm gonna wait a few months before getting NV, possibly until after the inevitable GOTY edition is released.

I played for two hours last night on the PC... no crashes to desktop, no save game glitches, and VATS worked flawlessly. The only real problem I've seen now is a few graphical glitches and that weird NPC stutter thing.

It was very enjoyable! :)

I managed to play abiut 4 hours undisturbed last night. No bugs, no lag, no nothing. It was a lot of fun.

I'm hoping tonight I get the same experience and I'm apprehensive about it.

Finished the main quest today. Overall, quite the satisfying game. Didn't do as many sidequests as usual, simply because the main story was so intriguing.

Basically, if you can handle the occasional crash and you have a stable build, get it. Can't speak for the PS3 and the 360 versions, though.

So, just picked up Boone in Novac. Is he always an unstoppable engine of pure destruction or does it just seem that way early on?

Man, I logged about 12 hours on this game over the weekend and didn't have any crashes to desktop... things are running welll (still some slight graphical and clipping issues but nothing that really detracts from the game).

Frankie, Boone is pretty kick ass... I didn't use him much but he just made a mess of most people/creatures I encountered. Actually... both of the party members I've found are basically way more effective than I am lol. I do imagine later in the game they will have their over the top effectiveness curtailed a bit.

Oh November 1, can you not come sooner?!?

I'll be hitting New Vegas on payday, baby!

After downloading it, of course.

And patching it.

On Hardcore mode, they get a lot less badass due to the actually dying. That, combined with the whole AI thinking it can outshoot a Deathclaw with a sniper rifle from 2 feet away thing... Yeah.

They got Deathclaws right this game. In 3, they were tough, but not the monstrosities from 1 and 2. This one? My strategy consists of "drop a frag mine and run my ass off, hoping it cripples their legs so they don't bitchslap me through a mountain." God help you if you get attacked by 2 or 3 of them.
