What makes that image work is that Patrick's mouth seems to be covered with lipstick and SpongeBob seems to be taking off his pants.
Yeah - not malware in the usual sense I guess. Program called Coupon Companion was responsible. Removable through the Add/Remove Programs utility, not via malware/spyware utilities.

I'm a little impressed they'd even bother attempting to simulate the physical force of launching a mortar (even if they got it completely wrong) - most games I think just spawn the shell at the end of the barrel with the inherent heading and speed already assigned like magic and just play a sound effect and maybe the smoke puff.
