Turns out that the most economical and commonly used long-term storage these days is...drum roll please...magnetic tape! Yes, LTO storage, based on that "70yr-old technology" and introduced 25 years ago, is the most common and most economical storage method, holding between 18-40TB per 4in(10cm) cartridge, and can last 25-50 years when stored properly. Oh, and you can buy the cartridges for about US$100ea.
Oh, look! Someone did an entire article on the whole "ancient magnetic tape" thing.
In brief, tape storage remains in favor for multiple reasons, but most importantly due to the format’s huge capacity, long-term development roadmap that continues to evolve, known durability (30 years estimated), low energy consumption, TCO, and suitability for cold storage.

It would be very interesting to know what storage system and media have been selected to replace the GSA’s tape system, but we don't have these details to hand.
Yes, I am also interested in knowing these details. At this point I would hardly be surprised to find out that DOGE has implemented digital storage via JPGs.

With this bunch I'm pretty sure the answer is "whatever storage medium one of us was selling and can therefore get rich off of"

Alternatively, they just put it all "in the cloud" because that's basically magically infinite right?
