Since the idea of setting up a community server such as the one setup by Dave for TF2 last month.. I've been seriously contemplating the thought of perhaps trying out an idea of mine.

So, there's this FREE multiplayer game with classes much like TF2 but based on "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" (WW2) that was released a few years back in 2005. It boasts a built-in XP gaining mechanism that rewards players as they play (either by kills, completing objectives, support tasks) with neat perks which gets reset at the end of the campaign to be started anew. The game is very easy to learn and the class balance is excellent.

I think we should try it out and I'll spearhead this operation, at least at the beginning.

I've setup an easy to follow installation guide with all the files necessary to properly install and patch the game. I also took the liberty to upload it to Gamefront and it's ready to download.

Obviously being a game that is several years old, this means a lot of posters with older gaming rigs should actually be able to join us during our friendly game nights.

Of course, the game nights will not occur on the same nights that the TF2 server will host its events andI think we can easily start with one weekly game night (which one is still to be determined as I need to perform tests and see how interested people can be).

For the short term, the server will also be hosted locally off my secondary rig and my broadband internet access should be able to allow 12-14 players to connect and play without any problems... if not more. If the idea proves popular, we may procure a game server for our needs.

So, how many of you would be interested in trying this out? Many of us will be n00bs to the game and I'm more than happy to assist you in your learning process.

I'll also require some help in setting up the server (making sure my firewall allows connections, testing it out... etc)

Nice to read :

A gameplay video (mind you it's from a very good player but you can see what it plays like... I also suggest lowering or even muting the music)

I think we can handle this. I know how big you are on the game. Just set up an Event and I'll approve it.

Oh I loved this game back in the day... so much fun, though I think we'll need plenty of people. 12-16 is definitely the sweet spot.

For the un-initiated, here's a breakdown of how the game plays. First, the classes.

Soldier: Your basic run and gun fighter. Can use heavy weapons (MG42, Flamethrower, Panzerfaust, Mortar) to fight off the enemy. MG42 is an accurate machine gun if you go prone and deploy it, Flamethrower is self explanatory, Mortar fires indirect explosives a long way but uses energy, Panzerfaust shots rockets that use energy. Leveling up gives you more ammo, faster recharge of energy, higher speed, and an additional MP40/Thompson.

Medic: Self explanatory. Medics can toss med kits out, revive dead players, and regen their own health. Leveling lets them do it much better and use adrenaline on themselves. Uses MP40/Thompson as primary weapon.

Covert-Ops: Spies with lots of tricks. Have unique weapons (Sten, FG42, Sniper Rifle), silencers, and can drop satchel bombs to blow up some stuff. They can also steal enemy uniforms, drop smoke grenades, and detect landmines with their binoculars. Sten is a silence SMG but can overheat, while the FG42 is a fast firing, inaccurate gun when fired from the hip, but is a decent rifle when the scope is used. Leveling up lets them backstab, have more ammo, aim better while sniping and use bombs/smoke more often.

Field OPs: Commanders of the battle. Can drop ammo for allies, drop smoke to trigger a powerful airstrike, or use their binoculars to call an inaccurate artillery strike. Uses MP40/Thompson. Leveling lets them use their abilities more effectively and detect disguised enemies.

Engineer: The most important class. Engineers can build stuff to complete the mission, blow up enemy constructions and walls with dynamite, defuse dynamite, and place and remove landmines. The can use ether an MP40/Thompson or a rifle that does better damage and can fire off rifle grenades. Leveling up gives you more grenades and rifle grenades, a flak jacket, and the ability to do their job better.

The general idea behind each level is that your ether attacking or defending a location. If your attacking, you need to complete objectives to advance your assualt (like repairing a bridge, escorting a tank, stealing gold) until you finally complete the job. If your defending, all you need to do is hold off the attackers for a set period of time.

Along the way on each map, you can capture spawn points and construct radio spawns to make the assault easier. You get XP for kills and using the tools of your job.

I think that's all you really need to know.

Thanks for the details. As far as people, ya, about a dozen will do. It's a good game, had a lot of fun with it back in the day... then WoW took over my life. :(

The game is free, old and easy to run on older rigs. It's also a lot of fun.

As far as the events go, it's a question of how many people would be interested in playing this... maybe for next Friday? Should give people ample time to download and setup the game and on my end, I'll test out the server settings. I will need at least 1 person to help me out. (aka connect to my server with me and test out the settings)

Playing it now, most of the servers are heavily modded and ether full of suped up bots or no one. It's an entirely different game. I hope we play vanilla or only slightly modded.

Yep.

I guarantee you it shall be vanilla as fuck for a long long time. I'm not complicating anyone's life. Since the server won't be constantly up and only set to play solely for game nights there won't be bot support.

Anyways, I'd like to setup a testing session (see how the server runs, if my firewall allows outside connection, settings) sometime soon, possibly on Monday night. Is anyone available to help me test? Maybe we can have our first game session next Friday night around 8 PM Eastern (5 PM Pacific) or slightly later if needed.

I saw 1 person downloaded the package... WOOT. How did it work out for you?

I was the one who downloaded it. The only tricky bit is the Punkbuster stuff: You need to input the command line manually or the program gets wonky and won't let you advance. Otherwise it's fine.

etkey.org. Download the installer, will do it all for you. I had a long post that had a walkthrough for peeps, but the internet apparently gobbled it up.

Soliloquy

Holy crap, I remember this game. This is the game I hid in an obscure folder on the family computer and played whenever my hyper-conservative no-violence-in-games-allowed parents went out of the house. I LOVED this game.

Count me in. A thousand times yes.

Will do when I get home. It shouldn't take too long.

You're on my Steam right? You got Vent?

Thanks Adammon for testing it out. Things went very well. Server is stable and we played a 1 on 1 campaign. I gotta kick off this rust!

How does Sunday look like for you people....?

Even those who never played this, trust me, it's a lot of fun and I promise a quick tutorial to help you learn or relearn.

Still up in the air, I don't want to make it too late or too early. Feedback of people who can attend will be appreciated.

How does 7 PM Eastern sound? (That's 4 Pacific, 5 Mountain and 6 Central I believe)

My goal is to get at the very least an hour of gaming with cool people from the forums and at least 8 players or so (though less is possible)

I've never played this before. To be honest...I'm not really interested. I think it's largely because I like the aesthetic of TF2 and the varied classes.
