In a city in Japan without a name, there's a school that caters to the fairly well-to-do middle class. It's a fairly liberal school with permissive ideas about things like affording students free time to socialize and wander around between activities, as well as a tendency for the faculty to be a bit absent or uninterested in policing the student body.

This is the story of Halforums Academy, Year 1, Class 1. Each day will be told from the point of view of a different student. In honor of the creator of the concept of the Halforums House, the first day of school shall be seen through the eyes of Gusto. Day 1: Gusto
Gusto heads off to school. Pretty much anyone going to or from the school passes by the river here. The statue has a keen eye and knows more than its silent, stony lips will tell.
Arriving outside the school, he meets someone.
Her name is MindDetective. But she doesn't seem very interested in socializing with Gusto.
Heading inside, he sees a large fellow gaily chatting up a tall redhead. Keen to meet his new classmates, he introduces himself to the boy when the girl leaves. His name is Cheesy One.
Then it's off to the locker room to get ready for the start of class. It's a little crowded as the students rush about.
In the classroom, Gusto meets Dei Skates:
And Bhamv Three.
The bell rings. Gusto is an attentive student, and performs well in the morning classes. The lunch bell rings, and as they get up, the dark haired fellow next to him makes a comment. "All these girls..." says Jay Sirius, "... you can't help but feel it well up in you.. when they even brush against you casually!"
Gusto calls out to the whole class, and suggests, in the interest of all getting to know each other, they should all go eat lunch together! But they're an introverted lot for the most part, and only Bones and Ravenpoe go with him to the roof to eat, and I forget my camera. But it isn't much longer before they start coming up there in ones and twos. The roof is the place to be, for eating lunch, after all.
Jay sees Gusto among the rabble and gives him the "I was right, right? Eh? EH?"
Jay's not interested in talking about much other than sex and girls.
While there, Gusto also meets Lana Karron. They exchange pleasantries.
Feeling the call of nature after lunch, Gusto heads for the restrooms... and bumps into Frank "the Tank." Frank barely grunts monosyllables to him. Gusto can't figure out if Frank just doesn't like him, or just doesn't communicate much.
On the way back from the bathroom, Gusto meets Ashburner X,
and Klew DuckPirate. They're a little on the shy side, but nice enough.
Back on the roof, he finds most everybody else has wandered off having finished eating, but he meets one girl there, her name is Shakey, "The Well Known." What an odd moniker.
Coming back down from the roof, Gusto notices Cheesy talking to that same tall redhead again. What's that guy's secret?! When she leaves, Gusto asks him if there's something going on between the two of them... but Cheesy gets embarrased and clams up.
Gusto decides to try it from the other angle, and follows the redhead back up to the roof. There, he meets Eve Steinman,
Justine Me,
And the redhead herself, named Dirona, who introduces herself as "the Team Cleric." Gusto isn't sure what to make of that, and writes it off as "MOON PEOPLE" stuff. She also isn't saying what's between her and Cheesy, if anything.
The bell for afternoon classes rings. Gusto finds it hard to concentrate, with having met all these new people. When classes adjourn for the day, he checks the roster and finds the only other person in the Baseball club besides him is the blonde he ran into first - MindDetective.
He confidently walks up to her, explains what he's discovered, and cheerfully says they should go practice together!
She's skeptical.
But, he talks her around eventually. The only two Baseball club members can't exactly ignore each other, can they? So off to the ballfield they go.
Having someone to practice with inspires Gusto to higher feats of athleticism. He thinks he's doing pretty well! Then he notices someone watching from the stands. It's Frank.
Frank tells him, "I think you'd be better off sticking to studying." Gusto is crestfallen.
Before heading home, Gusto goes up to the roof one more time to look around. There he meets Little Kagsin.
And in the hallway coming back down, he meets Tin Whistler.
This is about all the new people he can take for one day, so he heads home.
