I have never been to this subforum and didn't realize this was a thing, so AMA.

Pretty well, actually! The surgeries went well, the lasers went pew pew, and the mice brains were definitively zapped with lasers. I now have several mouse brains sitting in jars (and I know this is going to be quoted against me some point in the future) that are awaiting being sectioned to do further nifty techniques on them, like fluorescent immunochemistry: http://www.neuroscience.cam.ac.uk/uploadedFiles/pcb10_phppYaWHE.jpg

So - would YOU drink the water?
That depends on what water you're referring to. If you're referring to the lead-tacular water in Flint, Michigan...hell no. Thankfully I have beer so I don't have to worry about water for a while.

We are about to advertise a health psych position. Your physio background would be a plus. Care to apply? (Southern Oregon)
I'd definitely be interested in taking a look at the position. And I sincerely apologize for missing your post after my initial rant in the rant thread. Thanks for the opportunity!

What's your favorite part about thesis writing?

My guess is formatting.

Have you been hooded yet?
Nope, my "favorite" part was the intro. "Hey, remember all that stuff you learned as a first year that everyone in your field takes as gospel? Now you need to exhaustively read everything about it and cite it."

My into was 43 pages long, single spaced.

As for hooding, not yet. Considering how many students Michigan has, and both me and my mentor's lack of interest in the process, we came up with an agreement. I'll buy the wizard robes, he'll hood me, and all this will take place at a local bar so we can start drinking away the last year of grad school. :p

I need to wait for one more of my committee members to confirm, but this should be taking place on March 8th. :)

You ever go to eat a pork sausage, and find it's got hairs growin' all over it?
Nope! I did, however, go to drink a bunch of grape juice and found out it had mold growing all over it. Unfortunately, this was after I'd drank about three gulps.

And I must be out of the loop since I've seen you ask that a few times: personal experience, or line from a comedy?

Just something my Cousin Earl asked me once. The look he gave me when he asked chills me to this day.

If you could get your job anywhere, where would you prefer to live on this little blue marble?

Coke or Pepsi?

Jennifer Anniston or Angelina Jolie?

Cats or dogs?

Are you pro-spicy food?

Favourite video game?

What sort of brain surgery do you research/want to work in?

Ideally, anywhere in the Pacific northwest. I grew up on the west coast and got to spend a lot of time in Oregon and Washington and think it's honestly some of the most beautiful country in the world (particularly the Columbia River Gorge).

For regular pop: Coke. For diet/zero calorie versions: Pepsi Max.

Gonna have to go with Jennifer Aniston.

My gut reaction is still dogs, but--considering we have four cats and zero dogs--I'm going to have to say that I'm empirically a cat person.

Very much pro on the spicy food! Nothing beats out good szechuan food, and I've recently taken to roasting hot peppers in the oven, charring the skin, and integrating them into stir fry and meat dishes.

While it's hard to nail down, I'd say my favorite video game is either RBI Baseball for the NES or Dark Souls. RBI Baseball because I grew up playing that game with my dad (and it remains as the only game we're both equal in) and Dark Souls because, in addition to being an awesome game, a friend of mine and I play them together and it reminds me of when I was in elementary school: swapping tips, secrets, cool things we've found when exploring, etc.

I don't research brain surgery (though I have performed brain extractions before). My research focuses on the genetics of psychiatric illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. I'm trying to expand our knowledge of the biological "nuts and bolts" of these illnesses to try and identify new therapies. :)

Does that mean that you research the effects of certain medications for those conditions on the brain?
Indirectly, yes!

In a nutshell, our brain (and pretty much all of our body) is a massive collection of chemical reactions. These reactions are controlled largely by your genes and, at least for psychiatric illness, medications can actually influence how much of certain genes are made. Psychiatric diseases represent abnormalities in brain chemistry, but we're still not entirely sure what the underlying causes are. My research centers around identifying more of these underlying causes, which will tell us more about changes in brain chemistry, which will (hopefully!) let us 1) figure out what type(s) of new drugs we should design and 2) how current drugs work.

I'm actually publishing a paper soon on just this type of thing, where I looked at how long-term stress (something that is very associated with mental illness) changes genetic networks in the brain. I'm very excited about it!

I sure hope you consider applying for our Health psych position. You might need to revamp you application materials a bit for the right spin but you've got some of what we are looking for.

What is your favorite type of dog breed?
I will have to say it's a tie between rottweiler and pit bull. A family friend had a couple wonderful and sweet rottweilers that I grew up with and I've always loved the big lugs. And my wife and I have fostered a pit bull and just love them to pieces.

Have you ever had a dream nightmare where your pecker has fallen off and you're desperately trying to hold it in place in the manic hope that it will magically fuse back into place?
Thank fucking christ no. I have had dreams, however, where my teeth were breaking/falling out and I was trying to put them back in. Apparently that's a really common dream to have...not sure about the penis nightmare!
