Ok, So a few of us like to, apart from perusing this awesome new forum, hang out in an IRC room. Lots of regulars, it can be a pretty fun place.

Now, the place is called #pvponline , but worry not.. it has NOTHING to do with Scott Kurtz or his webcomic in anyway, it was just the name it had when it was created and when a community grew around it, we can't really up and leave.

The wonderful Yalborap is the main mod there, and he has made some nice scripts that keep us annoyance-free.

The easiest way to join us is to download an IRC client and head on over to SlashNET.org and then joining the #pvponline channel.

But if you're at work or want to just drop by, an even easier way is to point your browser over to www.mibbit.com and then selecting SlashNET from the drop down menu, then enter your desired nick name and then #pvponline in the channel list.

We'll help you out from there if you want to use a client.

We'll also post the occasional excerpts from the chat in this thread. We can be pretty hilarious.

There is also an Official #Halforums channel, but most people haven't migrated there so it's not as busy. Remember that the #pvponline and Halforums.com are separate entities and the same rules do not necessarily apply.

Mibbit sucks. It lets people connect through the same IP address, which the server doesn't like. (cloning).
If too many people use it, it'll refuse your connection. If more keep using it, it'll result in a temp ban.
It is automated from the IRC server, I cant prevent that. It's to stop spambots 'n stuff.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but I was around long before #pvponline was even really made, back when it was just Ame (as DMET), Aba, Yal, Kiki and myself all idling in siblings and #pvponline. We had tried advertising on Image but rarely anyone ever joined and it wasn't even until we became Halforum that we got the huge influx of users. Even the year I was gone last year, when it was all Halfpixel, there weren't nearly as many people as we have now on a daily basis. (prior to christmas time, we're getting like 20+ people a night, sometimes 30). (this is based on the couple dozen times i had access to a PC for that year and got in IRC and only saw 7 or 8 people at prime time US EST).

So yea..I shouldn't be the one to leave, seniority at all. I made my peace with Zen, Amy, etc if they can't accept a handshake and a "let bygones be bygones" thing, thats on them, not me. I'm kosher with everyone as far as I'm concerned. Got an issue with me? Send me a PM, I mighta said something stupid but if I'm called out on it I always listen.

I don't know if anyone's even in it right now but I tried to do the IRC thing (for the first time, please be gentle). I downloaded chatzilla and tried to log on, but it said "(Your GECOS (real name) is banned from this server)"

I saw someone else had the same problem and someone else responded to change the name from chatzilla... which I think I did, unless there is another place I have to do that. Still, it's not letting me in, for the same reason.

afaik, mibbit can accept irc commands, at least those most clients use.

try this, pick one of the specific servers Ame mentioned and in the console/chat box area of mibbit type

/server irc.serverhere.domainhere it should auto connect on whatever available port there is (usually something like 6XXX), or just do what I do and let it connect to irc.slashnet.org directly, a server will be selected for you (least, this works fine in mirc and a lot of other irc related clients)

The problem with mibbit is that it will let users connect through the same (mibbit) IP address as others mibbit users. This is viewed as 'cloning' on the IRC server, and only like a maximum of 5 are allowed on the entire server.

I'm not sure why mibbit is suddenly so popular when it is like the dumbest way ever to connect to an IRC server. Especially with so many better alternatives around.

If you're a FireFox user, try Chatzilla. Windows; try mIRC. If all else fails, use the java client on the slashnet website. Though through some twisted form of irony that last link will fail as slashnet.org is having DNS issues.

Otherwise.. Google is your friend.

And apparently, that caused some kind of ruckus for the stats page...or...something? Eyes or whoever they are on here banned and ignored me when all I wanted was an explanation. Moss explained it to me...kind of...but I have no clue about programming or coding or whatever the hell it is that this fucked up.

Now, I'm apparently banned because I was asking for an explanation about why it was such a big deal. I still don't but screw it. I'm a moron when it comes to computers, especially coding or programming or editing logs or whatever. I don't understand why this whole shebang needs to be edited or why it screws up the statistics of the chat so much or why it's important in the first place.

Anyway, I'm apologizing for the drama and stress that I caused because, as I said, I'm a fucking moron. All I wanted was an explanation, something along the dumbed down lines of "Speedy things goes in, speedy things comes out".

He apparently was repeatedly asking why the nick changing was such a bad thing, as far as I can read further in my logs it was explained already at some point, but I assume he either didn't get it or didn't see it.

Everyone has a nickname, which is caught in the logs. Everything this nickname types is being logged and linked to this nickname for the IRC stats page. Changing nicks around messes this up obviously: everyones nickname got linked to other peoples nickname, making them the same person.

It's the same kind of thing when I first moved to Toronto and was treated like shit by bus drivers or token booth guys because I had no idea either how to get around the city or how various things about public transit worked (being from a small town and not understanding it). Same thing. All I wanted was an explanation and I was shot down and treated like a piece of shit.

I think that explains it very well. The two who posted before, who were not there, did not really get a good picture of what was going on. And while ThatNickGuy might have felt that he was simply asking questions the problem was the attitude that was coming through to the rest of us. It seemed hostile and as I said before, intentionally obnoxious. Maybe he didn't mean it that way, but he should have taken people's reactions as a sign that he should either shut up or change tactics. In a text only format there is no way to gauge tone of voice or facial expression and sometimes that causes problems.

But it seems that things are getting resolved and that is good.

Just remember that Ame is the Goddess of Irc... do not question her.

It would've been permanent, but I got an automated Ban Protection script so even when I'm not actually in the channel as owner I can still remove my ban. So I banned Skynet, removed my ban and tinkered with Skynet some more so it SHOULDN'T happen again... Shouldn't... I swear this thing has a mind of its own though...

All you need to do is type
/nickserv REGISTER password email
click the link in email to authorize, then just add
/nickserv IDENTIFY password
to your client of choice's 'auto-perform on connect' feature or type it by hand.
You can also create a 2 letter alias if even that is too much work.

I tried doing this but it still said I didn't have voice when I tried to type something. Do I need to wait for like, admin authorization or something? I don't regularly use IRC channels so I'm not well versed in it's code/regulations/dark rituals. I may have done something wrong along the way and not be aware of it.

So, I finally got a new phone (motorola Droid) and I'm trying to figure out a way to run IRC on it.

I'm using the android app "AndroidIRC" and it connects to other irc servers just fine. But it can't seem to connect to irc.slashnet.org:6667, no matter what I do.

Does slashnet reject certain clients, like mobile devices? What could be causing this?

still no good. Here are the fields I have to work with, maybe there's something missing in here somewhere.

name: clients I've used before have only asked for a nick, so I just used ravenpoe in this and the previous field

channels: #pvponline
and a field for scripts to run when connection, which I only have set currently to msg nickserv to verify my nick, though I've also tried it with this blank.

I don't think it's a port problem, since I've used port 6667 to connect to other irc servers, but this one just won't seem to work.

It's running Android 2.0, google's mobile operating system. I tried two apps, both a free IRC client and the official android pay IRC client. Both could connect to -other- IRC servers, just not slashnet.

I'll try a few other free ones, see if I get lucky.

Edit: Actually, the only other server I tried was freenode, which those threads state as being the only one working. Hopefully this gets solved soon.
