Is Destiny as cool as the commercials make it look?

Alright, so we're both Charlies in the end.

Then instead of whining about NO PC WEH WEH, why not look into reviews and see if the game is even worth wanting? PC gamers bitch about not getting games that consoles do, but are the games worth worrying about to begin with?
This is not true... like at all.

Meh. I have no real dog in the fight.

On topic, I think I'll skip it for now at least. Oh well. Maybe I'll pick up borderlands 2 instead.

There are plenty of other serviceable post-apocalyptic zombie games on PC, anyway.
That's kind of a weak statement though. Which ones, the top-down tower defense? The survival type games that are all the rage now? Left 4 Dead? These are all different kinds of games from each other, and from The Last of Us.

I'm not one of the people who adored The Last of Us, but if you're going to cut it that simply, there's plenty of any kind of game on anything. No one should feel they're missing out on Destiny because there are plenty of MMOs. No one should care that GTA5 wasn't on PC, because other sandbox games already were. None of it should matter if there's alternatives?

Getting pissed because one console or another or PC has an exclusive is beyond stupid. The point I was making earlier is that I've never seen significant backlash because game A wasn't available across all platforms.

Getting pissed is stupid, sure, but it's not like one game can't be unique from another, and it's understandable if someone wishes they could play an exclusive game, but can't be buying every console or a strong enough PC.

This all started from this exact quote from CynacismKills: PC gamers bitch about not getting games that consoles do

I was refuting that point, because I haven't heard said bitching.

Most of the bitching I've recalled seeing was more "We're not getting that game YET" than anything else. Most games do eventually wind up on PC, except it seems Sports games. Or maybe I just don't pay attention to those...

Actually, do many Japanese-developed titles eventually get to PC? It seems like they wouldn't.

It did happen with The Last of Us. "Bitching" may be putting it strongly, but there was certainly befuddlement a while before The Last of Us released. I think a lot of people (myself included) just assumed it was going to get a PC port; it seemed like that kind of game for some reason. I was surprised to find out it was PS3 exclusive, meaning only that, no PC, nothing Microsoft could've touched.

Well, it was developed by naughty dog, which means everyone should already know it's a ps3 exclusive. That's be like expecting a new God of War game to get a PC release.

I hate to defend Arthur Gies (the guy that said Diablo 3 was above criticism) but a stopped clock is right twice a day. This is him getting reamed by Hiphopgamer (a youtuber I think) about his 6/10 review of Destiny.

It's been a long time since I bothered reading a "critical" game review. When I want to know about a game now, I go on youtube and look for gameplay videos. If people are playing it and it looks fun and awesome, I'll be more interested in it. If it looks annoying, really twitchy, or extremely demanding of qualities I don't have, I lose interest.

One of the problems with critics in general is that it's hard to trust that they're giving an honest opinion instead of crafting an image - ie the whole hipster mindset: "Yeah, I'm sure a lot of casuals or people who don't know any better like it, but it just doesn't meet MY standards. I demand more of a game than regular people." etc. Then there's the question of what a critical number score even means. What's the difference between a 7.8 and a 9.1? Between a 6.0 and a 7.8? Is it some sort of exponent of quantified fun? Is it an expression of technical achievement, regardless of subjective fun? And then there's the critics who basically miss the fucking point: people who criticize sandbox games for not being linear, people who criticize JRPGs for being anime-flavored and grindy, people who criticize retro side-scrolling beat'em ups for having an excuse plot.

A reviewer who explains their subjective experience is a lot more valuable to me than someone who gives a brief summary of what they didn't like and a number. I have no idea if Gran Turismo 6 is a 6.5 or 7.4 or 8.8 - I do know that it's a visually stunning game with a humongous variety of vehicles to experience, with a few flaws that are noticeable even if most of the time they don't ruin the experience (with one major exception). The car roster, for instance, has almost 1200 cars - but when you look, there's almost 20 varieties of Mazda RX-7, half a dozen Toyota Vitz's, at least 4 different versions of the fucking Prius, and yet some glaring omissions: the Pontiac GTO is a 64 Le Mans Tempest or the 5.7 2004 GTO that was a rebadged Holden Monaro, not the 69 Judge (which would be the one to have); none of the cool British Fords like the Escort or Sierra Cosworth or Capri; no Hennessey hypercars... And the programmer who decided to include Kart racing instead of drag racing should be fed alive to a pool of lampreys.

I just watch a quick look of the PS3 version and it actually loads faster and plays the same as the next gen versions. Obviously a good chunk of the more advanced effects are gone and there's a bit more aliasing, but the gameplay remains unchanged. So, I could get this if I wanted to. I prefer to watch quick looks to reading reviews. When I can actually see what the game is like, I can make my own decisions.

So, all things considered, this game is going to get a big old pass from me.

That right there may be one of the better reviews of GT6 I've ever heard.[DOUBLEPOST=1410708202,1410707924][/DOUBLEPOST]That all said, I'm enjoying Destiny a lot right now. It's definitely not a "10 year IP" or whatever the shit Activision tried to claim when they announced it, but it's a decent little MMO-style shooter that is less grindy than Firefall, looks pretty decent, and I have a good time playing with friends. We'll see how I feel when I get to level 20 and the endgame grind (such as it is) really begins, but I've enjoyed the 4-ish hours I played so far a great deal.

I enjoyed what I played of it, only made it to level 8 in a half a day. I liked that there was no difficulty setting, and that the game's "levels" ramp up enemy AI to coincide with your difficulty, but you can still go back to previous levels to search, play, and grind if you like. I was never a big fan of deathmatch, have only a couple of online friends, and never use voice communication, so the automatic co-op in parts of levels and missions is welcome. It wasn't as RPG as I thought, but then I didn't follow along with all the internet articles written about it, since I figured I wouldn't be buying it (having no next-gen console, nor a 1080p hdtv). I would rent it again, but no plans to buy.

I've basically heard that it's boring and grindy, but has great controls and is really pretty.
In the RT Let's Play of Destiny I posted, Ray, Geoff, and Michael were discussing it in comparison to Diablo 3 and Borderlands, and basically agreed that "completing the game is just the start of the game" - ie you keep playing through at higher challenge levels, acquire better loot, change up your skills to better suit your play-style or for self-imposed challenge, etc.

If it were a single player game, it would be too short and kind of insulting for what you get. But it's an MMORPG - grinding to build up your character is kind of the point of the game.

Yes, but that grinding itself has to be fun, and that's not what I've been hearing anecdotally by people who bought the game. They've said that it's repetitive. Opinions may change as they get further in the game, but that's what I've heard so far. I'll wait on that to see if I'll ever get the game or not. Good thing about waiting on a PC version is that there will be a definite comprehensive overview of what to expect by then.

Apparently they're doing a patch that fixes the Cryptarch in Destiny- now epigrams that are unlocked will be their level or higher, so no more purple epigrams turning into rares instead of legendaries, starting next week. But don't hoard the ones you've got - purples collected before the patch and unlocked after will be rares.

I don't have the game, but I found it really interesting how Michael, Gus, and Jack were talking about it on the RT Podcast - how basically for the first week or so you have to do a lot of grinding for gear, but once you have a good set, you can really enjoy the game. Michael also pointed out that apparently loot in the Crucible is random - he logged in to a match, got like one kill, then went and washed the dishes, and at the end of the match, was awarded like an exotic fusion rifle or something.

I picked up an exotic rocket launcher after ending up only in the middle of the pack during a control match. Dude at the bottom of the pile got a legendary engram. Their post-mission/match reward system seems rather random.

Not complainin' though. ;)

I was reading something earlier this week that said that the crucible rewards tend to be weighted toward the things you do the least. So, if you have a lot of kills with auto rifles,, but 0 kills with hand cannons, it will increase the probability of giving you hand cannons. If you don't play crucible much at all, it increases the rarity chances. That's why you see some schmuck who goes 1 & 25 getting the exotic weapon.

Anyways, I'm finally getting the chance to play this a lot & I like it. It's very... grindy though. Whole lotta faction grinding for gear seems like. The campaign is extremely short. I'm having fun, but there's a whole lotta things that make you scratch your head & wonder why the hell bungie did them in the first place.

The engrams situation is the first thing. There never should have been coding in the first place that allowed engrams to downgrade. Then, when they patch it, they fuck that up too because they make sure to specify it will only apply to engrams that drop post-patch. And OH BTW - if you're saving any purples for the patch - don't cause once the patch hits we're just gonna go ahead & downgrade them to blue anyways. THEN they have the balls to joke about it in their patch notes, saying "Let's be honest, it was probably gonna just be a blue anyways" Sounds to me like they've overthought the coding.

Then there's the other problem - you can only have 1 exotic weapon & 1 piece of exotic gear equipped at a time.

Oh! and...

And to prove the point, running the weekly nightfall heroic strike earlier this week I was rewarded with a lovely legendary hand cannon.

At that point I had 0 (zero) hand cannon kills...

Now that I've played a month, I think Destiny is the perfect game to play when you're not currently playing other games.

It's not super-compelling or deep so it won't get in the way of other games that show up at my door (both Shadow of Mordor and Borderlands are getting acquired some time in the next month or two), but the actual gameplay is just tuned well enough that if I feel like I need a palate cleanser in-between other things it will serve perfectly, and you can get stuff done in 20 min.
