My ticket is still pending re: the big black voids. In the meantime, if you run into one, just leave the area entirely for about 5 mins. When the server unloads that area from memory, then reloads it when you go back, that usually fixes that particular manifestation of the problem. Of course, it will probably happen somewhere else too, but this workaround should help until the problem can be tracked down.

OK, because it's 100% legit (and in-person it's kinda awesome) OK, but I'll admit I'm a bit "half-n-half" about it still. That's just my feelings on it. I don't want to offend anybody though either.
'Kinda' awesome? I'll have you know that it is nothing but 100% Grade A radassitude. I bid you good day, sir!

Having a bad night, sleepwise. Figured out some of how to use alternate generators. Figured out how to move the spawn to somewhere a little more convenient.

Your next visit to CreativeLand might be... interesting.

(Was there anything in CreativeLand anybody wanted besides the TNT library and the ridiculous schlong tower?)

Holy crap, it's now a featureless plane of stone and slimes!

I'm a little weirded out over here.

Did anybody experience any black voids in the world yesterday? The support guy is asking if it's still happening. If it is, he's thinking about moving us to a new machine, which would change our address/port and require a complete offsite backup on my part... so I want to make sure it's still happening before I tell him "yeah let's try that."

On the advisement of a multiplay representative, I've added the BananaChunk plugin to our server. If you find yourself stuck in a "lag hole" (IE an unloaded chunk), you should now be able to type /chunkme and the server should force re-send the current chunk to your client. If somebody comes across one of those black voids, do me a favor and try it on it please. For safety's sake, maybe magic carpet OVER it to do so, however.

Here's the bad news Fnord's been waiting for: I can't make the biospheres world generator work with bukkit. It's a modloader mod, unfortunately. For an alternative world generator to work with what we've got, I need a .jar, not a directory of .classes. There was one guy I found who was trying to port biospheres to bukkit/multiverse, but he gave up.

Ok. This took a few days to finish due to the sheer size of the file, but if anyone really, really wanted to see the full isometric Cartograph of Ragnar (ie, the Cartograph containing Jay's Walkabout), you can download the 85MB PNG of it here** from my DropBox.

Be warned that the final image is almost 40000 x 18000 pixels in size, which is a little over 2GB of actual image (according to the GIMP*). Don't come crying to me if it breaks your image viewer or crashes your computer before you save all your other docs. Also, I might recommend choosing the "Save link as..." option to download it locally lest you accidentally try to load the graphic in your browser (trying to open it actually hard locked one of the machines at work).

Here's a taste, at 1/20th the size of the original:

*The GIMP turned out to be my only option. My (older) version of Photoshop can "only" handle images up to 30000px in size. Go figure.

Caprica Central Transit for minecarts is now open with one destination: the Caprica Portal Hub. At the hub, climb the ladder next to the jail to use the mini-station to get to the main hub. Arrivals/departures for the main hub are on the 2nd floor, the traveler's lounge is on the 1st floor. Future routes to the eastern territories (Far, 2_bit, Dirona's resort) and western NPC town will be opening in the future. Donations of minecarts in to the provided chests are appreciated!

If you wish to add any routes, feel free to add in the template provided from the 2nd floor with appropriate boosters please. 4 powered rails in a row are enough to reach maximum speed, and 1 every 36 thereafter is enough to maintain velocity on a flat. And remember that mobs don't spawn on half-blocks, so if all you have exposed is minecart track, don't worry about lighting.

Decor credit for the 1st floor goes to Dirona. Thanks for your help hon.

This is 100% legit, and 100% vanilla minecart systems (no craftbook, etc) so it shouldn't "break" unless Notch drastically changes things. I pulled up a fair amount of the track from abandoned mine shafts, and mined the rest of the stuff. Though I made stone brick for the short "leg" I will probably be doing cobblestone from here on out.

If anybody wants to warp instead of riding the rails, they can use "c-centraltransit" to get there quickly.

Won't 2xpowered track as launcher be enough to get you going? It's enough to maintain full speed with boosters every 32 in my world, at least. I do know that Notch slightly changed the way boosters work after I built my rail, not 100% certain what the changes were.

See here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Powered_Rail#Optimal_Use

In there, it's actually three to get it going at maximum velocity. I'm being overly-paranoid and using 4. Because of buttons, maybe I should be using 3 just so that it doesn't "brake" it too soon in case of lag. I dunno though, as each additional track does add momentum, so it's not "wasted" either, but two is not maximum velocity either (at least not anymore).

Sweet, I miss rail systems. Maybe once my humble abode is finished I'll make a spur line.

If nobody has any objections, I plan to wipe and reset Adventureland with a new seed this weekend - probably saturday morning.

Also, last call for me to copy anything that was in the old CreativeLand before I delete it.

Also also, just a reminder that you can now fix missing chunks with /chunkme.

Oh sweet, enough things don't kill me on the ground, please, put them in the air!

Seriously, though, I look forward to putting my blade where the scales don't shine.

Ok, I've experimentally re-enabled the nether for Caprica. I don't know if for a fact it's working right now, but at least going to it didn't crash the server, and if I'm right about some settings, the 8 to 1 compression factor might also work. Please test.

Also, I've noticed some sluggishness in loading chunks after a warp/login... I can't find anything wrong that would be causing it, so I'm wondering if another minecraft server on our machine might be hogging resources or something. Or not. Who knows. Continue to fix "black voids" with /chunkme. I've noticed some higher than normal RAM useage too, which rebooting the server seems to fix... worried about what that might mean. Memory leak in one of the addons...?

I'll check it out (I know what the nether USED to look like for Caprica) and co-ordinates, etc. With the same seed, it should be identical, or at the least, work correctly.

I know two places far enough apart to generate their own portals too, which also helps this whole thing.

Edit: won't let me log in. I was on earlier today. Weird. There's "connection lost" and other types of errors (not 100% of the time the same error either).

The nether is a new map with a new seed, just so you know.

Yep, definitely a different map, but that's OK.

Anyways, my report: it works exactly as it should. The divide-by-8 co-ordinates were bang-on, and the two portals I used (gas's, and the one east of "dironasResort" near the npc town) worked exactly as expected. They were almost-exactly on their divide-by-8 co-ordinates in the nether. The eastern one was moved just slightly because of being over a lava pool otherwise, but only by less than 10 from where its "ideal" location would be (and it's on a bonanza of soul sand if anybody needs that for traps, etc). To triple-confirm, I traveled from one gate to the other completely in the nether, and came out in the correct spot on the other side. So they work exactly as expected. And as before, Dirona and I's gate connects to Gas's destination one-way. That's expected given proximity. I should be able to make a new gate in the nether that will connect "right" as well if I wish.

Our old constructs are gone on the new map (obviously). But I'm not re-creating our safe nether travel system until 1.9 hits, since that brings nether strongholds and such, which we want. But there's no detectable "bugs" with the nether as it stands right now from Caprica. I have not tested Ragnar or anywhere else.

WARNING:
I've partially protected the gates (only barely), but do NOT go in to the nether unless you have flint & steel with you because the ghast fireballs WILL disable the gates if they hit (they did multiple times while I was visiting). If the portal vanishes (the part you step in, not the obsidian, as that's invulnerable to Ghasts), light a fire on the inside of the obsidian and it'll come back quickly.
