Not quite epic, but hopefully becomes more than minor...definitely hope for a victory-
TL;DR version-got a stray cat that had been out in the rain in the bushes for 2+ days some attention it seemed to need...
Sunday night, walking the dog, she pulls me off towards a fenced off area near the apartment building. Thinking nothing much of it, as a beagle, she's always sniffing out something to explore. Monday morning, rainy, same thing. This time, I look closer to see eyes looking back at me. A cat. Full grown, not a kitten. Seemed healthy enough, not distressed. Called my wife mid-day, as the rain kept coming down, and asked her to check on it. Was still there, she couldn't see if it was moving/breathing, but couldn't get close enough. So, I get home around 6ish, bring it a dish of food as close to her as I could get. She moved, she blinked, she meowed....but that was all....Checked back 2 hours later, the dish had filled with rain water, but food looked untouched. Poured the water out. Meanwhile, had tried calling Animal control at 4:30 and then again at 6:30, both times no answer. Line said to please hold. Office hours until 8. At 7:55, the line had flipped to “office is now closed.” At 10:30 was too dark to see if she was still there (and I didn’t bring a flashlight because I’m dumb).
Checked again this morning. She had moved to underneath a different bush, food looked almost entirely un-eaten…maybe a bite or two gone. Called animal control at 7:50, 7:55….open at 8, called at 8:02, on hold for 5 minutes, and then A HUMAN!!! Told them the situation..the lady didn’t inspire confidence….they can really only pick up sick or injured…told her cat was outside for almost 3 days, in cold rain, potentially pregnant, looked fed, but defiantly had the potential to not be well….they only have one driver in each borough but they were going to try.
Got off the train, had a voice mail from 8:45..they were there and can I come down and show them the cat. Called back, talked them through about 10 minutes finding it. She found the cat, was going to try to get her in hopes she didn’t run away.
So, here’s to hoping for the best….
