Minor victory thread

A couple months back we had a thread that was basically "I'm bored of life, what should I do?" A couple suggestions came up and one of them was SCUBA diving. So, on the advice of Halforumites everywhere, I went out and took a bunch of lessons...Culminating in today I passed my final practical exam and am now a certified open water diver. Awoooooooooo. Thanks Halforum for the kick in the ass!

I'm from SC. That pepper stuff is exotic. "Pork" qualifies as a spice in my hometown, though, I believe.

I have a lovely recipe for baked grits, with cheese, jalapeno peppers, ground sausage, and an egg to thicken it up. Perfect for lazy Sunday brunch.

As someone who has lived in California most of my life, I've never seen (much less eaten) grits. Is it an acquired taste, or should I go out and make myself some to try?

I think it's tasty. The texture is... gritty, I guess. It's just hot cereal with little soft round bits in it. Very creamy and tasty, though. :) I think you should try.

It's not really an acquired taste. It's fairly plain. If you've eaten posole or polenta, you've eaten grits, just under a different name. Well if posole was ground up.

Grits are more like a canvas that you can paint using a large culinary brush. You can add nearly anything to grits and it'll be good.
Note that I said nearly anything. I wouldn't go with sweet foods, but most cheeses (especially sharp ones), meats, sauces, etc. work very well.
Give them a shot and let us know what you think.

Yeah, the stuff they call "grits" at Denny's is not grits at all but rather that textured substance people put on their ceilings.

As a fellow Californian who had never had grits before I went to Virginia, I can say that they're not bad. They're different, but not bad at all.

Probably familiarity, too. Let's be honest, to the uninitiated, oatmeal looks like vomit or undead zombie flesh (ask Sam Raimi).

Grits are the only kind of hot cereal I can eat and I can only eat them with eggs.

Otherwise they and all others make me sick just smelling them. Blech

Denny's grits... ridiculous. What you need to do is get a bag of stone-ground, make a good thick pot of em, and top them with fried veal cutlets and gravy. That's dad's favorite birthday breakfast.

Well, my 550 case backlog turned out to be closed to 330, though it was still a 2 year old backlog. That being said, we've so far closed out about 110 of those cases and some of them were closed when they got to us (just a record keeping transfer, more than anything else). This leaves me with only about 200 cases to go through and validate information for (my predecessor was sloppy) - and I'm now able to start clearing my own (2 month old) backlog. All of my supervisors are impressed, and my contract agency keeps getting glowing reviews about me - things are looking pretty good so far.

I really wasnt sure if this is a win or a rant or a whine or what. Im starting to get confused.

At the end of our first semester we had to do these oral argument competitions where we acted as appeals lawyers and represented clients in a fake case. In one of my rounds one of my judges was a local rockstar attorney who is a big name in the local legal community. After I was done he told me that I was a natural. At the time I thought he was just buttering my butt. The other night I found out the same guy told my friend that some people just aren't cut out to be lawyers. So apparently he really thought I did a good job.. or I guess she really sucks. I don't know but it makes me think of it differently.

I like to think I did well.

Driving a U-Haul full of my shit to my new digs tonight. See you guys on the flipside. FUCK THIS SHITHOLE!

And by this shithole I mean this town, not these forums. Sankyou.

Spent four and a half hours of the day off tearing open the storage boxes in our house, throwing stuff out, reorganizing. We have three trash bags/boxes going to the garbage, two bags of clothes for the Salvation Army, and a box of books for the library.

With that stuff out of the way, next weekend we can finish getting other stuff into the freed up storage boxes and organize my wife's arts and crafts stuff. The place is looking way better.
