Minor victory thread

I've heard about Khan Academy a lot, so I'm taking a look through it... Might fool around with this to refresh some skills or learn a little about new things.
It's actually a lot of fun, and they give you points/badges for "mastering" categories and completing X amount of topics. The points don't really do anything, but it's fun to see them increase! The videos are also easy to follow if you don't understand something.
They have other subjects too besides math, but I haven't checked them out yet myself. Hope you enjoy it! :)

This has never been a motivator for me haha... Gamer points, trophies, etc, steam achievements... I don't get it. I rather love learning and memorising, and I really like to talk to people about things I've learned, so that's what I'll get out of this (probably), although maybe not so much the talking to people.

What's really great is that you can customize your lesson plan and focus on skills you would like to improve on as well. If it gets to an area that you know nothing about, there's a button that says, "I have not learned this yet." If you have learned and simply forgot how to solve an problem, there's always a video as a nice refresher.
I love the simple and clean dashboard, and the best part is, there isn't a timer. (I hate feeling rushed when learning new things!)
There is also a "scratchpad" at the bottom if you don't have a pen and paper handy. :)

I think I may actually give myself a short math break soon (according to a site, I've been at this for 6 days now) and try something new like financing.

I want to read their history stuff; but it's the kind of thing where I read so much of it, I don't know what kind of 'teaching' they offer exactly. I mean, I can find books and books on a given topic, and soak them up.

Yeeeeaaahhh. And now we get to hear all the local transplants from up north and Europe tell us how this isn't cold. You know what's annoying and not the least bit helpful? That. Maybe I'll return the favor when it's 85 up there and we're on our 90th straight day of 100+ 95% humidity weather. Of course then they'll whine that it's only bad because they don't have the infrastructure to handle it...hypocritically ignoring the fact that that's why we were complaining about one day of snow.

welcome to Minnesota, where we get both of these now shush yourself. we have the infrastructure to plow ourselves out and deal with -25 °F weather and deal with 100 °F +100% humidity weather.

sometimes in the same day!

Come on, you bitch about cold that we would barely bat an eye at and we bitch about warm that is your daily life and we mock each other for it. It's the circle of life. That street goes both ways.

How about if I give @Cajungal permission to mock me when I whine about 80F being a heat wave of a summer? Would that balance the scales?

It's been so unseasonably warm here this year that we've been getting more rain than snow for the last 2 months. That's about 20000% more annoying. Everything being coated in polished ice is fucking terrible. Driving in this bullshit is awful.

People seem to be liking the warm though.

I'm also cold when it's 60 degrees, so I'll accept being laughed at. :p
After spending 6 years in the San Diego area and over 3 years here in HI I am right there with you. It was 62 this morning when I got up. I couldn't wait to drink my coffee so I would feel warmer. I walked around with a light jacket until noon.

Pretty much this. I would lock myself in the fridge if I had to deal with the heat the south deals with on a regular basis.

I can't handle humidity at all anymore since living in Colorado for 9 years. It makes me sad.
It should make you happy for not having to deal with that shit. You can add clothes to make you warmer. You can't take enough clothes off to make that horrible hot humid weather bearable.

Welp it's officially snowing in Austin as of right now. There's about a 1/2 inch layer of snow on the grass/patio area. May be more by morning. Minor Victory though because school is cancelled and my wife can stay home for a 3 day weekend!

At least not without an indecent exposure charge.

Cancelled for a 1/2 inch?? I realize it's a rare occurrence out there, but half an inch? Unless it's icy, that's not even dangerous driving conditions. You can clear that up with a hairdryer. :)
Meanwhile, we get 15" up here, and it was all over the news that the new mayor of NYC didn't cancel school.

I got a snow day today. But it really depresses me... The snow is too dry to make snow balls or snow men. So no Calvin sculptures today.

We have about a 1/4 inch of ice with 2 inches of snow on top.

Luckily I bought supplies last night. And by supplies I mean Jim Beam.

My dog totally flipped out about getting to play in the snow.

And yes he just jumped in the lake before I took the photo.[DOUBLEPOST=1390573742,1390573426][/DOUBLEPOST]My proper snow attire.

I'm loving the cold day. It's a welcome break. Seriously we really did break 90 days of triple digits here in houston in 2011, and bastrop literally burst into flames.

I was completely wrong about it being snow, it's actually 1/2inch of ice. Cars are sliding all over the expressway like ice skaters. Vehicles are physically unable to get over a single overpass and have stalled traffic for almost 2hrs. Austin PD has reported over 200 wrecks (not 200 cars crashed) over the past 9hrs. Almost 20 people have been hospitalized from just slipping on the ice while walking.

No it literally burst into flames. There's no error there. As opposed to the joke "I feel like I'm about to burst into flames."

Ice is another matter entirely. Even a little ice is dangerous. Hopefully you guys don't have to go out at all today, and I'm glad your wife didn't have to drive in it. To me, ice is one of the scariest things about winter, black ice in particular.

My car during Friday's Snowpacalypse. I did not think I could dig it out.

I feel your pain, surprising how much more snow we got here and then even how much more they got toward Toledo Bend and over into Louisiana.

Our car around 6:30am Friday.
and looking across the area...

I've been living with a flaky home button for over a month, and I can't tell you how nice it is to have it working every single time again.
You know there's a built-in workaround if this sort of thing happens again, right? It can be really handy in a pinch when you cant get service for a few days, or when the warranty has expired and you don't want to buy a replacement.

Almost done moving out of the old apartment and into the new place. Still have a few loads left with the cars of things that we either didn't have time to get into the moving truck, or that they weren't allowed to take (like booze, cleaning chemicals, and the decorative sword collection). The only problem is that the mold over there is so bad, we have to seriously limit our exposure time and everything that comes over has to be decontaminated before it can be introduced to the rest of the house - all fabric has to be laundered, all dishes have to be re-washed, etc. And of course, the flu that 12 hours of mold exposure left my body too tired to fight off, such that I was too sick to get out of bed for 3 days starting the day after all of the furniture was moved didn't help either. But we're almost done!
