Went to a job interview today. High school, one-year substitution as an English teacher, in a nice not-too-big-but-not-too-small-either town within an hour's drive. Included a chance of getting tenure after the year, and the town looked so nice I actually considered moving there.

Didn't get the job. Perkele.

On a lighter note, I then proceeded to beat my old record at bowling.

Lost power to the house due to storms. Ended up throwing away all the food in our fridge. Only saving grace from this is that it happened on a weekend after payday and we were able to go grocery shopping. So while it was pricey, we can still eat.

Lost our cat. Not sure if he's with the coyotes or locked in someone's house but it's been 3 days without sight of him which is not a good sign. We've had him for 11 years, the longest my wife has ever owned a cat and my first cat ever. Definitely put a cramp in the weekend. Going bushwhacking tonight to see if we can find any sign of a fight or anything - something to give us closure. Blah.

I'm about ready for summer to be over. This high pressure system that won't leave Texas is really making things not fun.

I don't know what's worse... the days where everything, everywhere smells like fresh feces, or the days where everything, everywhere, smells like fresh buttered popcorn.

Failed a PT test for another department... in my defense, it was 113 degrees with 90% humidity, and the only stage I failed was the run, but still.... fuckballs....

Ugh, that sucks man. I doubt I could have handled that either. I had a rough enough time when we do ours in May.

It really sucks because this was the department that I have kind of a side-door entry into, too - my mother's PGR connections are helping make contacts with brass on the department, but if I can't make the cut, the chief won't even look at it.

As a corollary, I left my damned running shoes at my parents place when I left there, so now I've got to shell out for another pair to continue running. Well... I SUPPOSE I could do it "boots and utes," but that would just make the suck even moreso....

If you somehow managed to miss all the ubiquitous advertising for shark week in almost every medium used by humanity, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't even watch actual TV (I torrent the shows), and even *I* knew about shark week.

I don't understand child custody laws. If you don't pay child support and actively avoid doing so to the point where you're $7000+ behind, why exactly do you still have the right to see the kid you won't pay for?

I dont think the government should be able to dictate when a person can see their own child based on money. I mean what if the government made it so the payments were so absurd that no one could pay it?

Obviously there is a case by case basis, and I'm just irked at the moment. In this particularly situation, of course I can only rant about what I know... The fellow was in the position to pay but it has been proven, hid money to avoid giving it.

The whole situation is fucky, but this point just irritates me for many complicated reasons. On the one hand, my sister brought a lot of this on herself... On the other hand, it's my parents footing the bill for his nonpayment. So my irresponsible sister and her irresponsible ex are both rewarded for dumb behaviour.

I hate it when people don't pay their child support. I am not sure what to do though. Fines just don't get paid and jail time just amounts to dead time really where they arent working. It is really frustrating. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him a decent human being.

Minor Rant:

I don't mind my job but I -hate- the people I work with. I work in in office monitoring network traffic for problems/outages to high-dollar fiber optic customers and the network that provides the data backbone to a major cellular company in the southeast. I share workspace with people doing a similar job for the cable TV/internet portion of the company.

That said there are TVs in the room for work purposes, monitoring channels for outages, quality, etc. Over night we have no supervisors in the room. Once midnight hits and the sups walk out the door the TV turns immediately to BET, the volume is turned up to obnoxious levels, and the room turns in to the night at the Apollo as the people take advantage of slow nights to hoot and holler at the TV.The N word is thrown around with wild abandon, and sex is usually the topic of discussion.

I am not racist by any means but being the only white person in the room for 8-10 hours depending on the day...that environment gets pretty uncomfortable. I bring this up to management once and I am told I am insensitive. FML.

I would but the TVs are controlled via a computer interface that I don't have access too since I don't do anything with the TV side of the business.

That said one night someone did turn the TVs over to CNN and I swear it was almost a riot. I was actually mildly afraid that night and someone did wind up getting fired over that ruckus.

My package is sitting at the post office that is only like a 3 minute drive from my house. But it won't get delivered to my house until tomorrow at the earliest. I would go and pick it up myself but they close at 4:30 and I don't get off of work until 5:00!

They're STILL packing the earth around my office building in preparation for the parking lot. Nine days of having everything move around on my desk.
