Opening Day!

Finally! Opening Day!

I've been anxiously waiting for baseball to return. This year promises to be full of excitement. A whole lot of teams look good (they always do on the first day), and the season holds nothing but potential. For me, it's all about watching my beloved Giants defend their championship.

Anyone else excited? Anyone else want to sound off for their team?

I'm very optimistic about the Bombers this year, certainly more than I was before spring training. The new guys were looking good, and the vets seemed to show some promising improvements and fixes. Of course spring training is meaningless, so we'll see this April if our slow starters have improved, and if A.J. Burnett has decided to stop pitching Bi-polar.

So the Yanks beat the Tigers 6-3, and the bullpen was perfect. I think I might be able to remain optimistic.

They did look good, especially that ridiculous bomb Teixeira hit. On the other hand, the Red Sox look nasty this year too. I expect the AL East will be even more of a dogfight than it usually is.

At least he's consistent. In about two hours, we'll see how many pitches it takes for Burnett to lose the strike zone.

ESPN is madly in love with Zach Greinke, and seem to think he is a pitching messiah brought to Milwaukee so he can usher in a golden age. Thus, they were all over the Brewers. It could still happen, but they have a few more kinks to work out first.

It's the 4th of July. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a game and a half out of first place. Joel Hanrahan is an All-Star on merit, not because the Pirates have to send somebody. Kevin Correia has been added, and Andrew McCutchen will surely be a last-second add because of all the media frothing on his snub. Potentially 3 all-stars from the Pirates.

Derek Jeter is at 2996. He has 4 games to get 4 hits, in order to be the quickest to reach 3,000 career regular season hits, and he hits .370 against the Indians.

The Yankees are 1.5 games ahead of Boston, and are second only to the Phillies overall. The Twins are not quite the worst team in baseball, considerably ahead of the Astros and only slightly behind the laughably bad Cubs.

#63

Covar

but based on everything coming out of Bristol, Jeter's a bum who went hitless (because nobody ever goes hitless in a baseball game) in his first game after being on the 15 day DL and missing 18 games. Clearly the man should be 9th in the lineup or just pulled.

You have to give respect for Boston after they engineered one of the greatest reversals within a single season. Hell, within a single half season.

We are watching the weirdest merry-go-round on the top of the NL Central standings ever seen since they formed the division in 1994.

Last team to lose might end up being the division champ at this rate.

EDIT: Oh, great: Cardinals have the Cubs and 'Stros the last week of the season, while we have the Fish and the Pi-rates. And the Pirates face the Reds before they come our way.

It really, really would not surprise me if the Cards blow by both us and the Bucs to take the division title.

#91

If there was any doubt that Phil Hughes was finished as a pitcher, this last game would have surely erased it. The Seattle Mariners beat the Yankees 9-2. The same Mariners that lost 17 games straight. Now, I'm sure the fielding and the hitting for the Yankees are to blame as well, and it looks like the bullpen was just giving runs away. But really, after a few other crummy starts following a long injury, if he can't get the job done against mediocre-to-poor teams, he doesn't belong in the majors.

I saw the tagging motion, but no real sign of contact (no shift in the glove or uniform). Even if there was instant replay I doubt it would have changed the call. *shrug* maybe there's better video out there than what they bothered to show on MLB.tv's recaps.

If MLB says it's the wrong call they should just resume the game at a later date.

I want to blame Huff for massively underperforming. Or Torres for the same thing. Or Schierholtz for going cold. Or Beltran for dogging it once he got to SF. Or the catching duo that wouldn't even be good if they could combine into one player. Or Cody Ross for reverting back to his old self. Or Zito for, well, being Zito. Or Muellens for being one of the most ineffective hitting coaches in the history of the league.

But with all those different things to blame, I suddenly can't decide who is at fault. I just know that the pitching is in a slump while the offense found a new low that no one thought was possible. It doesn't really matter who to blame. They just need to get their shit together. I would think a closed-door team meeting in order, involving a whole lot of yelling. Because they all deserve it. Every last one of them.

Difference between now and 1982:

In 1982, Rollie Fingers went down with an injury that essentially signaled the end of his career, and the Crew did not have anyone that could step in to take his place (though Pete Ladd did an admirable job of it).

In 2011, we have TWO FREAKING CLOSERS. If Axford ever choked, we could just switch to K-Rod. It's like having Mariano Rivera AND John Wetteland.

Oh.

You know, I'd completely forgotten about that. Of course, I kinda knew that Kendall had been a former Pirate when he played for us a few years ago, but I really didn't think that was when the tide had turned.

That was when the tide turned completely in Pittsburgh. If Kendall hadn't exploded his ankle, the streak might not have reached legendarily bad proportions.

As for the Yankees.... 0.5 game lead in the AL East, and the potential to win 100 games this season. Jeter is at 3,041 hits, #22 all time, 12 away from Carew and 14 away from Rickey Henderson, in 20th all time. He is on pace to finish near 18th - I doubt he'll crack 3110 this season. My predictions (fairly obvious) for the postseason:

AL East: Yankees by 1 game
AL Wild Card: Red Sox
AL Central: Tigers
AL West: Rangers

NL East: Phillies (duh)
NL Wild Card: Braves
NL Central: Brewers (bigger duh)
NL West: Diamondbacks

Yankees v Tigers, Yankees beat Tigers 3 games to 2
Red Sox v Rangers, Red Sox beat Rangers 3 games to 1

ALCS: Yankees v Red Sox - this one is too close to call. The Yanks have not done well against the Red Sox all year, though Boston has been looking vulnerable towards the end of this month.

Phillies v Brewers, Phillies win 3 games to 2
Braves vs Diamondbacks, Braves win 3 games to 2.

NLCS: Phillies v Braves, Phillies win 4 games to 2.

World Series: Phillies v Yankees or Red Sox, the series will probably go 7 games either way.

Off-Season: Jorge Posada should probably hang it up, and Mariano Riveira should figure that 2012 will be his last season. Something should be done about Burnett, but the Yankees are contractually locked up in him. He'll show moderate improvement in the early part of 2012, then have a disastrous second half, AS USUAL.

I'm still a Giants fan. I still love 'em for what they did last year. But goddamn if this isn't the worst offense that I've ever seen.

They had a stat window pop up during the game. Apparently 3 of the 4 least-supported pitchers in the league are from the Giants. That's just wrong. Lincecum, Cain, and Bumgarner should all have at least 15 wins by now. Vogelsong too, even though he wasn't listed. If this team had a real offense to go with these pitchers they would have the best record in the league, hands down.

no, he'll turn Dr Jeckel again, for one game remind everyone of what they hoped to get with $86 million and then he'll continue sliding. When he's good he's genius, when he's bad he's terrible.

#148

Null

Yeah, he's got this ability to make you think he's going for a no hitter, you go get a beer, and you come back and he's given up 3 or 4 runs.

They had to take him out of a game with a double digit lead.

AJ Burnett is a 50-50 pitcher at best. He has no confidence in his fastball, which makes the rest of his pitches ineffective, and that shitty knuckleball he tries to use is junk - most batters won't even offer because they know it's not a strike.

The sick thing is, if he moved a few inches to the right on the rubber, it might be a nasty pitch, skirting the corner of the plate consistently. As it is, it trails too far inside and no one's fooled.

Once again, more than 160 games in a season, and the only ones that are going to matter in the end are the ones against Boston. One more three-game set against the RedSox in September, and you know that's going to be the decider between winning the AL East and taking the Wild Card.

The Giants start a sink-or-swim series with the D-Backs tonight. If they lose the series, it's basically over (the season is on life support as it is). Bochy made a lot of changes and is trying to light a fire, so maybe it will work out. Or the D-Backs will stomp them. One way or the other.

With all the division races tied up, all the remains to be settled are the wild cards - will it be Boston or Tampa Bay in the AL, Braves or Cards in the NL. Condolences to fans of the Minnesota Twins, who are finishing dead last in the AL and 2nd worst in MLB.

#211

One day, four games to determine the two wild cards.
  • Yankees at Tampa (Rays would host a playoff game Thursday afternoon)
  • Boston at Baltimore
  • Philadelphia at Atlanta
  • Saint Louis at Houston (Cards would host a playoff game Thursday night)
All are simple: Win and the worst that happens is a playoff game. Lose and you have to have help to force a playoff.

And, in addition, four more games that might have some implications on the post-season:
  • Cleveland at Detroit - Tigers win, together with an Angels win, means Detroit will host the Wild-card winner.
  • Texas at Angels - Texas wins, they host the wild-card winner.
  • Pittsburgh at Milwaukee - Win by the Crew gives them the home advantage against either the Braves or the D'backs.
  • Dodgers at Arizona - Win by the D'backs with a Milwaukee loss gives them the home advantage against the Braves or the Brewers.

Yeah, what was up with the TBS guys? I mean, the one sportscaster didn't even know that Jeter had topped 3,000 this season, or at least was pretending he didn't.

Anyone else think Francona was happy to be let go? Yeah. Maybe next year. :(

I mean, it's great getting into the postseason and all, but when you have A-Fraud and Texiera going a combined 1-for-21 in the series, that's a dirty great hole in your lineup. The most productive people in the lineup write now are the 40-year-old Jorge Posada, and of course Robinson Cano. It's great that Jeter's getting hits but he's not getting RBIs, and in a series where you lose games by one or two runs, that fucking hurts.

I can't knock Sabathia's performance - 2 days rest is difficult and he kept the game from being a disaster, even though it was a short outing. But Soriano giving Delmon Young - a top rate first-pitch fastball slugger - a meatball right away to put into the right field bleachers does make your heart sink.

Out of the original poll I put up, only the Rangers remain. Can they make it all the way? Is this the year for them? Or will it be the surprisingly powerful Brewers? The Detroit Verlanders? Maybe the St. Louis Cardinals, who made it at the very last minute?

From here on out my money is on the Cardinals. They've got the big mo right now. The Brewers are pretty fearsome, though, so I wouldn't totally count them out. In the AL I see the Rangers going to the World Series again after a close battle with the Tigers.
