Personal Dealbreakers

#1

Hansagan

Just curious to get peoples thoughts....Wether you were just making someone's acquaintance, or had known them a long time, what would be a personal dealbreaker in the relationship? What single thing that they did or believed would cause you to think that they were no longer worth your time? What would make you give up on a person?

I would have to say Racism....not the everyday prejudices that most of us have (Whether we admit it or not) but honestly believing that one race is better/smarter than another. Neo Nazi / KKK type racism.

Thoughts?

Racism is actually not a huge deal breaker for me, partly because it's so common in my culture, you have to learn to accept it.

Personally I can't stand extreme lacks of personal hygiene. Back in high school, the computer lab technician's office was FULL of his body odor. I'd walk in and gag from the noxious fumes. He had a window in his office but it was never open. Probably all for the best, the smell would knock birds out of the sky.

I'm not the cleanest guy myself. I'll admit that. I'm a big slob. So when someone is so utterly unhygienic even I can't stand it, it's a deal breaker for me.

I am pretty forgiving of all the people I know but I have to say in recent years it has been "downer people". That is people who may not have it easy (and we all have had rough times at some point) but try to bring you down with them or make you feel bad because your life is going ok and theirs is not.

Lie to me once.

I give everyone the benefit of the doubt from the moment I meet them. I give you my 100% trust from the get go. As a balancer to that, you only get one shot with me. Fuck it up once, and you're done.

-Willful ignorance. I cannot stand people who believe they're right, regardless of any sort of evidence, and will take every opportunity to remind you of this.
-In the same vein, if you believe Intelligent Design should be taught in schools. You could be the smartest, most awesome person ever, but that causes my brain to feel like it's being wrung inside out.

-Cheating. I would rather have someone call me in the dead of night and say, "I'm breaking up with you; sorry, we'll talk later." than me find out/they confess later. Like Shego said, I will trust you implicitly; if you take advantage of that, fuck off. I don't need you.

Dusty668

Trust breaking. However I'm not likely to form a relation ship with someone who has a lot of drama going on either.

#9

LordRavage

B.O.

I cant hide my facial expressions when someone smells bad.

Trust is also a very big deal. I have ended long term friendships over trust issues. If a friend "F"'s me over...then it is over.

This.

My stepsister is the only one in my family I tell things to, because everyone else has broken my trust.

These are things that are deal breakers in friendship:

Lying, stealing. Those aren't things a real friend does.

I also don't do 'drama'...if someone is a total drama queen and is always surrounded by some kind of crisis or another, I tend to let those friendships peter out. Most people who are always surrounded by drama bring it into their own lives, and i just dont' have the energy to deal with someone else's problems all the time.

For relationships, the above also applies, but add the following:
Cheating (sexually), chronic poor personal hygiene, lack of intimacy (emotionally and sexually), lack of respect.

I wouldn't say it's a pillar, nothing as significant as that. It's that we don't have the racial diversity of other parts of the world, nor do we have racial issues as significant as those that have plagued the West. As a result we lack the racial sensitivity that some other countries might have.

I suppose an analogy might be saying obesity is an accepted part of American culture, or alcoholism is an accepted part of British culture.

I'm the same way.

I don't forgive people who lost their honor in my eyes. Example, my neighbor walked over to introduce himself when I first moved into my new house last March. He asked him if I intended to put up the fence this year, I told him yes, it was on my to do list and to give me a week or two to settle in.

Two weeks later I go see him about the fence, he tells me what sort of fence he wants, he wanted to go all fancy with black grills with golden pikes with an ornamental door. I look at him oddly and start to ask him questions about “lattes” (basically something to put on fences that will provide some privacy as the fence is closed off). He’s not interested. I’m unwilling to proceed as my other neighbor put up a nice beige frost fence with lattes and my backyard neighbor wanted the same. I didn’t exactly want to have one side of my backyard be black and open compared to beige and close. This neighbor also has 3 kids. I ask him to give me a week to think of it.

3 days later, some fence guys come and install the fence on his side of the yard.

I was pissed, but took their number nonetheless since we were shopping.

That weekend I invited 7-8 companies over to receive quotes, including the company who installed my neighbor’s fence. Ironically, the seller was someone I knew from high school and I got the best quote from them. I asked them about my neighbor’s and he told me they booked the installation from them…last August.

I was pissed. Since then, I’ve not spoken to them. Whenever they would wave or say hello (it has now long stopped), my fiancée and I ignore them. On Halloween, they tried to bring their kids over to get candy, I closed the door on them.

*snip* I wish they would either die or move. You can choose your house… but you cannot choose your neighbors.

Since this has happened, I left them a few surprises to say the least.

In the past I have actively chosen to break off relationships over

1) drug use
2) Secretly spiking my drink
3) flat-out refusal to return things I lend them
4) Bitching at me because I was busy doing my homework rather than doing her some favor that would have taken me all night
5) Being a woman-beating douchebag

Yes, I do hold grudges. That’s my deal breaker… I despise dishonorable people. If they can lie about something as insignificant about “fences”, how am I supposed to trust them? They tried to pawn me to front half his fee to buy his shitty fence selection. They could have easily told me that they already paid for it… they didn’t. They tried to fool me to think I had some option. That’s pretty damn douche. I got my own fence up now.

They are Korean... and they always yap in Korean. Especially when they see us in front of our house… they yap and stare at us. Maybe they are suspicious that perhaps I had something to do with various… unfortunate accidents.

It's possible that when Jay moved in, the guy wanted to see if he'd go half with him. Then when he found that Jay didn't want the same kind of fence as he did, and he wasn't going to back down on his preference, he ceased to pursue it. If anyone wanted to rip Jay off, it was the neighbor's kids trying to get a couple Snickers bars on Halloween. Fucking hooligans.

Wasabi Poptart

Lying. I usually do give second chances, but after that .

Bad personal hygiene. It's one thing to have BO on a hot day or after running a mile or 5, but simply not washing or brushing your teeth is repulsive.

Having a dirty house. I broke up with a guy partially because his house was a sty. There was one time I made him some soup because he was sick. He asked me to leave it on the stove so he could have some later. I came back to his house 2 weeks later and the pot was still on the stove with soup in it!! I lifted the lid and, I am not kidding, the soup was bubbling on it's own. If I tried to clean while I was at his house, he got mad at me. He had a cat that sprayed everywhere, including on my clothes. His bathrooms were scary. So was the sink full of month old dishes. The backyard had a little pond that was so choked with algae the pump didn't work. The house itself was beautiful. I couldn't imagine living in that place and letting it be so filthy. The real deal breaker there was when he bit off a piece of olive and spat it on the floor for his cat to eat. It still gives me dry heaves.

Needing to prove you're better than everyone else. I hate smug assholes.

I've seen racism as a dealbreaker in here. If I'm talking to a potential friend and they sound really bigoted, that's usually time for me to say "so long." But I can deal with the learned behaviors of family and friends. If they know they can't get away with it around me, they'll keep their mouths shut.

Neediness is another big thing. If someone is really clingy, that relationship isn't going to last. I've never been lied about that I know of, but that would be a big problem. I feel uncomfortable around religious people who try and get me to read their scripture and join their congregation and stuff. If they mention it once and then move on, that's fine by me. I might have done the same back when I was religious, but then I'd drop it if I knew they weren't interested.

#76

Vytamindi

Vytamindi

Ugh... I can't think of any because I am the WORST friend ever...

My best friend lives an hour away from me... and the last time I saw her before this past weekend was almost a year. I never call, I hardly text, but when we finally get together we start right back where we left off.

She's a great friend because she realizes how busy we both are and how important it is to us to live our own independent lives. I've always been kind of a loner, and she is accepting of that.

And I also stood up for her in college when no one else did. She's my best pal!!!

The biggest personal dealbreaker for me, I suppose, is someone being non-genuine. It's hard to describe (and especially hard to determine through a message board...), but it just annoys me to no end when a person is being fake. I can't stand my brother many times because he does it all the time. The problem is, his "fake" is being a smug, arrogant douche. He says it's not how he really is, but to me, that just makes it worse.

Its better than being a fucking queer." Two of my friends immediately turned to walk off while I was standing mouth agape and then the guy says "I bet they also voted for that atheist *** Obama."

no you're not, you asked her if she got wet and then made a fart joke.
So, this would be a bad time to ask about the heat index, then?

Or if the prevailing winds are pulling in odors from the smelting plant.

Well, she said it was Louisiana. Last time I was there, I endured a certain amount of natural aroma from the local flora and fauna. It was actually quite nice. You could just breathe in and the smell of life on the air would just perk you right up.

I'm mostly concerned with the humidity. Hot and humid is a dangerous combination. Your sweat doesn't work like it should...last time I was in that state, i swear my face was constantly slick and shining with moisture.

My deal breakers would be bigotry in general, lying and being two-faced.

I cannot stand two-faced people. That is the one thing I never ever forgive.

LOL! Self-inflicted torture since I keep coming back. Seriously, I try not to let the internet world get to me. IRL it's harder to walk away from sometimes.

I couldn't be in a relationship with anyone excessively shallow, egregiously stupid or overdramatic. Beyond that, you folks might be surprised. The little woman's actually a big fan of the idea of single payer health care.

Let's see now... racism definitely. Unfortunately there's two in my extended family, related by marriage (my uncle and my cousin's hubby). Their immigration policy consists of gathering all "wrong-coloured" people in boats and shipping them off.

Wilful ignorance (eg. Intelligent Design in my books), co-dependency, unreliability, intolerance, Bible bashing, rudeness... your average things, I suppose.

I was tempted to say theorists (911, moon landing, anti vaxers etc) But then I realised I know a few people who have these beliefs who are otherwise totally decent human beings. I just put those subjects on my 'do not talk about' list when around them.
