[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Even worse than the double devious of roping in hapless college students for her scheme...is the fact that her sole motivation for doing this is that her boss just wanted her to pallet swap some graphics. THAT'S IT! And hell, Q promoted her and everything! Sure he's not asking much of you but still - HE PROMOTED YOU!

So with Table Titans, Val has literally had the Dwarven God make an appearance and talk about how awesome she is, the chosen one, etc. Though it's a bit weird describing the daughter of a Legendary Cultural Hero as "from humble origins"...

I'm finally off of the PVP bandwagon. I check in here and there so that I can read in batches.

Interestingly enough, what CAD is doing lately has me really interested. I love Star Wars type shit and that's right up my alley.

Since he's dropped the Ethan storyline and has been focussing mostly on one-shot game comics, the average quality has been way higher. The current stoyline is pretty fun, too - I liekd most of the "CYA" lines so far, even if they're a bit weird and illogical sometimes.

You don't have to be a fan of Tim himself, but for the past months, I can easily say CAD's been a better comic than PVP.

Say what you will about Buckley (and there's certainly a lot to say on the negative side), but he has a reasonably solid work ethic. Buckley is aware of who butters his bread, and if nothing else produces 3 strips a week (on time) that aren't mailed in (by his standards anyways).

Kurtz takes whatever fanbase he has left for granted, and doesn't give a shit about his hilariously terrible work ethic. Not only does Kurtz regularly miss strips, but many of the strips he throws out get entirely half assed in both the art and writing departments. I think people forget that there was once a time in where Kurtz could have been near PA levels of big - all he had to do was have passion for his work and stick with what initially brought him success. Instead of improving his product (ie: adding color) and staying on topic (original focus on video games), he ended up putting in a minimal level of effort while simultaneously switching to a considerably less entertaining format.

edit:

I'd also probably add that between Kurtz and Buckley, Buckley has at least publically appeared to have matured a bit as the years have gone on. He still might be a raging asshole, but it seems like he's learned to hold it in. Kurtz still acts and presents himself as not only an asshole, but a paragon of the industry (when he's anything but).

It may have been a weeks-long dick'n'fart joke, but the farty trolls arc was actually not bad. Its the kind of situational PVP comic I would have liked to see more of. If he keeps doing that regularly, I might even have to add PVP back into my RSS list again.

It was largely on time, low on random silhouettes, and consistent (if basic) with the humor. Not bad. I hope this trend continues.

Oh, is he still updating?

Maybe we should fund a Kickstarter: "Scott, Here's $10,000, please update your comic on a regular basis!"

Stretch goal: "For $15,000, Actually FOCUS on your comic."

I could be wrong, but didn't someone on this thread say he's got another person or two working on PVP? How is it possible 3 people can't focus on 1 comic?

Interesting graph in terms of completely fucking up a good thing -

https://www.quantcast.com/cad-comic.com

Set settings to alltime, weekly impressions.

Buckley effectively lost 40-50% of his base permanently because of his radical strip change. No wonder the guy is going nuts with things like Patreon in an attempt to stay afloat. Which begs the question of how the hell is Kurtz still staying around when PvP's graph is likely far more dire? (can't see it because the website isn't even big enough) Living in Seattle on the type of non-income that Kurtz is bringing in can't possibly be going well. I tend to wonder if he's just mooching off his wife's income at this point.

I think Scott is making a not-insubstantial amount of money off of Wizards of the Coast right now... it's officially sponsoring Table Titans and they also pay him to do their Acquisitions Inc. podcast and convention appearances. Also consider that he doesn't have a lot of overhead aside from living expenses and PVP's web hosting... the Table Titans book is being financed entirely by Kickstarter, he's basically selling off a stockpile of already paid for PVP merch, and all of his travel expenses are paid for by Wizards because he doesn't do conventions anymore that aren't ether local or a paid work visit by Wizards. To put it simply, he's doing really well entirely because of his connections with Hasbro.

He's easily making enough to be middle class... he's just doing it by working on stuff OTHER than the one that made him famous, which is why PVP has kind of gone to shit.

According to that website, Bing is the 15th most popular website there is.

How much of that is because of people with IE who have it as their homepage?

If rumors are to be believed, Bing is superior to Google when it comes to searching for porn. I wouldn't know, of course, I never search for porn.

(I already have stable, preferred sources of pornography, there's no need to search for it)

I don't think anyone searches for "porn" any more. I mean, you can't just go to the market and buy a big box labeled "food," right?
I assume it's because people don't want Google to "remember" that you searched for "asian cream pie sauce" when it decides which ads to serve you on all your other websites.
Sooo...all that traffic goes to Bing.

What the hell happened to the art for The Trenches?
New artist. I think this makes... 5?

I think The Trenches is where they stick people who win their contest so they have a paying gig while working on their own comics. Sort of a work-study program for aspiring web comic artists.
