[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Anyone see the news post today? All about huge positive response to Val.

And honestly, I can get with that. I do like the character. It's just unfortunate she was introduced in such a lackluster story arc. But I'd rather see more of her in the comic than LoLBat and Scratch.

I actually like my PVP much more grounded in reality. When he veers into stuff like dwarfs and trolls and shecky's, etc, I just kind of glaze over. It's almost never funny.

The thing of it is, though, is that even if people hated Val, he'd just say "Well, it's just a few really vocal people, most of you guys love this shit" - remember the Scratch of Thrones arc? But if three people liked it, "I'm blown away by the positive response" to a character he's going to shoehorn into the comic from now on, because he spent "so much time" designing her. Even though in her first appearances she changes size 4 or 5 times.

I'm more amazed that he's gone 4 straight days with early updates. Has his lateness become so awful that it's circled around enough that we get the comics early now?

Today's is still not posted. I didn't see yesterday's until this morning. Perhaps you are posting from an alt-universe with early comics. Is is funny, or more filler (like yesterdays). We get it, trolls make her angry, but he stood up for her, so she likes him. Today's comic would have been far better (not funny, but more reliant) if she had not kissed him (but then we would not have had yesterday's chuckler of Jade calling girls gross).

Yeah, he hasn't. Thursday's (the braiding the hair bit) was so late, I, too thought it might be friday's early. But his own archives calendar betrays the truth. Today's hasn't been posted yet.

Heh, a reference to Scott in Skyrim

It's found in the Embershard mine.

In the Penny Arcade/PvP/Wil Wheaton D&D stuff, Scott plays a dwarf named Binwin Bronzebottom and is mortal enemies with the Ambershard dwarves.

That's more than a little coincidental.

Saturday, 5:41 AM EST. Friday's strip still not posted, probably won't be posted for another 6 or 7 hours.

I suspect the excuse will either be an implausible technical problem "Well, I uploaded it, but I forget to set it to update" or just complete horseshit "A falcon flew into the office and stole my tablet so Kris and I had to track it down through a serious of wacky misadventures."

Actually, that last one would be better than any comic update he's capable of producing.

Oh yeah, I'm sure a story about Scott and Kris would be humorous and entertaining. He should just start doing that as a comic.

I wonder why it's always the Friday strip he has trouble with.

It is now 11:25 AM Eastern Time, Saturday. Friday's strip is still not up, and probably won't be until late tonight.

You know, we should make a "Kurtz excuses" thread, just to come up with entertaining reasons why it's late.

And to log each week's reason as given by Scott.

My fucking god. His excuse is basically "I was fucking around." I mean, you relax when your work is done, not before you even start.

@oldhat Some cartoonists only produce 3 strips a week. Some only one. It's a matter of brand trust and expectations though. I get it

@oldhat I can't argue with you. Nor will I. But considering the amount of content I produce, I can't feel I'm doing wrong by you either.

@artistxero No. You'll get it tomorrow, actually. today got eaten by business calls and bad planning :(

Sitting on my couch, airplaying Christmas music from Pandora to the Apple TV, writing a book. A perfect Friday night.

I love how he's still using the "it's free, can't complain" thing. At what point would someone legitimately have the right to complain? Clicked an ad? Donated? Bought the Awesomeology?

If anything, it's not complaining or a sense of entitlement--it's criticism.

But I guess he didn't make an excuse this time; he pretty much just said he didn't do it because he felt like doing other things. PVP is no longer a priority for him. That's fine, at least he's honest about it.

I am amazed at all the emails I've received telling me how much they appreciate the late strip. They are telling me it gives them something to look forward to. . . meaning to their lives. Of course a small vocal minority still complains but I just ignore them focusing on the bigger picture.

I can really see the sizing thing in Saturday night's strip. A week before, she was up on Skull's shoulders, and then he had to bend down to shake her hand. Now she's up around his shoulder.

I guess that's part of her magical dwarf powers - to randomly change size between panels or strips. I mean, it's not like he spent a while working on the character, or the good part of a post-con season retreat ironing out the kinks in her design. For example, her size relative to the environment and other characters.

Ohhh...I didn't realize the strip referenced back to another one. Keep your strips self-contained, Scott!
Especially when the reference is to a throwaway comment in the first panel of a comic from nearly a month earlier (October 17 to be exact)!!

And the statement that Dwarves don't drink coffee? Total throwaway line in the comic in which it appeared.

So, she's willing to kill him on sight because of his race, but when he said she wasn't a freak (before momentarily taking it partially back), she's willing to completely change her personality to suit him.

Great writing. :Leyla:
