[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

To be fair, if I changed a font here you people would implode with self-righteous fury and fervor.

:pwn:

To be fair, if you changed the entire forums page to have the least to do with the forums and more to do with selling the HF products with only a small link to the forum? Yeah I'd be upset.

Otherwise, exaggerate much?

But there was no smiliey face! How was I to know?!

Also, what was the point? That we're attacking the horrid quality of the site because we hate change? If so, that's not even remotely the point of the annoyance at the site's changes.... :(

Probably. The comic page is fine, the main page is like throw up though.

Also, why the hell are these two guys so damn defensive on twitter? No wonder they couldn't hold down a forum, I'm surprised they can handle twitter since they freak out when anyone dares to differ with them.

The more time goes on, the more I see resemblances between George Lucas and Scott Kurtz and not in the way Kurtz would take that....

Dave is getting old, he forgot to mention the font he plans to use for the forum is Comic Sans.

No, we wouldn't. If you redesigned the site so that the topics were nearly impossible to find and it was covered in huge banner ads - if, in short, it was a terrible design - then yes, of course we would. It's not about change, it's about poorly executed and counter-productive change.

Now, this is using Alexa and I'm not going to pontificate about the value in using Alexa to judge popularity however, I would consider XKCD far more nerd-centric than PVP is.

I will say that when the only value proposition you have is giving something away free, and then you hide it behind horribly dramatic blog posts, ads for said 'free material' bound into a new medium, links to 'other projects', and other fluff, you're not doing something particular business savvy.

At least PA has the excuse that they are more interested in becoming a media company than a webcomic company. Or at least that's the only thing I can assume when their front page looks like this:

That's a great teaser for their latest comic!

Now, I'm no webcomic artist. But I am a marketer and a technologist. If adding a bunch of 'brand' to your website:

1) Hides your webcomic
2) Increases server load
3) Increases bandwidth costs
4) Potentially increases advertising revenue

I would hope that you've got a strong business case for doing so. As it is, I can cost Kurtz a shit tonne of money by installing ad block and visiting his website on a regular basis, increasing his costs with no measurable impact to income. And as he makes the comic less and less integral to his site, the less I'm inclined to even bother going there.

Let's call it "the Laffer Curve of Webcomics". Net income will increase as you market your "business" more and more on your site, until the content is overtaken by the framework, in which case you're paying increasing infrastructure costs to remind people you still have a web comic.

Emphasis mine. There are literally two different places right on the new main page that link to the comic. One is right at the top just under the PVP Banner with Featured Projects links. The other is to the left of the blog post right at the top. With a preview picture. With "Latest Comic" at the top and the comic's title at the bottom. I'm not to keen on the new design (not a big fan of Penny Arcade's design either), but saying that anything vital is "nearly impossible to find" is overstating it.

When you go to a comic's webpage, and your first words are "Where's the fucking comic?" it's a bad design. Okay, I exaggerated. You caught me, you pedantic twat.

Honestly, thats how I feel about the new-ish PA site as well though. Hence why I tend to use the RSS feeds to link me.

I don't mind the PA site wither. They have more than the comic going for them. I like checking out PATV and their new PAReport. Sometimes the comic is that last thing I click on, like it is dessert or something.

Oh, I like the blog posts as well, I'm just saying that design wise, it's a little cramped and the comic link doesn't "stick out" from the rest of the design.

So, is it safe to assume Scott's long term goals largely involve making PVP a nerd humor hub and keeping the comic characters as mascots/swag bait?

Called it. The RSS feed no longer embeds the comic, it just links to it. I think I'll be unsubscribing.
@pvponline Can you switch the RSS feed on the new PVP online back to full-feed, please?

@soulcookie No. I'm afraid if you want to read my comic, you must visit my website.

@pvponline (And if I'm a little pissy, it's because I have enjoyed your work, but expected better of you.) #butgoodlucknonetheless

@soulcookie I'm glad you could have that argument with me, without me. It made it very convenient.

@pvponline Does the argument matter? Your answer wasn't "Why?" It was "No." I think it's a dumb decision.

So far I have been able to keep reading PVP despite how much of a douche Kurtz can be at times. But lately between the craptastic quality, late comics, new site design it is getting very tempting for me to just drop PVP altogether. Which kinda sucks becuase I really enjoyed his comic in the past but over the years it has just gotten worse and worse on top of Kurtz getting a bigger and bigger ego. Now normally I could deal with Kurtz having his moments but everything combined is just getting to much.

I'll just host the scraper somewhere and post the link in this thread. That way you can read the comic without reading the rest of the claptrap.

Lots of "why don't you bookmark the comics page *wink*" BS.

Does he really not get it that bad? Going by his blog post, I suspect that most of the questions on that OK Domo survey were answered with, "I wanna be like Mike (Krahulik)"

Man...I dunno if it's my adblock or what, but like does the top 1/3rd of the page need to be only featured projects before it even gets to comic stuff? Does it need to take up so much space? It's kind of...I dunno, ugly. I don't like it.

So maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I don't think valerie should be getting higher bidding than Scratch, Max or Robbie on the cast page.
