After a big rainstorm yesterday I went out to the backyard of my parents' house to help clean up. I went into the garage to get some tools, and that's when I saw a very special container I had been keeping at their house. The bin has clear sides, so I could see all the water that was sitting at the bottom of the supposedly water-proof container. I quickly opened up the seal and frantically dug through the contents. The container was where I stored some classic comic books that were given to me by my uncle when I was a kid, some of my own old comics, and some valuable keepsake stuff from high school. All paper products, and I would say that 50% was completely water damaged (despite each individual comic book being supposedly seal in plastic).
So, to review, the roof of my parents' garage sprang a leak during the storm. A supposedly water-tight container filled with water despite being sealed. No other container that was stored on top of it, under it, or next to it leaked. Roughly half the comics inside, which were individually bagged and should have been protected also, allowed water in and damaged the comics. Some of them were quite old and valuable.
I'm still so fucking angry I want to go on a rampage smashing things in my house. I think the random, ridiculous nature of it all is what has me most upset.
