Secret Santa 2020 - Have a Very Covid Christmas

Well, I dunno. I've been expecting the appearance of a thread on this for a while now, it's usually posted around Halloween.

Let's all give @Emrys something to do! Make sure all the Doomies deliver on time!

Anyway, I'm in. Third time's a charm - two years ago I got nothing at all, last year half of it arrived broken, so I'm going to assume this year it'll be completely awesome and great, but sadly shockingly pink and two sizes too small.

What is it?
It's a Secret Santa between your fellow halforumites. Everyone who signs up will be randomly assigned another participant. You are then tasked to buy that person a gift. As a recipient, you should leave a few hints in a post to this thread as to what sort of interests you have.

Rules and Info

To sign up, send @Emrys a PM with your email address, shipping address, and any gift rules/restrictions. Be sure to specify whether or not you would accept NSFW or "adult" gifts (such as alcohol/sex themed gifts). Also, please specify if you are unwilling/unable to ship internationally.
International people are allowed. If you would prefer not to get an international person, indicate so when you sign up. It may be the case that if you restrict your choice to local shipping then matching might not work out and you may be left out - she'll let you know once the matching is complete if that's the case. So far we've always been able to match everyone that wanted to participate and meet their shipping requirements.

Who can sign up?
To keep things fair, only those with a join date earlier than April 15, 2019 with more than a handful of posts will be allowed to participate (for obvious reasons). If you would like to participate and don't fall under the requirements then you will just have to wait until next year. The final say of who can join this activity will be entirely up to Dave so there may be exceptions, but his final word is final. Don't complain if special dispensation is not made for you. This goes for those who may be disincluded as well.
The deadline for signing up will be announced shortly. After that day, Santas will be randomly assigned by computer. You will be sent an email or PM shortly after with the information of whom you will be drawing a gift for.
Recommended gift value is $5 to $25, unless you're buying for me - then, it's $1.000 to $7.500 . Feel free to spend as much as you want, just be aware that the more you spend, the less likely you will receive a gift of equal value. Also, homemade/handmade gifts are allowed, and even encouraged (no homemade food please).
ABSOLUTE FINAL DEADLINE FOR GIFTS SENT IS DECEMBER 15th! PEOPLE WHO DO NOT SEND GIFTS BY DECEMBER 15th WILL BE FORCIBLY TIED TO THE GROUND, COVERED IN MEAT PASTE, AND SWARMED BY HUNGRY PUPPIES. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are not CERTAIN you will be able to send a gift, then don't sign up.
Do not complain about your gift, conversely, try to send something you think the other person will like.
You MUST post pictures of your gift when you receive it. No exceptions.
UNLESS SPECIFIED AS SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE, PLEASE DO NOT SEND NSFW OR ALCOHOLIC GIFTS. Please note that many states/nations have rules about shipping alcohol, so when in doubt, choose another gift.
CAN I SHIP SOMETHING STRAIGHT FROM AMAZON OR SOMETHING?
Yes you can, and it's a good idea to shop at your person's home country's Amazon site (www.amazon.ca for instance) if you want to save a bit on shipping.
SHIP WELL IN ADVANCE
Get your act together NOW and ship your stuff by Dec 15th to make sure it arrives before the crazy Christmas rush that always happens at the latter half of December.

As people sign up, the Queen will post a list showing their names. When we move on to the next step, I'll be sure to update that too.

I would love to join in again, but just to clarify, is Our Lady of the Doomweasel good with taking on the organizational end again? Not that I doubt the word of Her Strigiform Herald, but, well, times being as they are it would give me some peace of mind if we get some confirmation before I sign up.

I'm in again, after some prompting by @Emrys when I missed this thread being created. I looked last week at some point actually to see if I'd missed it even!

Gonna be lazy since it's not changed substantially and repost my prompts from last year. Here's my bookshelf again this year and my ebooks, only thing not pictured that's changed there is @ThatNickGuy's wonderful gift last year of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes. Good way to get an idea of the things I like. Particular favourites are the Red Rising series.

Also, I realized recently that while I've been playing League of Legends since early 2011 I don't have anything league related. These are my top 8 most played champions, Lux by a huge margin.

And here's my list of steam games. Please...don't buy me any more games though. Not even gonna bother linking to my wishlist, the profile is just again to give a good idea of what I'm into.

Let me know if this kickstarts any ideas. If not, I can provide more!

I have actually found another anonymous addon, but the one they have to download is exclusively for XF 2.2 and we are still on 2.1. So when I get the right package downloaded (I have contacted the dev, they say in their post it is for either version, but there's no way to actually DOWNLOAD the 2.1 version.)

ANYWAY...once I got motivated this morning, Cranky informed me, "Your package came! I left it on your chair."

Yes, my battlestation is kinda cramped. Better pic(s?) of it will be coming to the station thread once I get around to it. Anyhoo, I was not expecting any package (especially not on a Sunday), and there's no return address, so I assume it's something from my SS2020. Off to the operating table for dissection!

Or the kitchen island thingie, at least. Just FYI, it is annoyingly difficult to take pictures of a 3-D object when warm incandescent light hits it from one angle but cool daylight is coming from the other. Ok, time to pull the "pull strip to open" strip.

AHAHAAHaa oh man. Whoever packed this does the same thing I do, where you load all the peel-off bits right into the package you're sending after you peel 'em off rather than letting them pile up. So efficient!

Jell-O? Someone sent me a box of raspberry Jell-O? Then why did it come with something from Sʌmsung?

Aha! It's not raspberry Jell-O after all, it's raspberry pie! Specifically a Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB, with accessories), which Wikipedia tells me is basically an open-source(-ish) iPhone 5s. And the card says...

...that it's from Santa @GasBandit ! Well now we're even, I suppose.

I gotta say that I... don't really know what to do with it. A year ago, I would've immediately turned it into a DNS adblocker for the house with Pi-hole, but since I went and built a full-scale pfSense router to handle that sort of thing, that's off the table. I could emulate a console I don't own, I suppose (which is most of them), or set something up to learn Python/Javascript/whatever. Who knows? The Internet is chock full of ideas, but they'll REALLY have my attention if one of 'em has plans for a time machine... since that would let me go back in time so I could be the FIRST person to post in the SS2020 thread!

Bah I have 2 people IRL asking me the same. I'm the worst to buy gifts for.

Buffalo Bills stuff is always cool. Anything that could be on display, or even some kind of kitchen item that's Bills themed would be cool.

I like spicy food, any kind of unique hot sauce or chilis would be cool, as something to use on a lark. I don't have any food allergies, but anything that is shelf-stable and can be shipped would be fine, also along the food path I'd be open to any regional item that wouldn't be available where I live (though like I said in my notes, no liquor as I've learned I probably just won't like it).

If you're still having trouble, an 85-inch 4k tv would be nice as well (shoot your shot, right?).

Best to blur, like Patrick did, or tape over or whatever. you'd be surprised how easily people can get info that way. I'm a white hat, obviously, I would *never* use info like this for nefarious purposes (ignore the owls nesting outside your window as we speak, DA!) but sadly CS regularly gets calls with partial info trying to get more information about shippers/recipients to steal their identity or make fraudulent claims.

As a fellow White Hat, I will say that people frequently remember to cover/obscure the human-readable portions, but then forget to similarly obscure the machine-readable bits. Also, people don't realize how much redundancy is built into those machine-readable bits, meaning that relevant information can frequently be recovered even if only part of it is visible.

An aside: I officially remember what I don't like about Brixl building toys. For one, they have you build things by layers instead of by sections (like you would with LEGO). And, there's also the size of the bricks (seven dots = a little over an inch). But the worst part? The colors of the bricks are shades different.

Not really. I did check on things last week, and discovered that even though I ordered from a merchant on amazon.fr, the packages were actually sent from New York, New York, USA. Turns out the .fr storefront is just a façade for a vendor actually located in NYC, and so that is why it is taking so long. They asked if I wanted a refund, but I assured them that I know delivery is slow these days, and that I was just checking up on things. They mentioned it was sent via RRD on Dec 8&9 (2 parcels) and that packages to Belgium usually take 2-4wks, but they did not give me any of the tracking information, and they also did not know how much additional time gets added due to COVID tacking on additional days for screening/quarantining.

They did seem to think that delivery would be completed by the 24th, though.

Just remember: Green one first.

I suppose it’s ultimately because I think you’ll end up enjoying the other one more, and didn’t want Tears to get lost/discarded, so to speak.
Chronicals is an omnibus collection of books 1-3 of a 9-book series, so there’s plenty more to read (though I admit I prefer the earlier ones). Tears, however, is one of maybe 30+ books all taking place in the same universe at around the same time (out of the 140 or so by the same author :Leyla:

), but their plots/adventures/characters vary more from book to book. So while I feel confident this one will grab you, I don’t know about the rest.

As to why you had not heard of either? I don’t get it, either. The reason you got two books was because I was concerned that if you only got one it would end up duplicating something you’d already read. But you haven’t heard of either of them? Then buckle up, my friend, because you are in for a ride!
