It baffled me at first, but I made up my own backstory, and am gratified to see that my made up story fits the reality.

Which, of course, reflects well on the art and execution.

Perhaps like Gabe standing there, looking at his watch?

Oh, wait.
Yeah, that shows waiting (though could also be checking the time), but not waiting for something to suddenly appear. Big difference. The second panel, like I said before, doesn't really look like that to me. Sorry to offend you by not getting the joke.

There's just no connection between the panels for the uninitiated. Maybe something indicating that he's waiting for the plane, which suddenly appears. I know now that those little lines are indicating a sudden appearance, but I would've gotten it if there was an SFX or something. I thought they were speed lines. It looked to me like the plane was moving and the other guy was hanging onto the side of it as it moved. I couldn't even tell that was the plane crashing. Maybe if the tail was sticking out of the fireball or something. I would've gotten it right away then.
I think you are overanalysing it because you didnt get the comic.

Everyone else got it, and the 4 Battlefield gamers at my house didnt have any problem understanding it. Anyway, its a comic for gamers, and theres an accompanying new story for hose who dont know the game,

I wouldnt read a comic for physics teachers or skateboarders, because I know I wouldnt get it.

I never played any of those games. So I had to read it twice to get it. Like Stienman, I pieced it together. I admit it could be more clear, but I did get it.

Having said that, a lot of PA strips I don't get because I don't play any console games and I generally stick with 1 PC game for several years (MMORPG) at a time exclusively. A lot of that stuff is over my head. I think I'm just hanging around for DivX and the Fruit Fucker anyway.

Similar to how I live to see Belkar and Vaarsuvius and don't really care about most of the rest of the Stick. And O-Chul. And Argent. I would give anything to have a big ass dog jump out of my Pokeball...

That last sentence made me feel a little dirty.

Yes, I was. I was just trying to explain how in my opinion they could've opened it up for people who hadn't played the game, that's all. I didn't even mean it as a serious critique, just more of a shoulder-shrugging, "Eh, I guess he could've done this, but whatever".

i feel any more would have brought it into a "you had to be there" type situation...and as the ding reboot proved those suck donkey balls. this works for anyone who has ever played a battlefield/battlefront game, like me, who loved it.

This I think is the main reason why they set it up the way they did. Any more additions wouldn't have made the joke any funnier for people who never played or heard of Battlefield where as anybody who has played battlefield can identify the situation immediately with nothing more than any 2 of the panels.

People need to not be spoon fed delivery lines. Sure, you'll feel withdrawl at first, you may not have those 2nd chances to have the joke's punchline delivered along with the comfort of a farting noise. Give it some time, the confusion will pass and eventually you'll find yourself more enlightened at the creative subtleties of PA.

I've never played any of the BF games(my FPSs have to have aliens and/or zombies or I'm generally not interested), but I got it with no problems.

PA's strip can be related to any multiplayer game where vehicles are involved. For any multiplayer gamer it should be immediately relatable. It made me chuckle anyway and I never played Battlefield either.
