I wasn't expecting an action film. I knew there would be some, but it seemed more suspenseful. There definitely were some good, tense moments.

So saw Prometheus with the fiancee today. We enjoyed the shit out of it. I loved seeming some real good use of Gieger's concepts and a couple of subtle nods to HP Lovecraft as well. The basic plot ideas that kicked it off are intriguing, kinda old school Sci-fi stuff. That's what I really enjoyed the most, this felt really old school sci-fi story telling. It reminded my a lot of Jack McDevitt's books.

Despite a few flaws and a just okay ending, this was really good. Also the closest film I've seen to capturing H.P. Lovecraft's whole idea of cosmic horror.

I actually liked the movie. Possibly because I really liked the story and was happy to see someone go through with filming it. But yes, I believe they could've done better.

You know when you know you're out of milk, but you still open your fridge to check, just in case someone magically teleported milk into your fridge while you weren't looking? You open your fridge door to check for milk, fully expecting there to be no milk, but you decide to check nonetheless? Maybe it's kinda like that.

Or like when you stay up way too late on the forums and then get up real early. You know no one's posted in that time, because everyone smarter than you slept longer, but you check anyway just in case someone magically has less of a life than you do.

Why are we spoiling this shit?

Watched several movies yesterday:

MIB 3
Probably the most 'hearty' of the MIB movies. FX are getting a little stale but Brolin's impersonation of Jones is spot on. Entertaining.

Act of Valor
By far not the best acted but the director got some great action out of it.

Battleship
Transformers 4 In the Water, by way of Armaggedon (stealing some not so subtle Bay styles and subplots). Not excruciatingly painful, which isn't much of a thumbs up.

Wife and I watched John Carter tonight. I'd seen it, she hadn't. Beforehand she warned me "This had better be a good movie."

Afterward: "That movie was so great!" And then we ended up having an hour-long discussion about characters, the time period, lots of stuff. Made me realize a lot of impressive stuff Andrew Stanton did in directing it that I hadn't noticed before. Then we had fun bitching about Disney's stupid title change and marketing.

Anyone who's not seen it and likes sci-fi/fantasy should really give it a shot. It's fun adventure and none of the trailers get across the adventure, cute things, humor, or heart of the film, all of which make it worth watching.

I've noticed that they've brought back references to Mars in the television ads. They've seemed to realize some of their mistake a little too late.

I remember the first teasers that came out, it was all JCM this and JCM that. Apparently they got some stupid test group that was all "Mars is so stoooopid. Why ya gotta talk about Mars? I want a candy bar." and decided that they were a genius test group and dropped all the Mars references. I'm so irritated about that. Hopefully the movie brought in enough total to make them realize that they need the sequel.

Eventually, this week, I'll watch my copy of John Carter. I'm looking forward to it.

Actually it was the first marketing person they hired, MT Carney, who said that movies about Mars don't perform well. No one told her that something is better than nothing.

This Means War. Fuck the person that wanted to make every shot a solid color. Saturation was way to high and made the movie damn near unwatchable. Plot was mediocre with some entertaining moments. Actors were good, although the man opposite of Chris Pine seems like a really odd casting choice. Overall not worth your time, unless you catch it on cable.

I watched Contagion, Shame, and Straw Dogs(1971) over the weekend.

Contagion was good, but a little too sprawling. Maybe would have worked better as a miniseries.

Shame was very very good. Michael Fassbender got robbed of an Oscar nom.

Straw Dogs was good, brutal, pretty much exactly what I was expecting / hoping for. First Sam Peckinpah movie I've ever seen!

Watched a bunch of movies this weekend. I finally got around to watching The Avengers and of course, it was great.

Also watched:

7 Year Itch, which I had never seen. Two things I got from that movie. 1, Marilyn Monroe was not really that attractive, and 2, that era had a lot of stuff I didn't expect. The movie was a lot more "blue" than I thought it would be, and had references I didn't expect. It was interesting that he went to a Vegetarian restaurant at one point as well.

Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (American version.) Amazing movie, great story. Everyone should see it. Don't watch it with your parents.

Harvey. My favorite movie of all time. Always good to watch it again.

Honestly I just think that she's pretty meh compared to today's hottie celebs. Or even compared to her contemporaries, like Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor, or Sophia Loren...or...I mean there's a ton of movie women that were hotter.

Plus, that voice, oh god that voice. Nothing turns me off more than a woman who sounds like a six year old. Maybe I just have bad taste.

Ed: She also has the close set beady eyes of a thief.

Ed2: Ok after looking at some more pictures of her she actually is quite attractive. Maybe it was just something about how the movie itself made her look, or how the poor colorization looks in HD.

But I still say she has beady little eyes.
