[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

Hellboy 1 was almost the perfect comic book film. Hellboy two was amazing and had some really great stuff in it, and if they had cut out the weird and creepy relationship between Hellboy and Liz it would have been better than the first. It suffered because of that. In my opinion of course. You are free to have a different opinion, just know it's wrong. ;)

Paranorman

Enjoyed this quite a bit. As LittleKagsin said, the dialogue was great and felt very natural. Animation was very fluid and I was especially impressed by the finale, those who have seen it surely know what I'm talking of. Thoroughly pleased with it and would definitely recommend it, though maybe not for really young kids, there were a few scenes that might be too much for them to handle scarewise.

I was really impressed with the detail they did. You know those scenes where Norman whips his head around fast and it gives a realistic motion blur? You can't do that in stop motion because your snapping individual frames. So how did they do it?

They built smeared faces to fake it.

That's just absolutely amazing. How would you even think of something like that?

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

I admit it, I'm a sucker for impressive visuals. And Tim Burton rarely disappoints in that respect. The vibrant, realistic colours of Benjamin Barker's happy days, followed by the bleached-out world and characters of the present, even the sugar high-inducing bright colours of Mrs Lovett's fantasies, you gotta hand it to the man, he knows how to play with the atmosphere of his films. Music... well, it's pretty forgettable, but some of the over-the-top interpretations are just a pleasure to watch, as are Johnny Depp's duets with Alan Rickman. You can just see that Sweeney wants to go Medieval on his nemesis's ass. As for Johanna and Anthony... meh, beyond the juxtaposition of Anthony's love song with Sweeney's butchery there's hardly anything worth considering in the love affair.

Brave

I went expecting this film to suck, based on how much people were saying it did. But I liked it, particularly 'cause I chose to see the English-language original and not the Finnish dub. What's the point of going to see a movie set in Scotland if ye cannae 'ear 'em speak like Craig Ferguson? But of course my judgement may be impaired because of my love of all things Irish and Celtic.

The problem with Brave was all the pointless scenes and the lack of "locations".
The whole "I fight for my own hand!" scene was completely useless and ate up a quarter of the film. The "we should let it be chosen by love and not battle" was a good concept but never realized. They also had a bad habit of rubberbanding: We're at the castle. Now we're in the woods with the magic stonehenge. Now we're at the castle again, whoops back to stonehendge oh and now back to the castle.... forgot something at stonehendge brb.... and now we're at the castle.

I posted that in the upcoming movies thread and nobody cared. :(
This is the first time this technique has been done in stop motion, but its been used in 2D pretty much since the beginning. Really, it's kind of surprising that it hasn't been used in stop motion before. Stop Motion is normally done with every frame in focus, which looks weird to the human eye. This fixes that and smooths out the movement by replicating motion blur. And it's the biggest reason I want to check this movie out.

Apocalypse

While channel surfing, I came across with this film, showing on a Christian TV channel. Pretty much looked and felt like Left Behind, only with even more wooden acting and even bigger heaping piles of holier-than-thou. I couldn't watch this even out of academic interest or unintentional comedy, the acting was that bad. Hell, I've seen porn with better acting.

Are you seriously saying that Drag Me To Hell is better than the Evil Dead movies?
Sure. The Evil Dead flicks are great, schocky B-Movies but Drag Me to Hell and Spiderman 2 are "better" films overall. That doesn't have anything to do with which are more "enjoyable". Thats all about personal taste.
This board tends to forget that "better" does not always mean "I liked it more/You should like it more".

The new Transformers cartoon might be "better" in every way over the original, but I'll be damned if I could ever like it more than the original Transformers. Does that make sense? Can we put away our nerd pitchforks now? :p

If I had to rank Raimi's films I would do it like this:
1) A Simple Plan (Seriously, see this people. No one has seen his best film. My Storyboard prof made us watch this several times.)
2) Evil Dead Trilogy (I can't really decide which one I like best.)
3) Drag me to Hell
4) Spiderman 2
5) Spiderman

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Pretty funny premise, admittedly: a parody of film noirs with Steve Martin as the private eye, with additional characters being played by clips from old film noirs. Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Laughton, etc. The dialogue is a bit stilted from time to time because of this, but there's some pretty funny moments as well. Worth a watch.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Two conmen, a suave British gentleman womanizer played by Michael Caine and an American charlatan played by Steve Martin, going mano a mano for the right to stay and con ladies in the French Riviera. Damn funny, with constant twists and turns and both actors putting their best foot forward.

Just watched American Beauty on YouTube (great upload version btw: )

Man, I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but it's a really great take on life.

I've been trawling through my TiVo lately, watching movies that I taped during the summer...

Empire of the Sun
The story of a British kid living through the Japanese occupation of China during WWII. Pretty interesting and touching at times, showing the war through the juvenile gaze.

A Few Good Men
Third time I've watched this film, and I still keep loving it. It kinda makes me sad Tom Cruise went so batshit crazy, because in this movie he just delivers it along with Jack Nicholson's downright terrifying portrayal of Colonel Nathan Jessep. You want the truth? This movie fuckin' rocks.

Fierce Creatures
The cast of A Fish Called Wanda - oddball Kevin Kline, surprisingly seductive Jamie Lee Curtis, stiff-upper-lip John Cleese and always enjoyable Michael Palin - get together again about a film involving an American megacorporation, a British zoo and its human and animal inhabitants, bottom line vs experience, and misunderstanding involving two half-naked women and a sheep in a hotel bed. It's got British humor, it's got American humor, it got me laughing my ass off.

My Cousin Vinny
Two Italian-American kids (one of them played by Ralph Macchio) from New York end up accused of murder in a small Alabama town, and Macchio calls in his lawyer cousin Vinny (played by Joe Pesci) to represent them. A Few Good Men this ain't, but there's some really funny moments in this film, and Marisa Tomei is hot as hell as Vinny's fiancée.

Predator 2
Watched Predator last week, and the sequel is just as enjoyable if you are looking for decent action and the predator stalking various cops and gangbangers in the urban jungle. It doesn't hurt that I honestly consider the predator one of my most favourite aliens, and just about the only reason I watched those fuckin' awful AVP movies. I wanted to see them own some xenomorph ass!

Day of the Dead
Still holds up. Still my favourite of the Romero zombie movies. Love the soundtrack, and even the makeup and special effects still look pretty good, really. Savini rules.

Shaun of the Dead
Guess I'm on a bit of a zombie binge after finishing reading "Dead of Night" and stumbling across Zombieland on TV when I visited home two weeks ago. It's been a shockingly long time since I watched Shaun of the Dead, but I still love everything about it. Such a great movie.

And to blow your mind... Marisa Tomei won the OSCAR for that role... seriously WTF.

You should watch Doghouse if you haven't already. A fantastic little zombie horror/comedy flick.

Let's be honest, the people behind Oscar decisions aren't exactly known for making great decisions. Tomei pulls a nice, funny role in My Cousin Vinny, I am not going to dispute that. But Oscar material... yeah, no.

Oh man, I gots to find me that on DVD. Seriously, I am a frickin' huge fanboy for Simon Pegg.

Let's be honest, the people behind Oscar decisions wouldn't know a good film if it kicked them in the groin.

It's easy to find now. I got it for Christmas the year it came out. Now you can find it and Hot Fuzz on one disc for like ten bucks.

Sorry, I just saw this.

It's weird and creepy because he has no lips.
And he's a (half) demon.
And they are different species.
And he has the maturity of a 14 year old.
And because it is.
For a moment I thought you were talking about Twilight...

I disagree. Marisa Tomei gave a really great, crackling performance in My Cousin Vinny. I rail and rage against dramatic performances getting the default win all the time over really great, funny performances. She completely deserved that Oscar, and it was a rare time I think the Oscars got it right.

Also, I really really love My Cousin Vinny. My friend's dad that's been a lawyer / judge for his whole life would always proclaim how it's the only movie that actually gets courtroom stuff accurately. I know that doesn't automatically make it a good movie by any stretch, but it's just another fun little wrinkle. It's a really good script, and Pesci is just as good as he is in Goodfellas.

Totally agree. Her performance was stellar, and displayed a mastery of the craft. I think she totally deserved it.

Oh, I completely agree that it was a solid performance. I just found it more than a tad surprising she won an Oscar for it.
Wasn't there some kind of mess up at the awards ceremony? I don't remember the whole details, but it was something like the person reading the nominees had misplaced the envelope with the winners name and Tomei was the only name he could remember.

I'm not even sure how much of that is even true, if at all.

Huh. Okay, thanks Drifter.

Meanwhile...

Freaks (1932)

Really interesting movie. From a filmmaking perspective, it's not fantastic. But from a conceptual perspective, it's amazing. Most interestingly is that the filmmaker used actual circus "freaks" or other people with physical oddities. It's one of those things where you're so used to today's modern special effects that you're looking for the creases in the make-up, the strings, or the green screen. But no, there really is a guy in the movie with just an upper torso walking around with gloves on his hands.

This movie was really controversial back in the day. Today, the trope of "we are the monsters" has been done to death and the "freaks getting revenge on the bully" just as much. I grew up on shows like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and Tales from the Crypt, so this movie felt very familiar. But then, this movie was one of the originators of those tropes. I can certainly see why it was so controversial.

Saw Dark Knight Rises the other week. Not as good as the Dark Knight, but I feel it's a great ending to the series. And if Warner Brothers makes a fourth movie- I SHALL REIGN DOWN NERDY VENGEANCE THE LIKES THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN SEEN!
