Only a week ago, I saw him being mentioned on a forum and looked him up in Wikipedia. Really crappy that he died now.

MSNBC - Top Story
Fox - Has it on the crawl but their top story is how the Cash for Clunkers sucks and that colleges are getting ready for H1N1.

But he is a US Senator that got away with murder so yes sad faces all around.

What the crap?

Get over it. That was 1969. If all you guys have is Chappaquiddick then he must have done some good since then. :pud:

Actually this is major news, not political discussion. Of course, it could get there very, very fast.

With Ted Kennedy as the subject? I don't see how.

I see your Chappaquiddick and raise you Dick "I love torture" Cheney.

Your high horse has no legs, asshole.

(and that's all I've got to say about that)

Teddy was asking that Mass amend the law so a new senator could be appointed quickly if anything happened to him last week, so it looks like he really knew he was at the end.

It's sad - not too many politicians really fought as hard for people as he did.

And maybe the news will shut up about Michael Jackson for a while. I doubt that, though.

Its the top story on all 3 websites. Though, its kinda similar to when Jack Kemp died, Fox New was the only one that gave him the big headline.

No, but it's the one sure thing that the right is going to bring up today. Just like Byrd's KKK "past" is all they have on him.

That's nothing more than political positioning. It was his own push that made it so the Governor couldn't appoint a Senator in the first place, so that Mitt Romney (R - MA) couldn't appoint a Republican Senator if John Kerry won the 2004 Election.

Yeah, Good Morning America only waited 30 minutes before bringing up Chappaquiddick. I think they waited a day before talking about Micheal Jackson's legal troubles with children.

Major news about a politician. It should have been in the political subforum, if we're going to sequester that all off to spare the eyes of the poor, fragile non-political posters.

Rest in peace, Teddy, son of a prohibition bootlegger, Harvard exam cheat, dedicated nepocrat, coat-tail rider of JFK, Hero of chappaquiddick, drunk, enabler of rapists, cosponsor of No Child Left Behind, warrior against individualism, sand in the political gears. Rest assured, your compatriots will name the health care bill after you to further attempt to ramrod it and stifle any opposition.

Are you going to drive to MA and dance on his grave after he is buried?

Look, I chose to put it here because it was about a man who died that was a politician. It's no different than when Michael Jackson died- that doesn't go in Media Madness.

All of you who are turning this into a big political bitch fest make me a little sad. A man who spent his life serving society even after his brothers had been assassinated has passed away.

Go ahead though. Be petty. it shows your colors.

Did it get changed? Because if so, that basically allows Massachusetts to give the Senate seat to someone who will rollover for the next Kennedy. I really wish that whole family would die and go away.

Are you going to drive to MA and dance on his grave after he is buried?
Look through this scanning/tunneling electron microscope and you can see something that is about the size of my care for the respect you or any other forumgoer holds for me. No, I won't be dancing on his grave, I'll be one of the millions trying for generations to undo the damage he has wrought on this country, which leaves too little time for such fleeting indulgences.

Look, I chose to put it here because it was about a man who died that was a politician. It's no different than when Michael Jackson died- that doesn't go in Media Madness.

That you equate Michael Jackson and Ted Kennedy goes far to illustrate the inanity and immaturity of your political thought process. "They say the evil that men do lives after them, and the good is interred with their bones," ... Teddy's going to be lonely in there.

I really wish that whole family would die and go away.
Well, given the mortal condition, it's an inevitability, but only after the damage has been done. I'm just glad we dodged the bullet when Teddy tried to foist his neice upon us.

Pretty weak, Gas. All around pretty weak. Dude served 9 terms as a Senator and that's all you got?

Obviously he didn't learn that. He learned that he can always get forgiveness because of who he was born to.

The guy walked back to his hotel and went to bed. Never thought to call the cops, or I dunno, an ambulance? For the woman he left to drown in his car? And of course, his family connections get him off the hook with a slap on the wrist.

Bipartisanship is part of what is wrong with the current political situation. And frankly, shame on Bush as well for that little piece of legislation as well. Bipartisanship is the enemy of our nation. If you had 5 men and a woman stranded on a desert island and a vote was passed to remove her right to consent, it would be called bipartisan.

See above again, and this is taken from a direct quote where Kennedy said that "we are engaged in a war against individualism" and he wasn't meaning that was a bad thing. What made it even more WTF-ish was he brought this up in a speech to congratulate the New England Patriots on their super bowl victory.

I would absolutely understand if you did move it. I'm just sad we couldn't have one thread on a political figure dying that doesn't become a sad statement about how inconsiderate we are of other people.

#53

Andromache

i dunno. I've always found insisting on forcing the general public to mourn a popular figure because that person was important a little thought policed. I mean, I'm a very liberal dem, and I don't really care that he died. Because you know, I didn't know him.

and his public life makes him a target for opponents. I think the idea of faked sympathy or mourning is a bit vomit-inducing.

I think insulting a dead person is rude, but I also think folks go a bit over-board memorializing public figures.

I know I was upset by a professor that spew all sorts of hate (in class) when Reagan died. I think GB pushed it, too. However, getting into a flame war about whether a politician is or isn't a scumbag is folly anyway.

#60

Zappit

Zappit

Oh, boy. I remember the last time we had the "etiquette regarding death news" fight - it wasn't pretty.

I'm in the give 'em respect for the immediate future, but let the legacy define the deceased, but let the legacy define their place in the history books.

Yes, we all know about Chappaquiddick, but maybe the guy was really trying to make up for past sins. He did do good, being a champion of health care reform. And GB, if you want a more specific example, try this.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/08/26/littlest.refusenik.kennedy/index.html

Ya take the good with the bad, but it all gets remembered by someone.

A nine term senator whose vote effected pretty much every federal law passed in the last forty years in some way is rather more important in terms of recognition than most joes off the street. That's my opinion anyway.

I have to disagree with this. I provide reasoned arguments all the time but he doesn't want reasoned arguments, he wants to stir shit up a bit. You can tell by the glee in his posts when he snags a liberal frothing at the mouth. The frothier the better.

Seriously. Celebrating someone's death is reprehensible except in rare circumstances (aka Hitler). It shows a disgusting side of humanity. I remember in college when Reagan died the local hippie house threw a party. I got really drunk and went there and started fights. Surprisingly, they were all pussies. Not sure where that story was going...

Oh yeah, even though I disagree with a lot of what Reagan did, he didn't deserve that. Very few people do. Like Hitler, and ironically Jesus (cause, you know, he died for our sins....)
