The Beer Thread

Krisken

Krisken

Ok, so after trying what is quite possibly the most insane beer I've ever put my hands on, I felt the desire to create a thread dedicated to beer. What are your favorite beers? Do you avoid certain beer types? I'll start this off...

I love Founders. I don't think I've had a Founders beer I didn't like, and generally I tend toward the darker beers. Today, though, I think I've been defeated by a stout from another company. I never thought it was possible, but Goose Island's 2012 Bourbon County Stout my have destroyed my perceptions on what a beer can be. This isn't something you pour into a glass when you have plans for the day, let me tell ya! This may very well be the best beer I've ever had.

Until I tried one from my ancestral homeland.

I too am a Smithwick's fan. Which is somewhat problematic consumption-wise, since there's about one or two places in my city that sells the stuff. Otherwise I'm not a fan of beer; most of the varieties I've had tasted like water where someone had emptied an ashtray.

Belgian beer is the bomb, I have no idea why it's not as famous as their chocolate (okay maybe because not everyone drinks alcohol/beer. After trying it though they will :p). La Chouffe and Pauwel Kwak are amongst my favorite. During a warm summer's day though, white beer (or a.k.a. wheat beer) like the Weihenstephaner is amazing

I've only recently started drinking beers, and I've been on an active quest to find one I actually enjoy, trying a different one each time I go out. Not a lot of luck so far, I've tried Corona, Newcastle, Dos Equis (which I THOUGHT I liked at first but I was already fairly drunk on stronger liquor before drinking, then didn't like it the next time I tried it sober), Shocktop, Guinness, and a couple other various ones whose names I can't remember and none of them do it for me. The only drinks I actually enjoy the taste of so far are non-beers like Smirnoff Ice.

I never really liked beer. Then I met this beauty when we were in CA. I'd love to be able to get it here. (and yes I realize it should be tripel ;-) ) I also have a Rogue Chocolate Stout sitting in the fridge so I can try it. I've heard good things about it.

I've found some decent wheat beers lately, and some not so decent wheat beers, but I have a couple friends who introduced me to Church Key beer, a brand of beer that's actually sold in the old style cans that require a church key to open. It's a pretty nice beer, goes down smooth, isn't bitter, little bit hard to find though.

If it's a good enough bread, sure. I could always go for more ways to enjoy a good, dark, peasant bread. Especially since the ability to bake such a bread currently eludes me.

The batch this year is bigger than in years past, so you might be able to get a hold of it. However, it's $20 for a pack of 4. Still, well worth it. Just be sure you have a clear afternoon to drink it as it is 15% abv.

For me beer is very mood dependent. I like all kinds, but they have to fit the situation. Obviously I don't have access to the US/Canadian microbrew industry, so rather I take to the Belgians (Chimay, Leffe, Duvel, Palm, LaChouffe), although I do like a Guinness every now and then. Over the summer I've also taken to whitebeers, which previously I just sort of wrote off as boring but they're actually quite nice.

Interesting fact: in the Middle Ages it was commonplace in many parts of Europe that people drank up to a gallon and a half of beer a day, simply due to the fact that water was sometimes undrinkable. And when I say people, I mean everybody from children to adults to old people.

In other words, in the Middle Ages everyone was drunk as shit.

Yes, it introduces me to the next Guinness.

#41

I've heard great things about Guinness... as long as you don't live in the US. Rumor has it that the stuff you can get imported here and the stuff you can get outside the US are vastly different products. I really hope this is the case, because last time I tried Guinness (which was admittedly a long time ago before I had really developed a taste for any beer) it tasted like pine sap on tap.

#42

I was in the US, Miami I believe, I asked for a Guinness and they brought me a can of guinness.

So most Americana opinion on beers in general is "meh" IMO along with what they make domestically.

Interesting fact: the beer and whine of the Middle Ages had roughly 1-2% alcohol content, making it considerably weaker than modern spirits. It was merely a practical way to keep water clean for consumption.

In other words, people weren't drunk as often as you think.

True, but there's the simple matter of quantity to consider. Also, in the Late Middle Ages and the beginning of the New Age, getting hammered was considered something of a cultural norm in Northern Europe, even among the aristocracy. In fact, there are mentions of foreign dignitaries visiting Sweden in the 1500s and bemoaning how the Swedes refused to treat with them because they refused to drink 'til they dropped.

There are some great American brewers. Stone makes some great stuff, especially if you like IPAs or Porters. AleSmith is pretty fantastic, too. I'm also a fan of Sam Adams, not so much the Boston Lager but the seasonal stuff is delicious.

American Guinness is brewed in Canada. So it is still an "import" just not from the right factory.

#54

Snuffleupagus

Snuffleupagus

My wife bought me a case of Guinness foreign extra for our anniversary this year.

That said, the Guinness served in America is the same stuff served in Ireland. I asked the brewery tour guide in Ireland a couple years ago. Though he also said that it doesn't travel well and they get the same question from anyone outside of Ireland who doesn't get it as "fresh". I would also guess American bars and bartenders aren't paying as much attention to the proper pour, temperature, CO2 levels and line cleanliness as the people whose only focus is Guinness.

#55

Krisken

Right, Snuff. Which is why I keep comparing bottles, not tap. Most of the time, being in the non-metropolitan area that I am, I can really only get bottled (nothing is good canned, don't even say it) beers.

Hell, I had a Guinness tonight, but only because the bar didn't have any Founders on tap this month.

And Mill Street:

I know nobody asked, but here's my opinion:
For it's price, Brava is quite good. It is far from a favourite of mine, but for a cheap beer for a party, Brava is a good buy. Honestly prefer it over some of the sort of mid-range stuff like Molson Canadian (Which I find disgusting nowadays), and it's better than all of it's peers in the cheap category like Laker, Lakeport and Maclays.

Mill Street Organic and Mill Street Coffee Porter are delicious. Not a fan of their Tankhouse Ale.

And Keith's is Keith's. It's good, but honestly I feel like it's maybe a little overpriced, at least here in Ontario where it's considered an import. It's probably cheaper in the Maritimes where our Ontario beers are jacke dup in price.
I rarely buy it. For pretty much the same price I can get Rickard's, coming from BC, and I consider Rickard's Red to be an excellent beer. It's my preferred beer at hockey and la crosse games.[DOUBLEPOST=1351349478][/DOUBLEPOST]

That was the beauty of the raspberry beer I had that one time, lo those many moons ago. It wasn't sweet. If anything, it was a little tart, and had a beautiful ruby color that was only slighter redder than a good red ale. It was like a really good Hefeweizen with just a slight hint of raspberry flavor almost as an after-aroma instead of the slight citrusiness that you sometimes get. Alas, when I went back to the same pub to get it a second time a few years ago, it sucked ass.

Ok, got some really good beers today, almost all bombers. I had Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout earlier, and it was fairly tasty. Sweeter than I expected, more of a milk chocolate beer taste than the usual dark chocolate stouts I've had. Yet to be tried (but still supposedly good) I have Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer Imperial American Stout, Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout, and Hoppin Frog B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Oatmeal-Imperial Stout. Looking forward to these over the next few weeks!

Samuel Smith makes some good stuff. It's a bit pricey and generally only comes in a big bottle or a 4-pack, though. I really like Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Sucks that it comes in a can, but if you empty it into a pint glass it's a smooth heaven.

I actually found Young's in bottles a few times. Cans really are awful and leave a tinny taste to the beer, which is a shame.

I don't notice the tinny flavor with Young's, likely because it's thick enough to have it's own gravitational pull.

You think that's thick, stay away from the whiskey aged stuff.

Drinking the Hoppin Frog B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Oatmeal-Imperial Stout. YUM! Nice to find another Oatmeal Stout I can enjoy!

Well Roger Wilco was out of Bitburger, that kinda sucks. Had to settle for Rolling Rock. At least its in a glass bottle so its at least palatable.

I think I've mentioned it before, but if you're in the market for a good, refreshing whitebeer, You'll want to try some of this:

Orange slice is optional, but not at all out of place.

Optional, eh?

Finished some horrible tests, now celebrating with a Founders Breakfast Stout. Be jealous.

Couple things. First, I tried an oatmeal stout from Trader Joes, and it was really good.

Second, and this may signify that I have absolutely no taste, but on a whim I decided to try mixing coconut water and the lager I've got. It's a really good mix. At least I think so.

Sam Adams winter ale sucks major D.

Dogfish Heads' Indian Brown Ale is a pretty good brew though. If you like your beer dark and a little sweet.

Which is sad since their cream stout was FANTASTIC. They should just discontinue everything else and make the Cream Stout every year.
