The Beer Thread

Ok, so after trying what is quite possibly the most insane beer I've ever put my hands on, I felt the desire to create a thread dedicated to beer. What are your favorite beers? Do you avoid certain beer types? I'll start this off...

I love Founders. I don't think I've had a Founders beer I didn't like, and generally I tend toward the darker beers. Today, though, I think I've been defeated by a stout from another company. I never thought it was possible, but Goose Island's 2012 Bourbon County Stout my have destroyed my perceptions on what a beer can be. This isn't something you pour into a glass when you have plans for the day, let me tell ya! This may very well be the best beer I've ever had.

Not a huge fan of beer...most beer in fact tastes like utter poop to me.

Until I tried one from my ancestral homeland.

I too am a Smithwick's fan. Which is somewhat problematic consumption-wise, since there's about one or two places in my city that sells the stuff. Otherwise I'm not a fan of beer; most of the varieties I've had tasted like water where someone had emptied an ashtray.

Belgian beer is the bomb, I have no idea why it's not as famous as their chocolate (okay maybe because not everyone drinks alcohol/beer. After trying it though they will :p). La Chouffe and Pauwel Kwak are amongst my favorite. During a warm summer's day though, white beer (or a.k.a. wheat beer) like the Weihenstephaner is amazing

I've only recently started drinking beers, and I've been on an active quest to find one I actually enjoy, trying a different one each time I go out. Not a lot of luck so far, I've tried Corona, Newcastle, Dos Equis (which I THOUGHT I liked at first but I was already fairly drunk on stronger liquor before drinking, then didn't like it the next time I tried it sober), Shocktop, Guinness, and a couple other various ones whose names I can't remember and none of them do it for me. The only drinks I actually enjoy the taste of so far are non-beers like Smirnoff Ice.

I never really liked beer. Then I met this beauty when we were in CA. I'd love to be able to get it here. (and yes I realize it should be tripel ;-) ) I also have a Rogue Chocolate Stout sitting in the fridge so I can try it. I've heard good things about it.

I've found some decent wheat beers lately, and some not so decent wheat beers, but I have a couple friends who introduced me to Church Key beer, a brand of beer that's actually sold in the old style cans that require a church key to open. It's a pretty nice beer, goes down smooth, isn't bitter, little bit hard to find though.

Do you want to drink bread? If the answer is yes, then you will LOVE stouts.
If it's a good enough bread, sure. I could always go for more ways to enjoy a good, dark, peasant bread. Especially since the ability to bake such a bread currently eludes me.

Oh man I want to try that. I'll have to find out if I can get that here.
The batch this year is bigger than in years past, so you might be able to get a hold of it. However, it's $20 for a pack of 4. Still, well worth it. Just be sure you have a clear afternoon to drink it as it is 15% abv.

There is something about IPA's I have a hard time enjoying, and I haven't been able to put my finger on it yet. I tend toward stouts, reds, and the occasional lager.

I prefer stouts, reds, and ales myself. Lagers are okay only if there's no better option.

I always have some West-Vleteren lying around the house these days, since my parents moved to the coast and therefore within easy driving distance of the brewery. Still hard to get but easy enough to make it worthwhile :D
That aside, I'm a huge fan of Gueuzes in general, and dark ales.

checkeredhat can attest to it's quality, but I am a fan of Steam Whistle.

Was very upset for the first year that I lived here because they hadn't started shipping over here yet, but they started to a few years back and everything is right with the world.

For me beer is very mood dependent. I like all kinds, but they have to fit the situation. Obviously I don't have access to the US/Canadian microbrew industry, so rather I take to the Belgians (Chimay, Leffe, Duvel, Palm, LaChouffe), although I do like a Guinness every now and then. Over the summer I've also taken to whitebeers, which previously I just sort of wrote off as boring but they're actually quite nice.

Having no real sense of smell doesn't help, and it's possible I'm allergic to the hops used in beer.
