Hi guys.

I can't believe there isn't allready a thread about 3D-Gaming... Has anybody allready tried the Nvidia 3d-Vision technology?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_Main.html

I'll buy a new pc rig in the next months, and I will have a nvidia-setup in order to enjoy full flicker-free, 120hz, stereoscopic 3D in my games, like, fallout 3, need for speed or mass effect...

To view those beautiful, life-like 3d images, I just ordered this baby here:

http://www.taranfx.com/acer-3d-projector

Shit, I'm allmost going out of my mind, waiting for this pc and 3d-beamer rig to arrive...

Imagine, a 3D-effect like avatar 3d (or even better), in your games like fallout 3, assassins creed, half-life etc. etc. etc...

IN A FRIGGIN 80 INCH IMAGE!!!!!!!!! IN 3D!!!!1ONE

funny thing is, the 3D-Movies I watched up to now (Ice Age 3D, Avatar and just tonight Alice in Wonderland) really amazed me. I experienced a really strong effect, imersing in the imagery, it really is... mindboggling for me. That's why I'm really looking forward to play my games like that. :)

I don't like the idea of being locked-in to nVidia (or any company) for 3D. Until 3D displays aren't dependent on a specific companyl, I'm not going to even consider it.

You can actually preview this sort of with nvidia cards 6600 generation and up and a pair of red/cyan glasses. The 3D itself is pretty awsome, but having to invest in a new monitor and the shutter glasses is way too much of an expense. Even with the Red/Cyan, you can see some of the problems that occur in some games with UIs floating out of vision range and in some cases being split. As games are optimized for it, it will be better. For the record, I've been playing Left 4 dead with the 3d effect and my old fasioned red/cyan glasses and it looks awesome, except for the washing out.

So, basically, I'm extremely interested in trying this out when the tech drops in price some.

3D is already specc'd for HDMI, bluray, and TVs, so the 'standard' exists, and we should see TVs, blueray players, etc that support it natively later this year.

End of April, I will recount my experiences I will have made with 3D. By then, I should have playtested the 3D-Vision Concept from Nvidia with a few games, on my 800.-- 3D-Beamer, enjoying flicker-free stereoscopic images on a 60" screen. ;-)

Stay tuned.

Allright then, time to post my experiences with 3D-Gaming@home...

First, yes, I had to spend quite some money, but as I enjoyed a "little" Bonus at work, that wasn't too much of an issue to fulfil my dream...

So, I got myself a nice little PC with an Core i5 processor, 8Gb of ram, bla bla bla and a Nvidia GTX 285 Graphics card. To this, I added the 3D Vision kit with a pair of extra glasses for my Girlfriend. And to get the most of it, I went for the Acer H5360 720p 3D-ready beamer. Combined with a cheap Logitech Sourround Setup and a selfmade 60" Screen for the PJ, that gave me this, for a Price of about 2800 $:

Now, for the games themselves...

I'm totally and utterly mindblown. Honestly, in the 20 something years of my gaming-career, I never experienced such immersive and real gaming.

I got Assassins Creed 1, Need for Speed Shift, Prince of Persia 2008, GTA IV, Fallout 3 and Just Cause 2. Except Just Cause 2, the games were rather Cheap, around 10 to 15 Bucks each.

Except Just Cause 2, which is optimized for 3D Vision, the games weren't specifically programmed for 3D-Vision, but guess what:

AC1, NFSS, PoP work flawlessyl out of the Box, GTA IV, F3 need minor tweaking and look gorgeous. And Just Cause 2 plays in a leage of it's own.

The effect on the 60" Screen is - literally - mindblowing. It is really like you are IN the game and not only watching. For example, as I accidentaly shot a dagger in my direction in AC1, I actually had to duck, because the dagger was flying right in to my face.

The games worlds really open to an additional layer of real depth, it's like looking out of a window into "the real world". Add to this a pop-out effect, i.e. the above mentioned dagger... But you can set the settings like this, that for example altair or rico (in just cause 2) really pop out of the screen, and the foreground between you and your avatar comes out of the screen...

It's difficult to explain, it really is something that has to be experienced to be believed.

But be warned: Stereoscopic 3D, unfortunately, is not for everyone. My brother, for example, cannot watch it, he becomes dizzy after one minute looking at it, but me and two friends of mine, played for hours without any negative symptoms. So before you decide to dive into this new level of gaming, check out whether you belong to those unlucky 20% who have problems watching s3d.

My conclusion: For me, it's a revolutionary step in gaming, comparable to the evolution of gaming from 16bit 2D-Gaming to the first playstation - or even a bigger step.

If you can afford it, and don't have medical problems watching s3d: Go for it, you wan't be coming back to "regular" gaming.

Take the wife to Cancun....3D gaming.

Hmmm....

I actually tried the 3D system at BlizzCon. I was really impressed by it, but I plan to wait for it to become more mainstream before I invest.

From what I remember, the guy at Kotaku who reviewed this system says it starts to make your head really hurt after 2 or 3 hours.

I was going to try the red-cyan preview, but at the time windows 7 wasn't out and you had to install Vista to use it, so I was like "screw that noise."

Looks like you have yourself a nice set up and are really enjoying the games. Is there any movement towards bring this to current consoles?

Also; :( I thought this thread was going to be about affordable pin-ball machines.

As far as I know, Sony plans a firmware-update for the PS3 to enable stereoscopic 3D this summer, so yes, even the current-gen consoles should get their load of s3d... And 3D-BluRay. But I don't know yet, whether this will work with the Acer h5360 Beamer and other 3D-capable monitors/tvs/pj or Sony-only tvs...

You can actually get the 3D experience for WAY cheaper than Andi paid. If you already have a decent graphics card, basically all you need to upgrade is your monitor and get the glasses.

Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ 120 Hz LCD display Is available on New Egg for 299.00 and is fully 3d compatible.

Then all you need is the glasses

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814998031&Tpk=3d%20vision%20glasses for 199.00

So you can do it at a fraction of the cost listed above.

QFT.

Yep, that's completely true. Any nvidia Graphics Card up from a GeForce 8800 can run Nvidias 3D-vision. Looky here for specifications: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_Requirements.html . If you allready HAVE a PC with a corresponding Graphics-Card, you "just" need a 3D-Vision ready Monitor/TV/beamer (which can handle a 120hz input-signal) and the 3D-Vision set.

As I didn't have a pc (I switched from mac back to win-pc), I just went the whole way building a powerful setup from the ground. In the beginning, I opted for the cheaper monitor-solution, but as I found out about the 3D-ready PJs... Well, the prospect of a big fucking screen displaying 3D-Images made me go the full way for this setup... This and the before mentioned bonus at work in the height of 3000 $... ^^

About the headache-issue: I guess that's a very subjective matter. As I mentioned, my brother has medical problems with his eyes, so he cannot even stand 2 minutes watching stereo 3d (he couldn't even watch Avatar 3D in cinemas). Me, on the other hand, had allready had marathon sessions of up to 4h at a time with just cause 2 without any symptoms... As I mentioned before: If you considering going stereo 3d, it's best to test it to find out whether you suffer any symptoms or not.

Edit: Also, I guess you can soon enjoy s3d also on ATI-Graphic cards. With the Catalyst Driver 10.3, ATI implemented stereo 3d for their graphics card, although they don't offer the corresponding 3D-shutter glasses by them selves, but let 3d-parties develop and sell them.
