I don't know how you can cram all these heroes into a movie and keep it at a reasonable running time, and keep the plot interesting too.
They won't be doing origins, as all the members will have had their own origin film + sequel when Avengers hits the theatres.[/QUOTE]And with Nick Fury as a character inking all the movies, you've got an instant team origin.

why would we count the Young avengers anyway?! It's the first ever Avengers movie, guys. Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man. If they start adding all the spin-offs and shit it'd have to be a 7 hour long movie.
While you're right about Stature having no chance of hitting silver screens in the near future, she IS a member of the Mighty Avengers, one of the most Avengery Avengers teams published today. Also, as far as movie characters go....you left out Black Widow. I'd imagine she'll take Wasp's place as a founding member for a movie.

EDIT: According to Variety, Whedon will also be reworking the script. This is good, as Whedon does ensembles like nobody's business. Still not sure about putting him in the director's chair.

I liked Marvel's Incredible Hulk and Marvel's Iron Man. Marvel's Iron Man 2 looks like it will be another winner. They understand how to translate a comic into an enjoyable film so until they put out a piece of garbage I'm behind them regardless of who is at the helm. I think Joss will do a great job with the movie.

It's interesting to hear that Whedon will direct, but it makes me a tad nervous. I had heard about his ideas for a Wonder Woman film and it was sounding terrible. He said he had never read the comics and wasn't really going to read them, he would have created his own villain, it was all sounding bad. As long as he follows someone else's script, I'll be fine with this.

Now see, I'd heard that Kathryn "Academy Award Winning Hurt Locker" Bigelow was in the running.

I had kind of hoped she would get this, instead.

For as good as Whedon is, he's not really all that big of a seller. FOX screws him over more than polygamist who says his wife is the only one and his movies (well, movie) are not big sellers. He's an internet darling for quirky but starting to recycle itself writing. Seriously, you can almost smell a beloved character death a mile away. He might have gotten screwed by FOX, but his shows keep getting cancelled, regardless.

That said, I think if he gave us something more in-line with his run of Astonishing X-Men, then I think we might have a winner.
Now there's something worth mentioning. I really liked Astonishing X-men perhaps whedon doing marvel is not a bad thing eh? Personally, I'd be optimistic about this anyway. I've yet to watch something by whedon that I didn't like. Though dollhouse was pretty weird but it wasn't bad.

But it was pretty damned wierd.

Writing a comic and directing a film are vastly, totally, completely different. They are not even in the same zip code.

Whedon reworking the script is actually a really good thing, I think. Now, I did say I'm not a fan of Whedon's work as a writer, which to me is a bit too self-consciously clever, but as has been said, he does ensembles really well. On top of that, that Whedon's work as a script doctor has been really good, so this seems like a really good move.

You know, I would have never though J.F. was a good choice to direct Iron Man but he blew that out of the park, with Whedons history I'm willing to give Marvel the benefit of a doubt here. Like SS said up there, he does ensembles well and lord knows thats what they need for this movie, someone who gets group dynamics and won't make it WOLVERINE (and the xmen).

I mean, everything up to release date will be blowing smoke around here. I, too, will just wait. But it doesn't make me excited, per say.

As the AVClub always notes--and I explicitly steal from--I remain cautiously optimistic.

Well of course there not the same thing. I didn't mean to imply that they were- My point is that whedon, at the very least, knows his way around the marvel Universe, and if astonishing X-men is any clue, he'll present them in a way that is true to the characters. Which is good for me, a comic fan, but for a movie fan the point is kind of moot.
