Trail by Fire - A case against the death penalty

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/09/07/trial-by-fire

This article is a little old, but it goes into incredible detail about a case where a man was convicted of murdering his children and eventually put to death by a system that didn't give a shit whether he was actually guilty or not. I'll go full Charlie and say fuck the death penalty. It's fucking terrible.

I've always felt this way about it. If there's even the slightest chance an innocent man would be put to death, then it shouldn't fucking happen.

If there is anything, ANYTHING, that makes me say fuck Texas, it is this. The near-glee with which Rick Perry refused to reconsider the case is downright sickening. You'd think he gets off on executions.

The USA will continue to stand with every evil 3rd world dictatorship that we condemn for human rights violations and keep murdering its own citizens with their racist, ineffective prison industrial complex.

You're not getting off that easy, Charlie. This was Texas, and Texas alone. And that includes you. The blood is on your hands, not mine.

hahahhaahah what? I dunno if you're serious, but Texas isn't the only state that executes people like this. I also have never voted for Rick Perry

But Texas is the one state that has fetishized executions.

Not voting for Perry doesn't absolve you, or any Texan. It just means you didn't do enough to rid yourselves of the bastard when you had the chance.

I THINK HE'S JOKING
No. No, I'm not. Because if anything ever exposed Perry as nothing but a walking shitstain, it was this. And the people of Texas stood by and let it happen. And then they kept reelecting the asshole.

And there's nothing I can do but ask why. Why did you let him do this? Why didn't someone, anyone, do more to stop him? And after all the times he made Texas a laughingstock, why the ever loving fuck did you keep reelecting him?

WV may have it's own deep, dark hole to climb out of, but at least we don't have Rick Perry as the face of our state.

People think the exact same way about the United States under Bush. Do you think you have the Iraqi / Afghani peoples' blood on your hands?

You've got just as much, if not more. It's Texas' fault we got him, too.
Hmm, investigative journalism needed. The Bushes, executions, textbooks, patent lawsuits...just how much of the USA's trouble is TX responsible for? Do we need an infographic?

Oh, yes. Please.

And a big batch of popcorn for the rest of us while Charlie and/or GB dispute every last bit of it. :)

I don't have any super affinity to Texas, I haven't even lived here more than 5 years or so. Also, this is a fucking moronic argument, but for the record, I wasn't even in Texas or voting age when W was Governor

DarkAudit, your paint brush is a bit too broad. So, everyone in WV is enlightened right? You didn't advise Obama on what to do, you just voted for him. You do understand how that works right? It's obvious that you have a kung-fu grip on justice and human rights. Why don't you go fix Texas? Do something about it internet tough guy. Jesus.

It's sad that people who are so emotionally against the death penalty can turn around and treat a fetus as trash tissue and endorse abortion for convenience.

Also, steak should be cooked WELL DONE.

:minionhappy:
It's sad that you think that people who are pro-choice think that fetus' are just trash tissue and are totally for abortions of convenience.

It's sad that we waste so much energy needlessly on these three separate arguments.

Put an abortion clinic, a death row chamber on one end of a conveyor, and attach a Carl's Jr. on the other. At least be economical about the whole thing.

Nuke from orbit. The only way to be sure. We'd be rid of Texas, and Texas would be rid of us. Win-win.

Does this mean that we should nuke WV from orbit to get rid of the chemical company that dumped all of those chemicals in the river? What did you personally do to prevent that from happening again? I mean, aside from spamming twitter with opinions about how horrible the company was and how bad coal is? Why haven't you stopped the state from re-electing coal loving politicians?

Just about every Texan I've asked on the subject detests and would love to get rid of Rick Perry, if only there had been some way to do that OTHER than by electing a democrat.

This thread is confusing.

But what I'm taking away from it us CDS loves Rick Perry and executing innocent abortions.

In May of this year, a guy went on a stabbing spree on a Taipei MRT train, and then continued his attack when the train reached the next station. He killed four people, and wounded 24 more. There are many witnesses, CCTV footage from the MRT stations, and cell phone videos from passengers on the train. He also readily confessed to his crime, as well as his motive (he's disillusioned with life and wanted to go out with a bang). There's also clear evidence that this attack was carefully planned, ie it was premeditated.

There's widespread social pressure in Taiwan for this guy to get the death penalty. In such a case, where there can be no doubt about his guilt, is it okay to kill him?

Do it. Just fucking do it. It would make things a whole hell of a lot easier. No more worries about how we were going to get sold out again. 30 years of pain and rage will be over.

And fuck you if twitter spam is all you think it is.
