Video Game News and Miscellany

Nomura was moved to KH3 explicitly to get it done in a timely manner. I suspect it'll be 2 years away and FF15 will hit the year after because it'll look better on the books that way.
I keep seeing talk of a FFXV demo in 2015 though. I can't see that if they don't intend to release it until 2017. In fact, I don't think Square-Enix can afford to put it off to 2017.

Not exactly my favorite timeline genre.. but it doesn't look terrible. Though I'm not a fan of real-time combat like that.

But a better look will be needed whenever a proper demo is out.

Classic Jay will say, "Watch this be FUBARED by some peasant gimmick idea that will make combat SUCK" (aka last few games)

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm fine running around dodging, bashing, casting spells, etc, but if it's like Final Fantasy XII with the gambit system, no way am I touching it.

Was I the only person who LOVED the gambit system? It at least didn't trivialize the game like the Junction or Ability systems did.

I actually really liked it because it took the tedium out of grinding, without removing all strategy or input from the game. "Okay, I'm in the ice mountains, everything here absorbs ice, so I need to make sure to turn off ice magic for everyone. *click click* Okay that's done." "Oh, okay, for this fight I need someone to tank, so I'll have them do these actions but not these others, while the other person does this and I keep everyone healed between attacks." It's basically party management streamlined. If you don't have to click, "attack the fucking rabbit" 800 times to gather a loot chain, just go to the right places where they are (and to keep your guys from breaking the chain? Have them only attack targets you designate), it's a lot less annoying.

It was far better than the paradigm system.
Paradigm worked in FFX-2 when it was the Garmet Grid system, but that's because you had complete control over everyone.

I never felt like I was in control; more like I was suggesting what the characters would do as opposed to actually making them do it.
See, but they won't do anything you don't tell them to, ether via gambits or direct control. You literally have to ether tell them to do it or make a gambit for it. They won't even use their weapons without orders. If anything, they lack enough autonomy.

I know, but during battle, it never felt like Command-->Do. It felt more like Command-->Running-->Loading-->Do. It reminded me of regular attacking in World of Warcraft, except for everything. It's unfortunate for me, because people say the story is pretty good, but I couldn't play that battle system for another 70+ hours.

FFXV demo has me strangely intrigued. The interaction between the characters during combat looks surprisingly fluid, and actually looks like they're friends adventuring together. I'm curious if those animations are dynamic, or if it's just canned mini-cutscenes.

*checks game title*
*sees it's called Final Fantasy*

Ahh, I'm guessing mini-cutscenes.

Who? Why is this exciting? Context, please?
Kate Welch used to have a Youtube show called She Geek Show, and I loved her coverage of gaming news and culture. She was kind of a spiritual predecessor to Dodger Leigh (the two are friends, and I think Kate, in part, inspired Dodger to make videos). Kate has also worked in the video game industry, working for the company that makes Guild Wars (I think she did UI design?), and she also did acting for the FMV portions of the indie game Roundabout. Also, she cosplays The Rocketeer quite well.

It's exciting to me because I'm a Kate fanboy. She's a fun person, and she randomly gave me Limbo during a Steam sale because I was one of her fans who had it on their wishlist. It's not big news to anyone but me.

More Square-Enix news:

They've announced a new section of their business that's intended to work on games existing solely in an online cloud a la Amazon digital content and iTunes. I have no idea what they intend to do with this other than saying that it frees their developers from constraints and will be the "first flapost in the final frontier of gaming".

Gee, where have we heard that before? Maybe this is just a thing with Square. They thought mobile gaming was going to be the only thing, so they wanted to jump wholehog into that. Do they never consider what future development can exist? Hell, the title of their main series, Final Fantasy, is indicative of this, as is the fact that we're getting towards the 15th of just the numbered series. In short, Squenix has no idea what they're talking about, as usual.

Also, get a load of the name:

I think the idea of the cloud for this is they want to be able to stream bigger games to phones and tablets because putting a full, modern SE title on one it just not practical. The end game for a lot of developers right now is they want to put current AAA titles on tablets because whoever does it first will make shitloads of money, but memory and processor limitations are keeping everyone down. Enter the cloud: by processing the game on site and simply streaming it to you, they lower the requirements enormously. There was even a company doing this for awhile until it went bankrupt.

Basically... this isn't a terrible idea, but it's not ready. Right now the issue isn't how am I going to play KH3 on a tablet... it's how am I going to do it without a controller.

That explanation does make it sound like a good idea. But after Square-Enix's terrible run with mobile games, I don't see them as being the ones to implement it well.[DOUBLEPOST=1411218530,1411218132][/DOUBLEPOST]Speaking of cloud services: Sony started Playstation Now, their way for you to rent games via streaming. Sounds good--pay less, play through the game, no download. Cool.

Except the prices are asinine. $3-$4 for four hours of rental? That's fucking stupid.

Also, for anyone interested, the 3DS Smash Bros demo is available to everyone now.

Ok, so I like the demo, but I clearly have forgotten how to play Smash bros since I played it on the GC.
That's a good thing, since the controls are pretty different and there have been a lot of tweak in the Brawl era. I had to practice throwing myself off the side to get used to recoveries. It's good training. I had my wife do it a little and she was actually beating me as Link last night.

As for the circle pad stuff, I feel like it's a matter of people who go apeshit on their controllers when they get into an action-heavy game. I'm not like that, but I've known people who have broken PS1 controllers and N64 controllers because they're too into it. That type of person should not play Smash Bros for 3DS.

When did Steam get a music player? It looks like a pretty crappy music player, and I don't think it supports Ogg Vorbis files, but it's there now.

They just did a big steam update. One of the newest big things are 'steam curators' which changes how their store front works, and allows people to become curators to organize the games they most like to recommend.

For example, here is the TB curator page. http://store.steampowered.com/curator/1370293/

Curators do not get paid or compensated, so it's purely a community driven thing.
