Just finished East of West vol 1.

I've read a lot of Hickman, but this is my favorite thing he's done. My only complaint is that I left volume 2 at home so I don't have more to read on my commute.

Just saying, a fez-wearing rich Arabic man with a bunch of wives AIN'T the most progressive supervillain. I was half expecting the aliens from Animal Man to jump in and say "You are outdated, you are not needed in this universe" and then he'd be erased.

I was not entirely taken by the first brief arc for U.S. Avengers, especially since I thought Danielle Cage was going to be a regular cast member ... not the case.

But Al Ewing knows how to have fun, and U.S. Avengers #4 was pretty much a Halloween novel in March for some reason, just a silly weird chapter story starring a mustachioed Red Hulk and a zombified Deadpool. And American Kaiju. It was pretty funny and enjoyable, and hopefully that's the kind of book U.S. Avengers is going forward. Haven't looked at the solicits, so I have no idea what's coming up.

EDIT: And issue #6 is a Secret Empire event tie-in. For a series that has been around for five months at that point.

BUT HEY! Maybe Marvel wants to blame low sales figures on their being non-white people on the team?!!?

That's how I reacted. I thought the first couple issues were great, but after that I started to lose interest, so arc 1 was okay.

Then it suffers from the same thing many post-Secret Wars comics suffer from--the second arc being devoted to Civil War II.

If it wasn't for the backstory and final issue, I wouldn't be bothering with Ms. Marvel's Civil War II trade, but within that event crap, G Willow Wilson sprinkled in a wonderful story that begins with Kamala's pregnant grandmother during the partition of India and Pakistan in the 1940s, and leads up to modern times. Of course to get there you have to either read or flip past Carol Danvers and the Captain Marvel Hitler Youth Club.

Okay I skipped ahead to Gwenpool 13, I kinda like it now-ALTHOUGH-I'm not looking forward to her realizing the obvious twist in that her world is apart of the fictional Marvel universe, NOT the real universe. I just hate waiting for the obvious twist to be revealed, where you don't go "OH SHIT!" but "No, shit". But hey, maybe this fourth wall breaking Superboy Prime can go somewhere.

That's why I was giving you shit; it does change. Whether someone likes it or not YMMV. I read it and like it, but it's really my wife's book and I don't like it enough that I'd be picking it up still if I wasn't buying it for her.

I like this. It's like the Ultimate Marvel idea, only without all the teen angst. Nice to see Peter Kent. I mean Clark Parker. Peter Clarker? Kenter Parker?

Supergirl #8, Superman tells her what happened in Superman Reborn because she only remembers a reality where Clark, Lois, and Jon were always here.

So that's the way it is, I guess. I'm glad Wonder Woman's solo had her immediately get over her New 52 relationship with Supes, cause now it never happened and I don't want her comic getting mucked up by all this.

Aftermath: *goes over Superman's well-known origin story that has never been disputed, largely focusing on Krypton*

Wow, so much explained. I can't believe Clark Kent is Superman. -_-

Really, the positives here come from stuff that isn't focused on, like a photo on Clark's desk that shows Ma and Pa Kent were alive long enough to see Jon as a baby, or that Perry Mason is Jon's godfather. I expect the main Superman title to do more with integrating Jon's past as continuity, but there are still so many unanswered questions that will probably be handwaved as "don't worry about it."

Dammit, I came in here to praise a Spider-man comic for the first time in decades and instead I felt the need to digress into this Super-silliness.

So a few weeks ago my brother reminds me of the comic Crossed (don't google unless you are ok with EXTREMELY NSFW images). And I follow that up by obsessively reading every single Crossed comic I could find. Which....put me in a weird place.

But I needed more. So then I read Blackgas. Need more. I read Neonomicon. Need more. So I burn through No Hero. Still not enough. Now I just finished reading through Uber.

And I still need more. More of the hopelessness and extreme violence/horror you find in these comics. I'm realizing that this kind of comic is fairly addictive and possibly not great for my brain.

But I need more.

Any suggestions?

I didn't realize the New 52 was such a departure even in the origin story. Still doesn't explain how other events mesh or get overwritten, but I guess we'll see in a couple weeks.

That's how I'm feeling. Like, if this was where things were going, what was the point of pre-Flashpoint Superman giving pre-Flashpoint Wally West a pep talk about dealing with this new universe if neither of them were going to remember it afterward?

It would've been less convoluted and more acceptable if they'd just kept Super family in hiding until DC was ready for Rebirth's end-game, then just do a Crisis/universe reset. At least then it's clear that EVERYTHING changed. Having it so only Superman and Superman-related stuff changed just makes everything a mess of what sticks and what doesn't. If Superman has his usual backstory, why the hell are they in Hamilton County?

Tomasi on Superman is still great and wholesome, and hell, he even makes this shit work in some ways, like Lois tearing up to see her own name on their mail. But even that makes no sense because Action Comics implies they don't remember Convergence, hiding out, etc.

I get these are pains DC is taking to get back to their better-known status quo, but there were cleaner ways. All this does is get in the way of what was until last month a solid Superman run.[DOUBLEPOST=1492114834,1492114285][/DOUBLEPOST]And as a side note, I liked the whole outsiders thing. Farm life seemed to suit Clark fine, and Lois was doing surprisingly well with it. This isn't a Marvel "unrecognizable Avengers" situation, but another stretch of the Superman story. This just feels like a waste.

I'm glad Batman is DC's big seller (as usual) because I'm hoping that'll protect Tom King's work from being fucked with. Hell, he's avoiding this summer's event by having a flashback story occur in Batman instead of tying in :D. Brilliant.

I feel Supergirl 8 did better addressing the effects of the aftermath than New Superman 10 did, and I really liked that game of Supercatch. Back to 10, I got this comic due to me thinking it'd be similar to Supergirl 8, but its pretty much the middle of a story all ready happening and I could not feel anymore lost. Supergirl was a lot easier to follow, primarily because I think the writer knew people who were focusing on the Jurgens/Tomasi Superman comics bought this thinking it'd be a proper continuation which it kinda is. New Superman shoves you SMACK dab in the middle of an ongoing story, with nary an explanation as to what the FUCK is going on. ALSO-I-Ching is back? I thought we as a culture were trying to FORGET everything about the time WonderWoman lost her powers and...fighting skills as well, for some reason, and needed a man to teach her to be superhero again.

Also while yes incredibly convoluted, still love Action Comics and Superman, and DAMMIT-I wanna see Superman going bowling with Lombard and Jimmy so bad. HOORAY FOR CIVILIAN FRIENDS OF SUPERHEROES-whom become kind of...a rarity as their continuity increases. Remember Booster Gold's secretary who became a superhero for like one issue? DISAPEARED!

Which apparently wasn't very good, but people are pushing to buy it just to show DC there's a demand for Booster Gold.

I'd love a new Beetle/Booster Gold comic but we're almost a year into Rebirth, so I don't see it coming. My wife would like a new The Question book as well.

Anyway, what I came in to mention last week was that I actually bought a Spider-man comic, specifically Spider-man: Renew Your Vows #6, because the only way for a Peter Parker story to be good anymore is for it to take place outside the main Marvel universe. Great characterization of Peter, MJ, and Annie, plus if you grew up with the X-Men cartoon, well, so apparently did this universe (minus a couple twists). Core to the issue is that Professor Xavier invites Annie to join the school, and everything else follows through from there. It's almost more an X-Men comic, except not crappy. And a Spider-man comic, except not crappy.

If only the main universe could be not crappy. Wonder how long this book will last before Marvel cans it.


On another side of Marvel, I wish Nick Spencer wasn't such a douche, because it's not like Tim Buckley who's an untalented douche. Spencer is a pretty damn talent douche ... that said, if I can watch a Roman Polanski movie, I don't have room to gripe if I read Captain America: Steve Rogers.

Probably? I'm not reading Marvel's main line-up right now of Spider-man, X-Men, any of that, so I can accept it as separate--in fact, I kind of prefer it this way. Really what'd annoy me is if it started crossing over with the main universe like with Spider-Gwen. At least this way it's safe from bullshit and we get some cool world-building.


I convinced my wife to give Hickman's Fantastic Four a shot. She's over there reading, sometimes giggling, other times muttering how annoyed she is with Reed Richards. Which are appropriate reactions.

I can't remember. Did you ever check out Mark Waid & Mike Wieringo's run? I think you mentioned it, but I can't remember.
