Whine like a baby, now with 500% more drama!

RIP my hard drive.

Not my main drive. It has been replaced for that many years ago. But it was still a good solid TB drive so I've been using it for storage. For something like ten years. Today it just crapped out right in the middle of me working on some things. I tried to save to it and all of a sudden started getting "specified a device that doesn't exist" errors. Tried to go to it through explorer, etc, restarted and it was gone. Caput. Can't be found.

I'm not even sure how much of all of what I lost. A ton of photos, some documents I'm sure I'll miss but can't think of right now, a large library of movies from back when people still used DVDs and I was ripping full image copies to build my library. ....And the porn, oh dear no... Not the porn!!! :(

Sorry that happened, man. After I experienced something similar I went the NAS route and never looked back. Synology makes some kick ass ones with all sorts of redundancies that protect your data.

I know this is a petty whine but it's what we're here for.

I really don't like Ragu sauce. It's too smooth and watery, like what you might get at a school cafeteria. It also has that too sweet Chef Boyardee aftertaste, like the onions had caramelized too long. The chunky versions have a marginally better texture but the taste remains. When I make pasta, I tend to buy Classico or the artisanal brands such as Rao's or Michael's of Brooklyn. A little on the expensive side, but delicious. I will even make my own sauce if I have the time.

The wife grew up eating the sauce her folks could buy from Walmart or Dollar General. Guess which sauce that is? If we have spaghetti when we visit her family, I'll eat it without complaining. I was raised to eat whatever is put in front of me if I'm a guest. At home, she still wants me to make spaghetti with Ragu. I do the cooking so I'm supposed to decide but telling her "then make it yourself" would be uncalled for and would definitely result in a fight. We've reached a compromise so we alternate sauces whenever I make pasta. We'll do my fancy sauce one time, and then that Ragu slurry the next time, and so on.

We have turned into the married couple that bickers over tomato sauce.

THis video is for you!

I'm hearing through the grapevine that SSDs are about to get super cheap... so I'm looking at one of these...

Bleh, work today super sucked. Busy all day and barely got anything done. Worked on two big issues and neither were resolved by the time to go home. One of them I should have been able to take care of easily, but my own Network Administrator has decided that us regular techs should not be allowed to download .exes anymore. So one of the two ID systems in the front office is currently down because I can't install the fucking software I need to, you know, TO DO MY JOB. Started work on that at 7:30 this morning and should have had it back up and operational by 8:30 at the latest, but no, I have to fight with my own Admins to be allowed to do work.:mad::mad:

The kitten is going through a growth spurt and has 2 moods, sleepy or manically hungry. This would be way less annoying if I could just leave food out for her to graze but our older cat is a menace and would just eat it himself.

I so wish we were able to keep food out for both cats. But the kitten/teen is a “I’m finished here, let’s test gravity” or “Imma flip the bowl when finished” and the Husky is a bottomless pit of a stomach that vacuums up any mess with food or “abandoned” food on floor level.

She's not that much smaller than the other one, and he's a more confident jumper than her so putting it higher doesn't work either. I have a chip feeder that I haven't tried to use yet, but he'll bully her out of the way so she still wouldn't be able to eat.

So, I submitted the application form to adopt. Dad is even going to help cover the costs. It's $300 per cat, BUT it also includes all of the following. Altogether, it probably would've cost more for all that bringing them to the vet, myself.

I heard back from the SPCA. And Ruff & Tuff's foster mom texted me. Sounds like I might be meeting the cats this weekend.

This is starting to feel less like a whine and more a minor victory, maybe. We'll leave it as a potential whine if I don't get them.

EDIT: I'm seeing them Friday night around 6:30. :D

Massive round of layoffs at my GF's work today.

Coincidentally, yesterday, the VP scheduled a meeting with my GF at 4. So I guess we'll be finding out if she's going to be let go, too.

On the one hand, it'd suck to be laid off. On the other, this job was already not shaping up to be what she hoped, and had started looking for another.

Well, she still has her job. But she really spilled the tea to the VP about how useless her boss is, so we'll see what repercussions happen from that.

My wife and I were planning a trip to visit family overseas in July or August, and then today my company received a huge translation case for July and August, in which the client specifically asked for me to do it.

On the one hand, it sucks to sacrifice family reunions for work.

On the other hand, I am quite aware that translation companies like mine are facing an existential threat from machine translation and AI, so if a client is coming to us with a big case, then whether I'm available to do it may very well affect my company's survival.

(And having to do a big and hard translation case can suck for its own reasons.)

GF's son looks to be switching off the night shift at work. It's putting quite the damper on... activities.
If he's old enough to work, he's old enough to be left alone. Have her stay at your place.

If he's old enough to work, he's old enough to accept the fact his mother is a woman and has a life, including relations. He needs to suck it up

1) They both live at my place full time, and his room and our room share a wall.

2) GF is REALLY loud, and counterintuitively, really self conscious.

The best gifts in life :p

(I'm aware that's not a solution, it's a joke)
Funny thing is, dude DOES wear headphones and I am 100% certain he would not actually hear us. Whenever I want him to hear me I literally have to go all the way into his room and tap him on the shoulder, because shouting his name works maybe 1 time in 15.

Of course, that could be just because he's 19.

But you can't argue away insecurity.

I postponed my usual workout so I could help the wife at her school. She needs to take down some classroom decorations and is too short to do it herself. That wasn’t a problem and I was done in minutes. But she still can’t leave the school because one of the kids is still here. Their parents forgot to pick them up and the kid doesn’t know how to get ahold of them.

It’s been a long week of meetings. I just want to go home.

The disrespect for teachers has grown to such a degree that I don't understand how any of you folk still do it. Alberta teachers are gearing up for a strike and already I hear people whining about how entitled they are and shit. My friend's wife bawled suddenly over dinner the other day over how her school was out of paper three weeks into the school year and that was the least of the school's money issues.

They do it because they actually WANT these kids to learn, to succeed, but the people above them too often abuse this drive, which means the teachers end up consuming themselves in the effort of maintaining the required quality.

They do it because the schools offer good health insurance, a decent salary, student loan forgiveness, and a good pension plan.

Or at least here that’s it.

I enjoy teaching. I don’t know why.

I like knowing that my job is making the world a better place. It’s certainly not the only job that can say that, but it’s the only job I’ve ever had where that’s true.

I like seeing the epiphany moment when students get it. I like when they use something I taught them, or when they grow in a noticeable way.

Also, I can’t complain as much. The school I teach at now is a well-supplied palace compared to some of the shit holes I first taught at.

I hear that. When I taught high school it was in an underfunded rural district. Our school used to be a fallout shelter. The school-supplied world map in my classroom was probably from the ‘70s because it still showed the USSR, Yugoslavia, and two Germanies. I left months after it was announced that the district would take a 40% budget cut.

That said, I enjoyed teaching most of the kids. I had the early college/dual-credit kids who were motivated to graduate and get out of town. They have moved on to bigger and better things and I’m delighted that I helped them do so.

I was one of two liberal teachers in the entire school. I let my students hang in the classroom during lunch and they brought friends with them. These were LGBT theater kids. They knew they could relax in my room because I wouldn’t judge them, invite them to Bible study, or try to “pray the gay away.”

I also taught some bums who only went to school for the free lunch. They were invariably athletes. Last I heard, most of that bunch stayed in town where they still parade around in their letterman jackets. They routinely brag about that time they went to state because that’s their only accomplishment. I never understood “peaked in high school” until I taught at one.

I’m noticing more students who aren’t turning in work because of family issues. These are assignments that they’ve known about since the beginning and they “forget” about it because “granny had an episode.” One even wanted an absence excused because she’d been arguing with her Mom. I used to be a student and there were some assignments I forgot about. But I knew it was my fault so I accepted the low grade and was more diligent in the future.

Either they are consummate liars or American family life has deteriorated to a ridiculous degree. At least they’re not making up stories of siblings being shot at parties anymore.
