Now I hope the UIL will ban the kids for life, and the Athletic Director fires at least the head coach.
The fact that it's 2 players shows some sort of conspiracy. Now the task is finding out who knew what when.

I don't think the coach was involved, because, overall, bad for the team at that place on the field. Also, play before this one had the ejection of another player, so revenge for the "bad call" ref.

True, but you still have to dig a little. At the very least, they came up with the plan in the huddle, so those teammates may have known it was coming.

Defenses usually don't huddle. They are usually spread out to be able to move to match the offensive formation, the two safeties could have conspired (obviously did to me) but the rest of the team didn't have to know a thing about it. The first link in the thread has a video that shows the play from a wide shot, and you can tell that the rest of the team was playing normal, reacting to the formation and moving to stop the running back.

So I'm confused. Every story I've seen says the other team was running out the clock, while SparHawk is saying the penalty set up the winning score. While I wouldn't put it beyond the realm of possibility, it would indeed be incredibly stupid if the kids did this while the other team was driving to win the game.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding now too. Reports I read on Saturday were all saying the game was tied when this happened... getting weirder...

Box score says game winning TD was scored with 5:35 left in the game. I suspect the incident happened after that.
EDIT: Reading the end of the article posted from MySA.com, it definitely appears that Marble Falls had the ball and was trying to get a first down so they could kneel down - which would indicate that it was well after the TD had scored.
This was garbage time, and those two kids from JJHS should be suspended and not allowed to play football for the rest of their HS careers.

At the very least they shouldn't be able to play sports in H.S., but I think they should be charged for assault. They could have killed that ref.
They take HS footbal WAY too seriously here in Texas. Cracked had an article about it recently.

If they were taking the game seriously they would not have tried to hurt the ref.

You and I have different interpretations of "serious" in this context.
People that take the game to0 seriously are people that get livid enough about a possible game loss that they are willing to try crippling a ref to get revenge for it. The win is everything, and losing is seen as something that not only embarrasses the players, but also the town they are from.
Yes, if they took the game professionally, then they should never have tried to hurt the ref, but from what I understand the damage was done, and the team already knew they were going to lose, so they took out the stress on the ref that made the call that, they feel, brought them the loss. Again, this assumes that is the case, since a lot of the info seems to be jumping between "They did it as revenge for a call" and "They did it because he was a racist jerk", so we will have to see in the end where the needle finally drops.
Needle drop. Here's an idea. You already know of two who did wrong. Slap them upside the head with a brick. If you found that someone else was in the wrong who maybe caused the others to do wrong: slap him upside the head with a brick. don't let one brick slapping stop the other.
My high school actually was part of an article in Sports Illustrated (this was my freshman year in 1994) after a ref tried to commit suicide since the people in the community went overboard going after the ref after the refs screwed the school's football team out of a win the playoffs (severely bad calls, refs were celebrating the fact that the other team scored what was the game-winning touchdown instead of doing the proper signal). Not saying that this was the case here, but people do tend to take things a bit too seriously.

The coach should be punished either way. That play happened just after two other players from that team were ejected.

That article doesn't say that. It says the kids say their coach did, though.
