I've been begging for a mac pro at work. So I got a new computer, but it wasn't a mac. Dammit. I don't even need the new one, I just wanted a mac. They got me a 30" screen and 96GB of RAM with 8 cores (I run heavy computational stuff, and I code a lot of it in MPI). I guess I shouldn't complain, but I didn't really need the horsepower. We have a 400 core cluster for that. On the other hand, I guess this could be a polite way of saying "stop using cluster resources for your experimental R&D stuff when there's paid work to be done".

It could also be a polite way of saying, "Your department doesn't use Macs, and that includes you. Get over it."

Nah. We're a 40 person company--there's no real departments so to speak. There are a good number of macs around here, but I think it's just a matter of status quo more than anything else.

We can be slackers together! Except, I'm not the boss....my boss is just laid back, so the percentage of me getting in trouble is quite slim. Besides, it's year end for us next week, so things are winding down. But, yes, adultolesence it is!

At work we measure our progress by how many 'pages' of the research we're working with we get through (we're entering historical records into a database). On average, a person does 200/day; about 1000/week if they're full time.

I do 3-400/day, and hit 1100 pages yesterday. So I could basically not do any work today and tomorrow, and still be ahead of the game. Not that I would actually do it, but I do take a secret level of joy in that knowledge.

I have things that I have to write off, out of our system daily (I finished that at 10:15) and then I have a project that needs to be done by the end of the month, which I'm working on now until I go home. And that's pretty much my everyday. Daily write off's and minor projects from my boss, then I work on the monthly one til I go home. Weeeeee...

It's always the same on these engineering projects... piping and process are slooooowww and the structural guys (me) get screwed by the schedule in the end. For now though... interwebs!

So my freshman students have been reading Romeo and Juliet. At the beginning, it was a constant stream of bitching about how the language didn't make sense, they couldn't understand what people were saying, etc. Standard stuff, really. So we've been working on how to parse Shakespearean English, and I was disappointed at how slow they took to it.

Today, when we finished the play, I asked if there were any questions. One student raised her hand and said, "Why did Shakespeare make the language so much easier to understand at the end? The beginning of play had weird language, but towards the end it got more normal. Why didn't he do that the whole time?"

"It's the same as it was before. You're just a lot more comfortable with it now."

Most of the class: "Oooooooh. I like this more now."
