Video Game News and Miscellany

Let us all join together in our prayers and hopes that this will not be either a F2P MMO with a hundred thousand microtransactions, or a mobile iPay game.

if this is actually a decent reboot/relance/whatever of SC2, I will join you all in your choruses of joy.

The Humble Origin Bundle started today. At first I thought "Hahahahahahahahahahaha! NOPE!" but then I realized that some of the games still come with Steam keys. So I picked up Mirror's Edge for a buck.

The games that come with Steam keys are:
Dead Space
Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
Crysis 2: Maximum Edition
Mirror's Edge
Medal of Honor

Dead Space 3 requires Origin, and all the games that you get for beating the average require Origin as well (Battlefield 3 and The Sims 3 + Starter Pack)

Crysis 2 is definitely worth checking out, especially for $1. It's a good shooter, if a linear series of arenas.

I think it definitely had that year's best menu music.

I got this for mirror's edge and burnout, but decided to give Dead Space 3 a try as well. Unfortunatly, Origin does not currently want to load the redeem a product page, it keeps timing out.

I shouldn't be surprised, because Origin.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. They weren't even remotely prepared for the launch of SimCity. Why would it be prepared for something like this?

Also, of the games listed, my notebook would be lucky to run Sims 3. But I already have that on Steam. I'll wait and see if they add more. If they boost the Sims 3 pack with more, like University, then I'll get it.

Yup, CDPR has seriously become the top end of cinematic sequences. Though this one isn't as good as Witcher 2's intro or the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer.

That's not quite as badass as the trailer for The Witcher 2...but that's because the trailer for Witcher 2 was too badass for mortal man to appreciate.

EDIT: Totally ninja'd. :p

Witcher 2's intro is straight up God tier CG intro, along with Blizzard's finest and the best Squeenix has ever had to offer.

Bunch of songs for Rock Band are being pulled forever soon.

  • Locksley - "She Does"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Snow (Hey Oh)"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Tell Me Baby"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic Album Pack
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Apache Rose Peacock"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Breaking the Girl"

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "They're Red Hot"
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under the Bridge"

Not really relevant or important. I just wanted to lament how much Activision and EA need to be beaten over the head for oversaturating/crushing this genre, which if it were handled a little more gingerly and with a modicum of respect for consumers, may still be around. Rock Band is fun. Some friends still pull it out during gatherings and we have a blast. Too bad we won't see any new content and what's there will begin to slowly disappear forever.

Man, it's almost time to make a Square Enix needs to fuck off and die thread.

Apparently a PS4 Legacy of Kain sequel titled Dead Sun was in the works, but was cancelled because it wasn't the right time for that game to be made, according to Square Enix official posting on Neogaf. Instead, a PC Multiplayer only game called Nosgoth is in the works. Fuck. You.

Here's some early assets from the game, followed by the original post by the Squeenix rep.

This is the Silent Cathedral from Soul Reaver, the game was set to take place centuries after the conclusion of that series.

I’ve been watching this post and I thought you might want a bit more information. I can confirm that Dead Sun was a project which had been in development - but which was cancelled.

I know it’s disappointing to hear about these things out of context, and whilst some of the details released are accurate - some details are not. You know game projects can be cancelled for a variety of different reasons and I know it’s very hard to tell from images and info alone, but in the end LoK: Dead Sun just wasn’t the right game, at the right time… but you’ll have to take me at my word on that, I’m afraid.

Obviously, it’s not usual for assets from cancelled games to be released, but given that there’s a lot out there already I thought you might appreciate seeing a few more images that were taken from the previously in-progress game.

As you’ll be aware, we’re currently working on a multiplayer game firmly set within the Legacy of Kain universe called Nosgoth, which we’re very proud of. It’s grown in size and scope since its initial conception and we’ll be talking more about it in the future. While we’re not working on a single-player Legacy of Kain game right now, that doesn’t mean it’s not something we’d look at making in the future.
Nosgoth will sell 176 million copies and probably still be declared a failure, since all Squeenix is capable of right now is losing money.

I'd post more, but there's something fucked up with the img tags and I can't post more than one picture per edit without it breaking the image somehow, so this is it.

Wait, they had one in the works and they canceled it?!

(I know there are lots of legit reasons to cancel game development...but come fucking on Squeenix!)

I love how they're trying to pretend the issue is Anders being bisexual. A lot of characters in DA2 are bisexual.

If a character could have died in a predecessor game, why not just have them not show up if you load a save from that game? That makes sense more than sudden retcons. Or perhaps Bioware should have been more ambiguous with characters' fates. But all in all, the events of DA2 don't really matter much. What choices you make affect that game very little, so I'm not surprised they don't affect the sequel at all. DA2 didn't really take into account your choices from DA: Origins except for a couple side quests and who shows up as monarch.

So really, nothing new.

According to Gaider's Twitter, if he's talking about that same post, it's like 2 years old. It might not even be relevant anymore. Everything I read in the last preview basically said your other characters' stories are over, as you are now the head of this Inquisition. They've said it's possible you could run into your old protagonists with save data imported and that a lot of characters (at this point they're not officially saying who save for Morrigan, Varic and Cassandra (the interrogator from II) could make cameos (though Varric and Cass are confirmed party members). Nobody outside of those three, according to the latest previews (Laidlaw and Gaider interview), are official. You're going to have a choice of race this time, among other things. Also, last I read Morrigan's kid, if you had one with her, will play a part in the new game.

BioWare's really dropped the ball the last few years, I agree. DAII was okay at its best and boring and dumb at worst. However, maybe jumping on a two-year old forum post slapped on someone's Tumblr isn't the best way to get the info.

I'm reading GameInformer's big spread on DA3: Inquisition right now. The more details they divulge, the more it sounds like the game fans of DA: Origins have been wanting. Your actions shape both your character and the character/values of the Inquisition itself. When you make choices, things happen, as opposed to hearing about it later and seeing no effect. Your race choice affects how NPCs react to you and can also affect the progress of the Inquisition since you're in charge (though I'm interested if you can delegate someone else to speak up in a situation). Because there's an investigation underway, it gives you a reason to travel across Thedas and do stuff, like with DA: Origins, which I felt had a great story set-up. And like the Grey Wardens in that game, you're set apart from all the bickering and bullshit--you choose alliances and alignment. They're also trying to take a page from Skyrim in allowing more exploratory areas with hidden routes to new areas and storylines.

I hope honestly that Bioware can make good on all this. Obviously right now they're taking more time with the game than they did with quick cash-in DA2, but that doesn't mean EA won't say "we got a deadline, hurry the fuck up".

Right now the races are only elf, human, and dwarf, but I'd love to play as a qunari for the NPC reactions.

Urgh, I can't believe I'm getting excited about this. I told myself I would not be suckered.

I'm getting Molyneux flashbacks.

I don't know. One of the developers said they don't want to have situations where the player makes a choice, then reloads and sees the only difference was a slightly altered reaction.

They get it. They know what the problems are. I'm just hoping they have the time to do all they want to make a good game. I think Fable is far more ambitious than its makers could handle, whereas Bioware really just needs to do what they used to do.

How much of Bioware is really left? The founders are gone and they had a revolving door of talent leaving in droves the last several years.

They can still ape the past :p. If I get another Dragon Age: Origins-style game with the combat improvements and a voice-acted protagonist, I'll be happy. I just don't want another DA2.

If "different race gets different NPC reactions", "you can move about the landscape" and "different choices make for very different end game" are what makes a great RPG, Daggerfall is still the perfect RPG. Well, it is, but not for that reason. Come on folks, these are things that, in cRPGs, are supposed to be standard. Getting excisted over that is BS.
Wake me up when there's real change and there're real decisions you can take. As in, more than NWN2, more than The Witcher 1 or 2. Otherwise, same old, same old, and I don't see any good reason to play a game in a series where there were serious issues with all previous installments, coming from the makers of Your Choices Matter: Now in Red, Blue, Green and Fuck You colors!".

So how about Gamestop selling a sudden massive restock of "used" copies of Xenoblade (discs and inserts and such are all universally immaculate and the discs have a stamp on them that's only on Wii-U games) for 100+ dollars a copy because they're rare and vintage?

Every Gamestop in the US got some copies. That's 5000+ suddenly acquired used copies.
