Time to get a little psyched about the upcoming 50th anniversary special. First, the trailer:
"Oh, you redecorated. I don't like it."
The other? A mini-episode to get you excited. And it's a hell of a way to get you excited because we get a VERY surprise guest star.
It makes me wonder now who else we'll see make a return for this special. I would've loved to see Eccelston one more time, but he was busy making Thor 2 at the time. I believe he also wants to distance himself from the role.

For those unfamiliar with the face, that's Paul McGann the 8th Doctor who only got to play the role once, for the Doctor Who movie in the mid-90s. The movie was shit, but many believe he was a great Doctor - or at least could have been great if given more than just the movie.

I'm extremely happy to see McGann getting a chance to play the role again, however brief. It sucks that he didn't have the chance to really run with it.

I liked Eccelston as The Doctor. His distain towards the role, however, leaves much to be desired.
Not particularly happy to see Rose again, though. I was never a big fan.
I was never a fan of Rose or Eccelston episodes. I don't necessarily want to blame the actors however. My biggest issue with the first 4 seasons (after 2005 reboot) was that Russell T Davies never saw the full potential for the show and had a completely different vision than Moffet. So many of his episodes lay on more cheese and stupidity than I could ever stand. It was like he was trying to recreate the campiness of the original series by using cheap effects and poor dialogue/writing. What he seems to have failed to realize was that the series was doing the best with what it had to try and create good quality TV. Compare his episodes with those written by Moffet and you'll see what I mean.

Still. That's the writing. Not the acting. Again very different on how Davies and Moffet see things. I still love how Amy Pond jumps the Doctor at the end of the episode, and he has absolutely no clue what that's all about for a while, and then freaks when he gets it.

It was... not good. I don't think that's Paul McGann's fault at all, though. It was slow, plodding, and ultimately stupid (the Master as a brain slug of some kind? What the?).
Most people hate the fact that he only got the one terrible chance to play the Doctor, which is why it's nice that they're giving him a chance to reprise the role.
The only good thing about that movie was Paul McGann. Which, as Bowie said, is why it was nice to see him reprise the role at least one more time. Apparently, a lot of the Doctor Who audio play work he did following the movie - which lasted for YEARS - is some good stuff.
This was back when the networks thought that American audiences just wouldn't get British shows and tried to do American reboots of them. Typically resulting in something gawd awful (Check for the American versions of Red Dwarf and Coupling if you don't believe me). Yeah they still do it for some shows such as The Office, but I think that Americans appreciate British television more across the board now.
Just be thankful FOX didn't get their wish and an American actor was hired to play the Doctor.
See, the thing about Coupling is that they didn't alter it in any way. The script for the pilot episode of Coupling was literally word for word exactly the same except for the obvious british terms like flat and such. It kind of goes to show how the cast itself makes a huge difference.
All you need to know about the Doctor, and then some.
