About a month ago in my Voice for Theater class, someone asked "Where is everyone?" The first two responses were "They're dead" and "I killed them" in rapid succession and completely unplanned. Some people were laughing, others were just staring in stunned silence.

Yesterday: SNOW IS EVERYWHERE! ROADS BLOCKED, DRIVEWAYS UNDRIVABLE, TOTAL CHAOS!!!

Today: SLuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuush.

AND YET- the kids in my neighborhood got a freakin' snowday. When I was a kid, it took the damn Eagles getting to the Super bowl to get a snow-day with such conditions!

We had -15 at school drop off hours last week, which usually prompts a day off because they don't want kids outside in that nonsense. But alas we had historic flooding that already closed schools for a straight week, so it will take the biggest blizzard of all time to get a snow day this year.

I think I can randomly pinpoint people who speak with an Essex accent....Like if I'm watching a film and someone is from the UK, I can tell if they're from Essex or not. And I'm not sure why Essex specifically, but that seems to be the case?

Ah cold days, I remember those. Mostly because me and my brother stood outside for an hour waiting for this bus ONLY TO BE INFORMED that school was cancelled. Our juice thermoses did not survive.

I went to Catholic school from K-8 and had to wear skirts everyday, in Buffalo, NY, in the winter. That was the most horrible thing ever when it came to waiting for the bus. And when you live in an area famous for lake effect snow, it takes an act of God to cancel school.

...you win! Gettin' cold just thinkin' about it.

From grade 8 to high school my district as a whole didn't receive many snow days, however some times we went to school on days when no-one should've been driving especially our retired theoretically senile bus driver. I am talking ICY roads, and sometimes it was still snowing! And because the busses had busted ventilation, it was basically snowing INSIDE! Didn't make our crappy bus any colder, but it did make reading hard to get wet.

In Michigan, snow is a normal thing, so while we occasionally get snow days (or times like 1981, when basically the entire state got covered in 2 inches of ice), it was 1982 that was the kicker. That year in March, school was canceled on a handful of days due to rain. So much rain that they couldn't run the buses. That's a lot of rain.

Red Red Wine is by Neil Diamond? What? I hated this song until ... 30 seconds ago. I don't mind Neil Diamond's version. And this is the original? Huh. The things I don't know are legion.[DOUBLEPOST=1386697858,1386697621][/DOUBLEPOST]Unrelated: I fucking loathe the song "Big Yellow Taxi"

Tumblr makes me feel old sometimes. A gif set came up of a scene from Kill Bill vol 1 because someone I follow was asking where it was from. I thought at first "that's silly, of course it's from Kill Bill". Then I realized that this person is probably 15 or 16, and so was 5 or 6 when it came out and has no idea. I was only aware of Pulp Fiction when I was a kid because one of our TV channels (of the 13 we had) would play it some weekends. Kids don't have that anymore--my cousins have 200 channels at their house, but the parental restrictions keep them on a group of kid-friendly ones. They're not going to discover anything older than themselves except through me and my wife.

come to Minnesota where the magic number is -40°F/°C, why? Thats the temperature where you get frostbit on exposed skin in 5 minutes and cars wont start without being plugged in...

I remember my Godmother talking about something similar when she taught in Alaska. That and how she had to do moose patrol in the mornings before school.

I remember being late to school a few times in Alaska because a moose would walk into the middle of the road right in front of our bus and refuse to move.

If I remember correctly, this was to keep the kids who walked to school safe from the moose particularly during rutting season.
May I just say that gave me a rather unusual mental image, though posting what it was would definitely land me on every watch list in the world.

So, I recently learned about being "Scene." I looked at it and assumed it was the new emo. Apparently its been around awhile and was popular when I was in middle/high school.

How did a trend like this completely pass me by?

Yeah that snuck up on me too, like it just appeared one day plucked from the ether through evil fashion magic.

The fella came home with a great story yesterday. He got to kick a belligerent customer out of the restaurant. It sounded glorious.

This annoying, entitled old bat was mad because she'd ordered the wrong thing (thought she'd ordered what she wanted but said the wrong thing, so the waitress just brought it back and put in the new order). Then she realizes that the gift card she got for spending 50$ on gift cards isn't activated until Jan 1, 2014, and that pisses her off. Jake was the only manager there, so he gets to handle it.

After apologizing for the food error (even though it wasn't theirs) and re-explaining the gift card thing, he says that he literally does not have the power to activate the card. He shows her that it says so on the card and apologizes again. She starts ranting loudly. He lets her. Then she says, "Well, this little whore who served me..."

Jake: "Excuse me? What did you call your waitress?"

Lady: A. Little. Whore. (She's a 16-year old. It's her first job. She's upset in the kitchen after being yelled at.)

Jake: I don't have to listen to your complaints if you're going to abuse my staff. Lunch is on me, but I want you out now. You're no longer welcome here.

WOOOOOO! And after he explained everything to the head manager he got a pat on the back. :D[DOUBLEPOST=1386884516,1386884290][/DOUBLEPOST]I am proud of my fella. He's the best.

'Kay, what's up with all the spammers around here?
We wanted new members, didn't we? And now that we have some, with some interesting and worthwhile posts about new and improved ways to lose fat and free movies, you're unhappy?

There's no pleasing some.

Having been managed by bad and good people at various levels in a few different jobs, and moving on to be a (hopefully?) good manger, I'm really glad Jake did that. I have been hung out to dry by many a boss, and regardless of quality -that is, sometimes, yes, my employee has sucked- I will go to the wall for him or her if they aren't being treated with respect. I have no problem admitting they screwed up, but I do not let people make it an excuse to abuse someone.

Seriously, those crankypants. They're never happy unless they're miserable.
